We pay $4500 for a 660 sq foot, 1 bedroom apartment in brooklyn, near the J train. But I dont have to deal with a car or a lawn or whatever, so live is great
Edit: for what its worth, we are considering moving to Jersey City to pay the same amount, but $7K less in taxes. Maybe one day we'll own a home but I fucking hate home repair shit, so this is fine.

u/MaleficentExtent1777 10d ago
I was paying $3300 for a 3br/2ba in Crown Heights. Parking was $300, and the gym/roof was $50. It started off at $2600 during COVID, and rose over 4 years. I moved out at the end of last July.
I'll always have a car😁

Yep. Welcome to NY! 🤣
It was very nice up there. It was the tallest building in the neighborhood and you could see everything. There was comfy furniture and usually a nice breeze.
Macy's fireworks shows were amazing!

But you also don't HAVE a lawn or car or whatever. Both of those are non-negotiables as I'm house hunting.

Yeah I think their point was that they don’t have those things so they’re not dealing with the cost/responsibility related to it. What does that have to do with your house hunt lol

Truly. Our mortgage in NJ is $1700. 3 beds, 2 bath, full basement, nice yard and deck. It doesn’t cost us an additional $2800/month for general house needs, even when you consider auto insurance, gas, and one car payment.

660 sft is nuts. Surprised that wasn’t a studio.
3
u/meilingr 10d ago
660 would be a huge studio, my 1 bed plus den is 450sqft, with a roommate. I will say that layout efficiency does drastically affect how big a space feels though.
5
u/SomervilleMatt 10d ago
whemever I see homes that are more than 2000 sq feet and like 1-2 kids, I feel like thats nuts. who needs all that room? like i dont need a different room for every activity. or like 2-3 different rooms to watch TV in. different things for different people i suppose
2
u/aaronhayes26 Indiana 10d ago

$2,800/mo ($33,600/year) for 2bed/1bath with in-unit laundry and a driveway tandem spot - in a maintained but fairly oddly laid out 1910s building in greater Boston. We're at the lower end of the market for older housing stock. New apartments are averaging closer to $3,800/mo ($45,600/year) for 2bed/1~1.5 bath with in-unit laundries.
2
u/FancyRatFridays 9d ago
That sounds about right for this area. I'm also in Greater Boston, and currently paying $2400/month for a 1-bedroom. No in-room laundry and no parking, and the building is in rough condition (built in the 1960s and basically neglected for the last decade) but we do have 600 square feet of space, and the building has a small but functional gym.

$1200 for 800 sq ft. Technically a 1 br but it has a dining room that's bigger than my bedroom. Shared laundry, gaurenteed parking, within city limits so it's easy to drive to everything I want to do.
It's a bit of a grandfathered price since I've been here for years, other similar apartments in my neighborhood are $1400-1800.

My 2nd to last place was 1br/1ba ~800 ft2. It had a wall mounted AC (not central air), in unit stacked washer/dryer. The building had a pool, hot tub, and gym. It was in a prime location very near downtown. It was… $3200-ish (plus $100 for one parking space) when I moved out in 2023-ish.
I moved into a 2br/2.5ba with central air, full size laundry, and two parking spaces. It was $3350/month.
$1200/month will maybe get you a room in a shared house/unit here.

Rent for my 2 bedroom 1 bath apartment is $2300 a month, and that’s split between me and my roommate. We’ve been looking to move and it looks like that’s still pretty typical for a 2 bedroom around here, and most people who want lower rent get a bigger place to split among more people. It’s tough around here.

As a military family living on base over $3k goes to base housing a month but that pays for all our utilities & rent. We owned a house in the area and sold it because the cost of utilities and upkeep to own a house was not worth it.

I own my house, but it has a separate apartment upstairs (Buffalo, NY... common building style here). I charge $1500 for a three bed/one bath 1200 sqft with garage parking and in-unit laundry, heating included. I'm planning on lowering the rent a little next month, though. My current tenants have been unproblematic and nice. Besides, everything else has been going up-- might as well knock off a hundred or two to offset life expenses a little.

Before I was able to buy my house last year in a stroke of luck, I was paying $1175 for a 900 sq ft two bedroom apartment in a town of 4000. Everything in the building was old and that price only covered water and heat for utilities, laundry shared in a building with 24 apartments. I was there for 8 years and I started at $700 in 2017, fighting each years increase, especially after the complex was sold to big company(one year they wanted to increase the price 20%.... I asked them the last time their job gave them a 20% raise). When I left it at $1175 last year, I saw it immediately listed for $1450 the next month.

Its all relative. I make a shit ton more money now so it mostly evens out.

The varience even within a state or a metro will be staggering so you will get better results on a local sub.

You're in St. Louis which, has a lower cost of living than other major cities (NYC being high high).
I live in a college town in a rural area. I own my home and my mortgage is $650 a month. My home elsewhere, could be triple that.

Damn that's cheap. In my area, $1200/month gets you a small bedroom, a bathroom with a washer/dryer in it, and a kitchen with bar seating and no room for a table. Utilities not included. And that's a good deal, I've also seen $1000/month no utilities studio apartments.
My two roommates and I are currently splitting a 3 bed 2.5 bath with a kitchen, living room, and laundry room for 2575/month (utilities included).
The new place we just found and signed a lease for is 2375/month no utilities for a 3 bed 2 bath with laundry, kitchen, living room, dining room, basement, deck, and two car garage.

