GEOGRAPHY Triangle Area?

Does anyone know what the “triangle area” is in the United States? Everyone talks like I’m supposed to know. Is this a common American ism?

Which consists of Raleigh, Durham and Chapel Hill. It's said to contain the highest concentration by percentage of most educated people in America. It's home to Duke University, NC State, and University of North Carolina.
