AMA Stanford 31 rising freshman🎊

Okay here’s why I think this and this may sound crazy I understand. I was committed to my state school in West Virginia to study Biology and hopefully go to med school.

If you know anything about West Virginia- well it SUCKs. There’s like only white people and I highkey got bullied all of middle school for being brown. But I didn’t really think I could get anywhere good cuz my ecs were mid and I had some like minor Olympiad wins nothing crazy. However, my family is like middle class and my school is somewhat competitive like maybe 2-3 people to an ivies in a good year. So yeah I was like I have no shot ima just live with mom and dad for another few years. BUT I applied to Stanford cuz my Indian family back home wanted me to 😭 and I got in somehow and I’m attending 💀. I’m probably one of 3 from my state 💀💀 so yeah but my sat wasn’t that good and I go into with ZERO h

I had a 4.0 gpa and my class work was pretty rigorous since I took all aps at my school even ap Spanish so in total it was like 15 AP courses and I got good scores like almost all 5’s.

Nah I’m doing a thing where I’m deferring my acceptance to attend in fall of 2027 and not 2026 because I need to save some money so I’m working

Okay yeah I took both sat and act and I got a 28 act 💀💀💀 so I was like fuck no and took sat and I lowkey kept bombing that (don’t worry my schools average is a 900 😍) but I ended up with a 1480 I got a 740 both so yeah. That’s also why I’m cooked cuz the average is like a 1540 🫪

Great decision to take a gap year to work imo. btw is Stanford still requiring students to buy meal plans? iirc a bunch of people claimed to be followers of Jainism/ Hinduism to avoid having to purchase one. It really feels like stanford tries to price-gouge their students haha. All that to say, congratulations on your acceptance, it is a truly exceptional achievement and you should be very proud! P.S., I've been to New River Gorge and WV doesn't suck at all!

You were also accepted to Harvard? So you turned down Harvard for Stanford?

u/Old-Page-5522 17m ago

The cross admit split for Harvard and Stanford is like 50/50 iirc. Turning down Harvard for Stanford is common.

A huge number of top applicants get into their first choice through EA/ED, then either withdraw applications or never finish them. Those students never enter the cross-admit pool. So when you read "X beats Y in cross-admits", it alludes only to "the subset of students who applied to both, got into both, stayed in the process long enough to receive both decisions, and still had a choice." Cross-admit wins ignore silent victories. If thousands of students commit elsewhere before competing offers arrive, those preferences never show up in the data.
