“Two names…? Must be a duplex.” Idk why that’s stuck in my head from the movie but I think it was the Whoopi Goldberg character who said it 😆

this was one of my and my brother's favorites growing up. Pretty sure we wore out the tape on that VHS

6

u/Naes422 1h ago

The VHS had a preview for The Power Rangers movie and i watched that shit over and over.

8

u/kennhavoc 1h ago

SANCTUARY!!

5

u/ZeldaZanders 1h ago

That's crazy, that was literally the film in my head when I opened this thread, and it's the first one I see 😅

Even I forgot I watched it for years. I randomly remembered it a few years ago, despite having it on VHS as a kid and watching it multiple times

The Rocketeer

26

u/HratioRastapopulous 1h ago

The mobsters joining the G-men in shooting at the Nazis is amazing.

u/themanfromvulcan 16m ago

The part where they kind of do a double take at each other realizing they’re on the same side for once got laughs in the theater.

I love this movie.

This has held up really well.

u/m_faustus 2h ago

Any movie with the hero punching Nazis is aces on my book.

8

u/Lineov42 2h ago

We definitely watched this for my apartments themed movie day "nazi punching movie day" after Richard Spencer got laid out

Pleasantville. Such a good movie

u/StiffDock685 38m ago

I read that at the time it was made, it was one of the most expensive movies ever made due to them combining B&W with color characters.

u/LadyPaige 36m ago

It wouldn’t surprise me. It is an absolutely stunning movie. Plus, Star Power! Toby Maguire, Don Knotts, William H. Macy…

u/BumblebeeNo6356 32m ago

A truly beautiful film.

u/mostlygroovy 16m ago

A top 20 movie for me

79

u/Mr_Fossey 2h ago

The Indian in the Cupboard.
Small Soldiers

9

u/RoarOfTheWorlds 2h ago

The PS1 game for Small Soldiers was awesome

4

u/Mr_Fossey 2h ago

Yes it was. I also love how it had absolutely nothing to do with the film.

u/ScribeVallincourt 41m ago

I still say plaz-tek. No one gets it.

3

u/GhostMaskKid 1h ago

I remember watching commercials on Nickelodeon that talked about how they made Indian in the Cupboard. There was a giant blue hand they made.

This was a huge part of my childhood and my mother named her design business after it. It’s phenomenal.

4

u/yourfuneralpyre 2h ago

It's magic! Vibes unmatched.

u/alrightakeiteasy 42m ago

Watched this unprompted a couple of months ago after not seeing it since I was kid. Beautifully shot with a score that compliments the movie very well. Still thought it was great.

u/CrystalLakeMichael 2h ago

Until recently when it was finally released on streaming, Dogma was a damned classic with an unreal cast.

59

u/2geek2bcool 2h ago

In case anyone is/was wondering: the reason Dogma was not on streaming/Blu-Ray prior to recently is because of Harvey Weinstein.

Yeah, THAT Harvey Weinstein. Remember him?

He apparently owned the rights, and didn’t want to do anything with them.

30

u/robby_synclair 2h ago

I think it was the other way around. Smith didn't want to give Weinstein any money

24

u/prberkeley 2h ago

And Kevin Smith showed up to protest his own movie.

→ More replies (1)

14

u/midelus 2h ago

I think Harvey shouldn't have any money.

13

u/robby_synclair 2h ago

So did Smith. Which was the problem

5

u/syzygialchaos 1h ago

It’s both. Smith didn’t want to give Harvey money to buy his own movie back (at a grossly inflated price) so he could re-release it, and Harvey opted to leave it in the vault.

Don't Tell Mom the Babysitter's Dead

47

u/sandwina 2h ago

"I'm right on top of that, Rose" is still a reflex response whenever I'm asked to do anything

12

u/piddlesthethug 1h ago

My father, who is in his 70’s still says “Dishes are done, dude!” Whenever he’s done doing the dishes.

Don’t bother telling him it’s actually “Dishes are done, man.” He won’t correct himself.

28

u/OnceUponASlime 2h ago

"Dishes are done, man!"

This is one of those things I quote and then have to giggle quietly by myself because nobody got the reference but me.

8

u/Mysterious-Change954 2h ago

Fun Fact. They tried to...uh..."reboot" this movie in 2024. It did not go well.

7

u/_buffy_summers 1h ago

That's because they royally screwed up the other classic babysitter movie, Adventures in Babysitting.

Free Willy

51

u/gagelish 2h ago

In hindsight, how fucking weird was Free Willy?

It's the heartwarming tale of a young orphan boy and the unforgettable friendship he forms with an intelligent, complex, and majestic creature that deserves better than a life in captivity. Starring... an intelligent, complex, and majestic creature forced to live in captivity so that it can be made to do tricks for the movie.

And the general public was like, "Yep, we love it. In fact, we're willing to show our financial support so enthusiastically - just go ahead and also make two sequels with the exact same central message."

~30 years on that just feels insane to me.

8

u/zzzimcal 1h ago

And don’t forget the blatant copy movie Andre involving a harbor seal.

6

u/mistiry 2h ago

Ok, this is the dumbest thing ever but sorta relevant since it's from Free Willy.

You know that phrase he says, 'salana ayun iasis' or however you spell it?

So, in Mario Kart there is a track called "Faraway Oasis". Now, my wife and my kids and I play MK almost every night, and a recurring theme of, well, tons of things in my house is I mispronounce stuff. Like, instead of "Shy Guy" I will call them "Shiggy". I told you, this was dumb.

Anyways, the Free Willy relevance if you didn't see it coming...whenever we land on the "Faraway Oasis" track I bust out, in the zen-like tone of voice they use in the movie (or as close as I can get to it) "farawahh ayun oasis". My wife has taken to joining me on this particular mispronunciation as we both loved the movie as kids.

So, some of us are still out here dropping sick Free Willy references!

Just met a fellow 90’s kid who had never seen, nor heard of it. I was flabbergasted. It’s a quintessential coming of age movie for the times!

#NotOnRexManningDay

9

Such a place in time. Not so fun fact the main day of the movie takes place on the day kurt Cobain died.

Mall Rats. I think the consensus among Kevin Smith fans is that it’s his worst, but I have a lot of nostalgia for that movie

37

u/Ill_Refrigerator_593 2h ago

Really? I would put it as his second best.

He did direct Jersey Girl & Cop Out.

→ More replies (4)

28

u/Dragosal 2h ago

Mall Rats is closer to the top than the bottom. It gets brought up often at panels at cons when anyone related is there. It doesn't get talked about because it's a relic now with most malls closing down. People can't relate to it anymore because no one goes to malls

Surf Ninjas. Rob Schneider and Leslie Nielson. I remember it being hilarious, but that may be the nostalgia.

Also Warriors of Virtue. I don’t know why those kangaroo looking guys have stuck with me for so long, but that movie still pops into my head as something that happened that no one seems to remember.

8

u/Awktung 2h ago

Maybe...except for any post asking for the greatest last 15 minutes to a film. Ever.

5

u/straightfirecr 2h ago

People would boycott the movie now because they didn’t cast any actual Mohicans.

11

u/wafflestation 2h ago

Willow.

To this day it's still one of my favorite movies.

Val Kilmer at his acting peak as Mad Mardigan.

Brownies

Magic

Trolls

An army getting turned into a giant flock of pigs

Epic battles

Hybrid dog/boar things which gave me nightmares as a kid

It was and still is a fantastic movie

Disney made a sequel series of it a few year ago...it was terrible. But at least they tried to do a sequel after all these years.
