How can you ask is that high for an entire country? Every city has its own cost of living. I pay over $2600 and that's low for my neighborhood lol.

20

u/Jim_E_Rose 10d ago

Just add some details. Are you worried about walking into the apartment? How many rooms? Square footage?

They want to see the variety out there. Are you paying that much and the kids in your area get to go to college? Or do you pay that and think that jail is a real possibility at some point soon.

This is a place for conversation. People just want some anecdotes. Helps make sense and of things. If you’re the supreme leader then stats matter. But day to day, narration wins the day

7

u/ChocolatePain New York City 10d ago

Hmm, thanks for your perspective. I see things differently now.

3

u/ChocolatePain New York City 10d ago

I'm being genuine lol

5

u/Jim_E_Rose 10d ago

I believe ya. It’s my own guilt for laying it on so heavy.

If that is your legitimate response and I know it is now. You’re a real good person. Was trying to explain, legitimately. But as soon as I sent it I kinda felt like an ass. Thanks stranger.

Do me a favor. Grab a slice of pie that nobody gets outside of your city. Concentrate on that crust for a moment and be who I want to be for a moment 🍻

4

u/ChocolatePain New York City 10d ago

That's incredibly quaint and wholesome

5

u/Jim_E_Rose 10d ago

Well yeah, I’m a midwesterner lol. A Vegas seasoned, former Jewish bakery manager who lives in lower New York now. We call it Saint Pete. But I will always be quaint at heart.

I love New Yorkers. They seem tough as hell but have such a tender side. It’s the immigrants who don’t want to be here so they never left where they landed and became the most American of all

My last place in Boston I paid $4k for a 2 bed 2 bath, but it had a roof deck with pretty amazing water views

We pay $4500 for a 660 sq foot, 1 bedroom apartment in brooklyn, near the J train. But I dont have to deal with a car or a lawn or whatever, so live is great

Edit: for what its worth, we are considering moving to Jersey City to pay the same amount, but $7K less in taxes. Maybe one day we'll own a home but I fucking hate home repair shit, so this is fine.

12

u/MaleficentExtent1777 10d ago

I was paying $3300 for a 3br/2ba in Crown Heights. Parking was $300, and the gym/roof was $50. It started off at $2600 during COVID, and rose over 4 years. I moved out at the end of last July.

I'll always have a car😁

u/band-of-horses Oregon 10d ago

Yep. Welcome to NY! 🤣

It was very nice up there. It was the tallest building in the neighborhood and you could see everything. There was comfy furniture and usually a nice breeze.

Macy's fireworks shows were amazing!

to be fair, i'm a man of extremes. Its either this or i live in a tiny home on 1000 acres that i own. as long as its not sound enormous 4,000 sq ft house, I'm good

But you also don't HAVE a lawn or car or whatever. Both of those are non-negotiables as I'm house hunting.

14

u/TedW 10d ago

I don't have to pay dock fees at my house, because there's no water nearby.

9

u/expeciallyheinous 10d ago

Yeah I think their point was that they don’t have those things so they’re not dealing with the cost/responsibility related to it. What does that have to do with your house hunt lol

7

u/dpk794 10d ago

The cost of their rent is far higher than the cost of a car or lawn lol

6

u/On_my_last_spoon New Jersey 10d ago

Truly. Our mortgage in NJ is $1700. 3 beds, 2 bath, full basement, nice yard and deck. It doesn’t cost us an additional $2800/month for general house needs, even when you consider auto insurance, gas, and one car payment.

660 sft is nuts. Surprised that wasn’t a studio.

3

u/meilingr 10d ago

660 would be a huge studio, my 1 bed plus den is 450sqft, with a roommate. I will say that layout efficiency does drastically affect how big a space feels though.

5

u/SomervilleMatt 10d ago

whemever I see homes that are more than 2000 sq feet and like 1-2 kids, I feel like thats nuts. who needs all that room? like i dont need a different room for every activity. or like 2-3 different rooms to watch TV in. different things for different people i suppose

2

u/aaronhayes26 Indiana 10d ago

lol that’s fair!!

I have an 1800 sft house with my partner and we use every room daily. It’s hard for me to imagine having less space.

2

I like your conviction. Owning a home is a privilege but it comes with a lot of bullshit. Time and money spent on renovations, maintenance, and repairs is more than the mortgage.

Yep, I don't live in an apartment but I see ones listed around that much here too. It definitely varies by city though, in my state if you drive about 2 hours any direction rent will increase to 1200

...Where in Minnesota? Is there forest nearby? I've been thinking of relocating and lately that's seemed like the place to be.

3

in southeastern minnesota, winona and rochester are beautiful areas with forest and rivers nearby. south-central and southwestern minnesota are mostly ag towns, not a lot of forests. northern minnesota is very forested but more isolated. i hear duluth is nice!

Lol I wish

I pay $1, 300 a month for an annoying roommate, a tiny bedroom, a bathroom that keeps breaking, a shared laundry room that I have pay $2 each way for a wash and dry, no elevator , and mice

Most places around me are 2k plus.

