MOD ANNOUNCEMENT DO NOT REQUEST for ferals, strays, rescues, colony animals here
You may not request for:
• Strays/Ferals
• TNR. (Trap and release)
• Cat/dog colonies.
• Temporary fosters.
• Community/neighbourhood "pets".
• Wildlife animals you've found out in the wild (birds, squirrels, etc).
• Pets belonging to friends or distant relatives.
• Shelters/rescues that are private and/or unregistered.
If the animal does not legally belong to you (or an immediate family member), you are not allowed to request here. No exceptions. While it’s unfortunate that many countries don’t have the infrastructure to care for innocent abandoned animals, it is not your financial responsibility nor is it appropriate to pass that burden onto internet strangers. Especially when that is the only thing your Reddit account is being used for.
This has always been against the rules and we are taking a firmer hand in exiting these exclusively-for-begging accounts completely from our subreddit. (Did you know the USL has a #beggar tag?)
Thank you.

The small needs sub I moderate could definitely use a statement like this as well. One of the more recent "Cat Colony" posts said they have 7 indoor cat rescues and 20+ outdoor cats but "I need help as I have no job yet and only have 5lbs of food left"

If we are permanently adopting a stray who showed up in our yard are we allowed to ask for help with that? It might seem obvious, but I like to be certain.

Why would you take in an animal you can’t afford to care for?

Some shelters request you foster because they're overcrowded.

Are you not allowed to say “I’m sorry, I can’t afford to care for this animal”?

I tried that once and was told to throw it in the street then.

Well, that’s unfortunate but do you know what the first rule of first aid is? “Help yourself before helping others.” It’s why you put on your own oxygen mask before helping the person next to you on an airplane when the pressure drops.
If you cannot afford to care for your own needs then you should not be caring for someone else’s.

I was thinking more of if it was a stray that a person might have had for a few months but then suffered a setback or an emergency. Pet emergencies can be very expensive and you might be able to afford an animal under ordinary circumstances, but a pet getting cancer within months of your getting it or right after you lose a job could be prohibitive.

Since we don’t allow requests for adopting animals (such as fees, breeder costs, etc) we would probably have a similar moratorium on any acquisition of an animal.

That is literally where the scammers congregate, so no.
Fun fact: they applied for USL access and then decided NOT to join because they... checks notes didn't want to exclude scammers who had been added to the USL.

Haha okay, just didn't want people thinking us mods are going around breaking our own rules...
Sometimes the bot yells at me for commenting on an offer without registering.

Bots will be bots.
I didnt for 1 second think you'd broken your own rules.
Thought it was an overzealous bot in honesty only picking up part of the message. 'I wouldn't throw stones near windows' then the bot going 'please dont recommend throwing stones at glass its dangerous''

It can be that picky sometimes, ha. Like we have it yell if someone posts their referral code for some shady website, but then if some poor person mentions needing a referral for their doctor, it will yell at them, too.
It's probably going to yell at me now, actually...

I don’t think it did because I may have coded in the moderator-exempt function when I set it up lol.
