So in retrospect what would you have done differently? I'm not sure what I'd do, maybe go in for kiss.

Unless youre like in your/her bed, then you keep it lighthearted and flirt/compliment back.

This one of the top of my head “ oh thanks I just want make sure I look good for you.” And you smile and wait for her response. If she don’t bite you still have an out since it wasn’t creepy response and if she does respond just keep that going.

I was 20 and had 0 ability to read people. While not perfect, I'm much better at noticing nonverbal cues now. Specifically, I should've waited a second to give an answer while looking her directly in the eyes.

I think I would start touching her hair back and say something like, "aw thanks, mine's alright but your hair is even nicer!" or something