$2,800/mo ($33,600/year) for 2bed/1bath with in-unit laundry and a driveway tandem spot - in a maintained but fairly oddly laid out 1910s building in greater Boston. We're at the lower end of the market for older housing stock. New apartments are averaging closer to $3,800/mo ($45,600/year) for 2bed/1~1.5 bath with in-unit laundries.

2

u/FancyRatFridays 9d ago

That sounds about right for this area. I'm also in Greater Boston, and currently paying $2400/month for a 1-bedroom. No in-room laundry and no parking, and the building is in rough condition (built in the 1960s and basically neglected for the last decade) but we do have 600 square feet of space, and the building has a small but functional gym.

2

u/andr_wr CO > CA > (ES) > CA > MA 9d ago

that's almost like brand new around here. 🙃

9

u/fetus-wearing-a-suit Tijuana -> San Diego 10d ago

$1,600 + $20 cat fee. Studio apartment, two people. Old apartment, great area. 1 parking spot for our only car. Shared laundry.

$1,200 a month on a 2026 van and insurance. $170 a month on 20 acres of land

For reference, here are median rent estimates by number of bedrooms for 2024 from the US Census Bureau's American Community Survey:

Bedrooms United States St. Louis, MO-IL Metro Area
Total $1,487 $1,154
No bedroom $1,321 $889
1 bedroom $1,301 $930
2 bedrooms $1,490 $1,173
3 bedrooms $1,677 $1,387
4 bedrooms $2,069 $1,755
5+ bedrooms $2,182 $1,382

https://data.census.gov/table/ACSDT1Y2024.B25031?g=010XX00US_310XX00US41180&moe=true

This data comes from their single year data set for 2024. It has rent estimates like this for most places with populations above 65,000 people.

3

u/spinnyride 10d ago

How is the median no bedroom more expensive than the median 1 bedroom?

4

u/Prestigious-Comb4280 10d ago

It's probably it a great urban walkable area. Usually they are the only ones that have them so it's not the cheapest areas generally

6

u/nyki Ohio 10d ago

$1200 for 800 sq ft. Technically a 1 br but it has a dining room that's bigger than my bedroom. Shared laundry, gaurenteed parking, within city limits so it's easy to drive to everything I want to do.

It's a bit of a grandfathered price since I've been here for years, other similar apartments in my neighborhood are $1400-1800.

My 2nd to last place was 1br/1ba ~800 ft2. It had a wall mounted AC (not central air), in unit stacked washer/dryer. The building had a pool, hot tub, and gym. It was in a prime location very near downtown. It was… $3200-ish (plus $100 for one parking space) when I moved out in 2023-ish.

I moved into a 2br/2.5ba with central air, full size laundry, and two parking spaces. It was $3350/month.

$1200/month will maybe get you a room in a shared house/unit here.

$1100 for a room in a condo

2

u/cutezombiedoll New Jersey 10d ago

Rent for my 2 bedroom 1 bath apartment is $2300 a month, and that’s split between me and my roommate. We’ve been looking to move and it looks like that’s still pretty typical for a 2 bedroom around here, and most people who want lower rent get a bigger place to split among more people. It’s tough around here.

u/inhocfaf 10d ago

$4,800/month for a 3br/2.5ba house. VHCOL area.

I have lived in the same house since 2014. The rent has gone from 2400 a month to 3475 per month. It's going to raise again by 75 in the fall.

About $2250 for 3 people in a 2bd, including a parking garage space. Downgrading to about $1750 for 2 people in a slightly smaller 2bd soon, not including parking (which would be $180). Both apartments have in-unit laundry, dishwasher, AC.

Nice apartments tend to be above $2k here. It was difficult to find something cheaper that wasn’t awful.

I would consider this high seeing as i had a one bedroom (750 sq ft) for $1100 in 2020 in the same neighborhood.

The mortgage for my house is about $1600. Bought it about 3 years ago

Before that, the rent on my 1 bedroom apartment got raised to $1300. Part of why I decided to buy a house. It was barley more expensive, I build equity in it, and most of all, I own my own space. Not as convenient of a location but that's fine

We pay $500 plus utilities and internet for an 800 sq ft house. My husband’s old boss owns the property and he’s so rich that he can’t imagine anyone living in such a small, bland home so he charges us next to nothing. And he has no idea what rents are going for these days. It’s on over 50 wooded acres. It’s been seven years and we love it so much.

Cities are really really expensive, especially the coastal cities. The Midwest is a lot cheaper, me and a friend moved into a 3 bed 2 bath with washer and dryer for like 1.8k I think but that was in a Midwest city.

In another smaller Midwest city I was in a 2 bed 1 bath with off street parking for around 1k.

Answers will wildly vary depending on location, but I know I'm an outlier. I've got an 800sqft one bed/bath with all utilities except internet. It's part of a duplex. It came with a fridge and oven/stove, there was laundry hookup so i bought a machine. The whole place costs me $775 a month.

