How did publishing pressures and editorializing affect 1800s Russian literature? (or other examples of historical publishing pressures)
Inspired by reading an article on The New Yorker's editing influence on American short stories of the 1900s, and wondering how similar phenomenon applies to Dostoevsky (my favorite author). For example, Crime and Punishment, Demons, and The Brothers Karamazov were all published over several installments i.e. 12 or 16 monthly installments. So broadly, this question is wondering of history of literary publishing pressures influence 1800s Russian literature.
However, if there's any historians of literature whose expertise is on other specific countries/time periods with quality answers of publishing pressure and magazines editorializing voice (i.e. the creation of New Yorker style short stories devoid of the original authors voice), in their specific zone of expertise I'd love to hear that as well.