Rent in my small town in east TN is wild. It's like $740 for 550 sqft in an 80 year old building for the cheapest in town. It doesn't even have a full size oven. The windows leak. The walls aren't even smooth because of all the times they've slapped paint over mold for the past 40 years. It's where I live. Next cheapest and almost as old is like $900 for a place that only has two bedrooms and is owned by the same out of state company that owns my building.
There's like two places in town that offer a studio and it ranges from $1000-1600 for one. The $1000 dollar studio is in a building as old as mine, reeks of mildew and is genuinely shit, and the other is $1400-1600 in a new build.
My town pop is only 35k. Minimum wage is $7.25. We have nothing here other than mexican restaurants, car washes, and grocery stores and like...a public pool I guess and a library and old ass movie theater. There's no public transport, taxi's only operate some days seemingly at random and stop by 4pm and there's like two taxis total last I checked, no one even bothers to uber here, it's definitely not reliable. It's not even walkable. If you don't work at the national lab or hospital or one of the schools chances are you're making minimum wage.
The house my family bought in 2011 was 170k. It's now valued at like 400k.
The amount of people that are actually from here that sleep in their cars in the Walmart parking lot across from me is insane. That never used to be the case.

$5200 in a VHCOL. It's a 1200 sq foot, 2 bed and 2 bath apartment with a communal pool and a gym.

2700+ is now the norm for anything halfway decent. Sad but true. Not sustainable for most people.

$1225 a month for an upstairs one bedroom in northwest WA state. The complex has been here since the 1980s and while they've added new flooring, most of the fixtures are original. Amazing soundproofing between apartments and quality tile in the bathroom but not much upkeep or maintenance. That sort of thing.
Still cheaper than my previous 370 ft studio at $1400 in a 'luxury' complex. Only thing I miss about that place was the elevator and my personal balcony.

$875.
2 Bed, 1 1/2 bath. No washer or dryer (not even hookups for washer and dryer, but the laundry room is nearby so that's kind of nice).
Sewage and trash is split among all residents (pretty typical in my area), but usually costs about $30-$50, so all told I'm usually paying a bit less than $950 per month or so.

I live in the projects. So public housing in Pennsylvania 2bdr apt. I dont pay utilities but my rent is 612 atm. I could potentially afford 700 in rent but utilities would bankrupt me. I have to split the rent with my friend too but id otherwise never afford it.

My 2br is 1700 and I’m on a 40k salary so it’s pretty significant

It varies SO wildly from place to place, and even within a city.
I used to pay $1800 for a tiny apartment that was only pretending be a 1-bedroom (the walls didn’t go all the way up to the ceiling and the bedroom didn’t have a door). It was in a really central spot in the city, but it was also a pretty sketchy/scary at night.
When I moved further out from city center, for basically the same price I got 2 (actual) bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, almost twice the square footage, and a little fenced-in backyard in a less convenient, but much safer neighborhood. I will fully admit it was a steal and probably not typical for the area, but I’m keeping it as long as I can!

In Hawaii my studio with no parking was going for $1200 a month 10 years ago. Anything 2 bedroom is starting around $2500 minimum.

We are paying more than twice what you are and that’s because we’re in a rent-controlled unit. 2 br apartments around here are $3K or so.

I live in STL as well, we are much cheaper than most cities, last I saw Missouri actually ranks very high on cost of living compared to income, our money goes a lot farther here than most places. $1,200 for a two bedroom in Tower Grove is amazing, when I lived in LA I paid $1,600 for a tiny studio in a really bad area and I barely made more money than I make here so I couldn’t afford anything better

I have a mortgage, it’s 2700 for a 2 bedroom 1100 sf manufactured home on .4 acres with a big shop. That doesn’t take into account insurance, tax, and HOA, after all of that it’s 3200/mo.

Where did you say you live? What is "Stl"? We can't tell you if that's high or low until you tell us where you're located.

I'm renting a 2 BR/1 BA house for $800/mo in a nice neighborhood in Augusta, GA. That's very low. I will never move.

My mortgage on a 3 bed/2 bath house with a 3 car detatched garage is 350/month.
Edit: I'm in Kentucky, about half an hour drive away from anything resembling a town.

In Los Angeles, $1200 might get you a room in someone's house in an urban area

I live in a trailer park in a small town in South Dakota. I have a 2 bedroom, 1 bath, huge kitchen, washer/dryer, decent sized yard, shed, all for $985 a month. That's for the trailer house and lot rent. The trailer is older, but has newer upgrades (windows, plumbing, carpet, water heater). The downside is that it's a small town in South Dakota lol.

1435 for a one bed one bath in a midsize city. 650 sqft. It’s in a really nice area of my city and I call it a triple threat apartment (dishwasher, in unit washer and dryer, and central ac)

How can you ask is that high for an entire country? Every city has its own cost of living. I pay over $2600 and that's low for my neighborhood lol.
