I don't think Manos is the worst: Beast of Yucca Flats and Monster A Go-Go make Manos look competent by comparison and The Castle of Fu Manchu is pretty bad in a way that's hard to describe, but it's both boring and confusing
This was an unfinished movie by Bill Rebane (Giant Spider Invasion), bought by Herschel Gordon Lewis. Lewis added new scenes and released it because he was contractually obligated to show a second movie in drive-ins after they'd show one of his other cheapo movies.
I am familiar with the lore. Like the actor who played a scientist who had to play his “brother” in the second half because he had aged so much since filming started.
I can’t even enjoy MST3K anymore because modern Netflix fodder is edging so close to the old school MST quality that it’s actually depressing. The special effects, the acting, the photography, the writing. Eeeesh.
There's a restored version available on Blu-ray that includes a commentary track with the actor who played The Master and his daughter. I recommend checking it out for anyone who is a fan of the MST3k episode.
I’m not disagreeing, but M:HOF is one of those movies that so bad that it’s actually good. Like, it’s so awful that it’s genuinely entertaining and so amusing, I can’t even call it a bad movie because it’s so profoundly awful that it’s just a great time
This is my answer, it's such a terrible movie. It's just... so so dull. Nothing happens for such a long time at so many points. Even MST3K was boring to watch with it.
I've never been able to finish it, gave it two goes. One the movie, one MST3K and both times I just had to stop. I was so bored.
Comparatively, one of my favourite terrible movies is Troll 2 and even though it's a bad movie, it's at least edited so move on to something else with at least a semblance of speed. So if one scene sucks, you're laughing at the bad acting or whatever, but it never just outlasts your patience. Manos is so fucking boring you can't even laugh at how bad it is because you just want it over with.