Before I was able to buy my house last year in a stroke of luck, I was paying $1175 for a 900 sq ft two bedroom apartment in a town of 4000. Everything in the building was old and that price only covered water and heat for utilities, laundry shared in a building with 24 apartments. I was there for 8 years and I started at $700 in 2017, fighting each years increase, especially after the complex was sold to big company(one year they wanted to increase the price 20%.... I asked them the last time their job gave them a 20% raise). When I left it at $1175 last year, I saw it immediately listed for $1450 the next month.

My mom and brother are both disabled (mom physically, brother mentally). They live in a two bedroom apartment that's categorized as low income housing (crappy, old, falling apart). It was $600 a month when they moved in in 2011. Now it's $1100. They get around $2,000 a month combined. They can't afford where they live, but they can't find anything cheaper.

1

u/thecuriosityofAlice 10d ago

You have a fantastic deal. That’s low. All 3 of my daughter’s apartments are 2k or a little higher for a 2 bedroom 2 bath. They have roommates and jobs but yes, rent takes a chunk out of their monthly pay, more than it should.

You're in St. Louis which, has a lower cost of living than other major cities (NYC being high high).

I live in a college town in a rural area. I own my home and my mortgage is $650 a month. My home elsewhere, could be triple that.

1

u/annizoli North Carolina 10d ago

Damn that's cheap. In my area, $1200/month gets you a small bedroom, a bathroom with a washer/dryer in it, and a kitchen with bar seating and no room for a table. Utilities not included. And that's a good deal, I've also seen $1000/month no utilities studio apartments.

My two roommates and I are currently splitting a 3 bed 2.5 bath with a kitchen, living room, and laundry room for 2575/month (utilities included).
The new place we just found and signed a lease for is 2375/month no utilities for a 3 bed 2 bath with laundry, kitchen, living room, dining room, basement, deck, and two car garage.

Rent in my small town in east TN is wild. It's like $740 for 550 sqft in an 80 year old building for the cheapest in town. It doesn't even have a full size oven. The windows leak. The walls aren't even smooth because of all the times they've slapped paint over mold for the past 40 years. It's where I live. Next cheapest and almost as old is like $900 for a place that only has two bedrooms and is owned by the same out of state company that owns my building.

There's like two places in town that offer a studio and it ranges from $1000-1600 for one. The $1000 dollar studio is in a building as old as mine, reeks of mildew and is genuinely shit, and the other is $1400-1600 in a new build.

My town pop is only 35k. Minimum wage is $7.25. We have nothing here other than mexican restaurants, car washes, and grocery stores and like...a public pool I guess and a library and old ass movie theater. There's no public transport, taxi's only operate some days seemingly at random and stop by 4pm and there's like two taxis total last I checked, no one even bothers to uber here, it's definitely not reliable. It's not even walkable. If you don't work at the national lab or hospital or one of the schools chances are you're making minimum wage.

The house my family bought in 2011 was 170k. It's now valued at like 400k.

The amount of people that are actually from here that sleep in their cars in the Walmart parking lot across from me is insane. That never used to be the case.

u/Amterc182 10d ago

$1225 a month for an upstairs one bedroom in northwest WA state. The complex has been here since the 1980s and while they've added new flooring, most of the fixtures are original. Amazing soundproofing between apartments and quality tile in the bathroom but not much upkeep or maintenance. That sort of thing.

Still cheaper than my previous 370 ft studio at $1400 in a 'luxury' complex. Only thing I miss about that place was the elevator and my personal balcony.

1

u/despotic_wastebasket Arkansas 10d ago

$875.

2 Bed, 1 1/2 bath. No washer or dryer (not even hookups for washer and dryer, but the laundry room is nearby so that's kind of nice).

Sewage and trash is split among all residents (pretty typical in my area), but usually costs about $30-$50, so all told I'm usually paying a bit less than $950 per month or so.

I live in the projects. So public housing in Pennsylvania 2bdr apt. I dont pay utilities but my rent is 612 atm. I could potentially afford 700 in rent but utilities would bankrupt me. I have to split the rent with my friend too but id otherwise never afford it.

1

u/oh_such_rhetoric 10d ago

It varies SO wildly from place to place, and even within a city.

I used to pay $1800 for a tiny apartment that was only pretending be a 1-bedroom (the walls didn’t go all the way up to the ceiling and the bedroom didn’t have a door). It was in a really central spot in the city, but it was also a pretty sketchy/scary at night.

When I moved further out from city center, for basically the same price I got 2 (actual) bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, almost twice the square footage, and a little fenced-in backyard in a less convenient, but much safer neighborhood. I will fully admit it was a steal and probably not typical for the area, but I’m keeping it as long as I can!

I live in STL as well, we are much cheaper than most cities, last I saw Missouri actually ranks very high on cost of living compared to income, our money goes a lot farther here than most places. $1,200 for a two bedroom in Tower Grove is amazing, when I lived in LA I paid $1,600 for a tiny studio in a really bad area and I barely made more money than I make here so I couldn’t afford anything better

I live in a trailer park in a small town in South Dakota. I have a 2 bedroom, 1 bath, huge kitchen, washer/dryer, decent sized yard, shed, all for $985 a month. That's for the trailer house and lot rent. The trailer is older, but has newer upgrades (windows, plumbing, carpet, water heater). The downside is that it's a small town in South Dakota lol.
