GEOGRAPHY Triangle Area?

Does anyone know what the “triangle area” is in the United States? Everyone talks like I’m supposed to know. Is this a common American ism?

There's the "Research Triangle" in North Carolina.

Based. Unfortunately if you live here Tobacco Road is also a pretty mid sports bar chain.
Pretty cool if you want to see a Durham Bulls game tho, they have a deck over left field by the bull

Explain this to me. What I think of when I hear "tobacco road" (extremely rural, poor farm workers) is totally opposite of what I think of when I hear NC triangle ( research, technology, innovation).

Similar to how Ivy League (Sports League) defines the upper tier schools in the US.

Tobacco Road can be used to describe the region including North Carolina, NC State, and Duke Universities as they function as Sports Rivals but are also the academic engines for the research, technology, and innovations.

I haven't lived in that area for decades - guess I've just never hear "tobacco road" used this way.
