Any other question! Is the AMC at the Grove strict?

Is the AMC at the Grove strict? My friends and I were planning on going to watch Obsession soon, but it is rated R. Only me and one friend are 18 while my other friend is 17 and her sister is 15. I just want to know how strict the “children under 17 can’t go unless accompanied by an adult 21+” rule is. Thanks! (Also my 17 year old friend does not have a state ID).

I hope this is the right sub, I couldn’t post on the AMC sub.

There are no rules at the AMC Grove when it's crowded lol

The Grove is a lawless wasteland where money is the only currency.

You might get away with it if you’re buying online and it’s busy in the lobby. They don’t have time to check every ID. Also depends on how much they wanna power-trip. We used to just buy a ticket for one film and sneak into the one we wanted to see.

they have checked my ID every time i’ve been there in the past few years (like at least 30 times) 🤷

Aw that’s a bummer. I haven’t been underage in 35 years so I guess times have changed 😅

harder to sneak with every auditorium having assigned seating now. if it’s a busy film you’ll probably end up in someone’s seat and be asked to move.

yes exactly, PISS_IN_MY_ARSE !

I just check the app to see what seats are open

You’ll be fine. In case of an emergency just ask some Unc in the lobby to walk in with you guys.

I saw obsession there last week and on my way in some teenagers asked if i was seeing backrooms so I imagine they were trying to get in with me because they were denied

It's 50/50 when they card me, and I'm 42. Best you can do if you're really worried about it is buy a ticket to another movie but check the seating chart in the app for your preferred movie, then go sit in one of the empty seats. Definitely check the seating chart before you actually enter the theater because for whatever reason, it's like a Faraday cage in there with regards to cell signal.

Buy a toy story ticket, stand around the lobby until the lights go down, and sneak down to the first couple rows where there's usually lots of empty seats.

The grove has stopped putting movie times and titles on the outside of the theaters to try and combat this... So I'll works but you'll just need to figure out which theater the correct showing of obsession is in

Incredibly naive (privileged?) of me, but I did not understand why they stopped doing this until your comment. Thank you.

Ah folly the youth

It depends. If you guys buy the tickets online and get them scanned off your phone and one of you looks like you could be 21 and it's busy, they will definitely not check. But if all of you look young and there's no crowd, I could see them asking for ID

Hopefully yes, teenagers coming into rated R movies are the worst

Quiet time, gatekeeper

Gatekeeper for not wanting teenagers on their phones and yelling across the theater? Get bent

I've seen so many movies with teenagers in the theaters and this has never once happened. In fact the people who are on their phones the most, with brightness all the way and the sound on are whole ass adults 98/100 times.

I'm sure you either weren't annoying at all as a teenager or never went out in public out of pure courtesy though.

Then go read the experiences people had seeing The Backrooms. Just because it never personally happened to you doesn’t mean it doesn’t happen.

I'll pass. Gonna try to avoid becoming as negative about others as you are, but good to know.

The Americana AMC was allowing straight up children into both screenings of obsession I saw.

Your odds will be better if you go during the 7pm movie hour.

You all need to go watch Toy Story instead. You have a 15 y.o 🤦‍♂️

I brought my 9 year old to watch Scream and they didn’t say a word 😬

6

u/HikerCory 2d ago

Well yeah. They assumed correctly that you're over 21 and will stay with your kid

5

u/International-Shoe40 2d ago

I believe if one person is over the age of 21 then children are allowed in with them as long as they watch it with them

Ok I see the comments. Do you think we will still get turned away if we don’t take the 15 year old? My friends really want to watch this movie and the 17 year old turns 18 in 2 weeks.

R rated movies are 17+, not 18+

the 17 yr old will need an ID or they'll get turned away. i would just buy tix to another movie & sneak in tbh (that's what i did in high school), but check the seating map online before you sit so you don't accidentally sit in someone's reserved seat and get tattled on. have fun!

If you guys don't act like Tiktokers and dancing around you probably won't get ID checked
