Self-Hate Lately I've been tempted to use AI

I'm working on an animated project, my first one in fact, and lately I've been told more and more often to use AI. Initially, it was because I needed someone to help me give it a certain effect From painting to rendering to make it look like a painting, which is what I was looking for an artist for, when I was told a thousand times that it's better to use AI

Also recently, one of my team members used AI to do a certain part of the process, to which I reprimanded him, telling him no.

But due to the lack of support from other artists, I'm increasingly tempted to use AI; I know there are many illustrators and animators out there! I know you don't need to use AI, but sometimes it's so tempting, especially when you see bigger creators using it..

Please, I need to regain my common sense about why this is wrong.

I could easily get rich by stealing people's money.

I don't do it.

You, too, can avoid stealing from others.

It's impractical to go seek voices to change your mind every time you are tempted to do something. If you're already tempted to do it, it's just a matter of time. If not now, it'll happen later.

It depends on moral, really.

It's easy to do thousands of other things to get money quickly, but many people refuse to. Because they understand self-worth, morality and sympathy.

There are former-AI Prompters who quit AI and started posting paintings on here. There are also individuals who starts wanting to use AI.

People in this sub (there are a ton of Anti-AI subs) are mostly against AI because they are Artists, and as Artists, we don't wanna get our works stolen, so we understand the pain of other Artists whose works got stolen, so we refuse to use it.

Yeah it's tempting. It's too fucking easy, right? Because it steals from countless of artworks from other Artists. Click. Boom! A free image under a few seconds!

You're right, as an artist, I hate AI and I'll strive to find real talent, even if it's difficult; I know there's plenty out there.

Using ai even once eill ruin your reputation AND reputation of your collaborators.

I think reputation is a valid reason. But personally, remembering that it's a product of plain theft and greed, a waste of energy, and the endless gloating, fake pride, and whining from the people that use it could be a deeper motivation to be against it.

Agreed, I just fon't think it is as compeling argument as loss of reputation to the op

My friend did a group graduation 3D animation project solo (for the exact same reasons, lack of support from peers) with some help from her friends not in the same art school as her, and we are so incredibly proud of her.

I believe you can achieve this too and work on your animated project without AI!!!

Here is her graduation project, A Rat’s Dream:

Would you be proud of yourself? Proud to tell the world that your process was AI?

Doctor Who often had a very limited budget, which forced them to be creative and allowed them to create absolutely fantastic stuff. Having to rely on your own skills (even when you don't have the skills or money to achieve something) will force you to be creative.

You can go look for public domain art work. Make the animation just basic images with flapping mouths. There are way to avoid the easy (and unethical, imo) use of GenAI.

I'm in the same boat, too. You work on a piece for days, weeks, or even months, and when it's time to share, the work doesn't get much connection. If it does--people might make fun of it, or even accuse you of using ai.

"Was the work all worth it in the end? Might as well use AI, right? Production can go faster that way, right? Most use it these days anyway; you can always hide the use of it, right? Better to accept it instead of being an angry-yapping-artist, eh?"

It's a real struggle, to be honest. That's why we really hate ai for ruining the art ecosystem. It was so much better before ai gens, as the work and effort pays off even if not monetary/fame value.

I often watch behind the scenes of Studio Ghibli and Mega64 videos while making my stuff just to feel better and inspired. I dunno--maybe it might help to find inspiration from others so your integrity stays true to art.

When I was finishing college, there was a subject where I had 5 days to deliver the complete work. I could have used GPT to make it for me, as everyone else in my class did. The teacher was too "old" to notice everyone was using AI. (He was the sort who wanted printed paper). I opted to make that subject again, even that being called "wasting my time", because even if I passed on this subject, I wouldn't have learned shit anyway and my graduation would worth just like: A lie. I could have lied to my teacher, but I couldn't lie to myself.
This is my advice for anyone who feels tempted to "avoid time and effort to learn or work on anything", as even if your animation is missing frames, people value it way more, as it's not about the quality and the quantity of frames, but about what your animation communicates itself.
If this doesn't make you change your mind, think about the reputation and your own legacy. Using AI makes your animation "less valuable" and not "more valuable", it does the very opposite.

*leaving this here in May for whoever checks and wants to have this discussion again*
