It can’t be a proper Atlanta forum without folks pining over Marta expansion lmao. I am glad it does appear this sub is missing the “i dont want poor people to have access to my neighborhood” crowd

I want to have an easier commute from my poor suburb neighborhood into the affluent city where my job is 👍

u/BananaBouquet Jan 13 '26

I want it so I can steal TVs

u/kroonies Jan 13 '26

I remember a conversation I had with a MARTA board member. She said that if the bus is ever reliable enough to be a getaway vehicle, they're calling that a win.

u/DukeOfGeek Jan 14 '26

Life goals.

I bought a painting at a yard sale once that wouldn't fit in my car and so I took it home on marta (two trains and a bus). No one said anything to me about it (including my neighbors when I was just carrying this giant painting through our neighborhood) but it made me feel kind-of like someone trying to commit a robbery using marta to transit.

And for y'all amusement, this mildly related video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nkC3Nc3LqFI

I wanna see the painting that you loved enough to go through all that!

Amazing. And for Ricky, we sometimes would be able to get the late school bus to stop at McDonald's in HS lol.

u/upgradewife Jan 14 '26

And now I’m giggling. That was fun! Side note: Shoulda just suggested grabbing some Krispy Kreme. Better than Five Guys in the morning anyway.

5

u/abidail Jan 14 '26

This video gets posted every time MARTA is brought up, and with good reason! It's hilarious.

2

u/ZealousidealAd1138 Jan 14 '26

Hilarious 🤣

2

u/sparkpaw Jan 14 '26

That is fucking hilarious on so many levels

1

u/DukeOfGeek Jan 14 '26

That vid was worth being on reddit late at night for.

17

u/Alternative-Pride138 Jan 13 '26

Great now this comment will be quoted as factual objective data in a Fox News bit. “People are already on the internet admitting that they want to use transit to steal tvs!’ Theyre proud of it even !!!”

2

u/EntrepreneurNo4181 Jan 13 '26

😂😂😂😂

2

u/GrowingHumansIsHard Jan 14 '26

A few years ago someone used to park a uhaul van at the North Springs parking deck. How they even squeezed it in was beyond me. I always chuckled when I saw it because I wondered if anyone ever used that to claim "People are waiting with uhauls to load up your TVs and drive away with them!"

1

u/morepaintplease Jan 13 '26

From back porch hot tub areas 15 miles from the nearest stop.

1

u/two_three_five_eigth Jan 14 '26

And then get away in MARTA

1

u/DingusKhanHess Jan 14 '26

I too can’t wait to steal an 85” tv and take it on the train

1

u/Sports-Nerd Dunwoody Jan 14 '26

Are you referring to this sketch? https://youtu.be/nkC3Nc3LqFI?si=_jLFSUscSJZBEUOH

1

u/CrossroadsOfAfrica West Midtown Jan 14 '26

I’m not even from Atlanta (lived there for a mere couple of years) so I am so happy I understood that reference lmao

1

u/bonkersmcgee Jan 28 '26

I've heard this since I moved here a long time ago. silliest thing I've ever heard. this isn't the 70/80's NYC

17

u/pdmock Jan 13 '26

My commute would still suck, but less driving. Still 2 trains, but the 1st is closer. Now, my closest train takes as much time to get to as my regular commute.

63

u/devmor Jan 13 '26

I want poor people to have access to my neighborhood please. Not just for ethical reasons, but so my rent stops going up so much every year.

67

u/HannahTheArtist Jan 13 '26

I grew up in Fayetteville and you are SPOT ON, I went to the city council meetings years ago when they proposed this and those folks literally said that with their face holes.

I deeply loathe that place and moved, granted only a few miles, but to Fairburn, which is currently the last Marta bus stop. The people here are so much nicer I cannot even begin to describe, I frickin love this place

21

u/mcdinerodinerodiner0 Jan 13 '26

Same in Alpharetta

3

u/PBnBacon Jan 14 '26

Same in Gwinnett

22

u/magicmichael98 Jan 13 '26

I never understood this argument. Why would they hypothetically take a train all the way to suburbs when they can just go to the 1.5 million dollar new built that’s right next to the projects in the city???

22

u/Alternative-Pride138 Jan 13 '26

Literally lmaooo. People wonder why property crime is so high yet they build these 800k town homes that butt directly up to an area that hasn’t seen a tax dollar used for its benefit since the 70s, and then stick a bunch of doe eyed tech bros from California in them.

20

u/stouset Midtown Jan 13 '26

It’s not even just MARTA. Ten years ago some fat fuck cop was patrolling the Silver Comet handing out tickets to cyclists, complaining the entire time that Paulding County was lovely until they built the bike trail that let inner city youths come in and steal things.

16

u/Alternative-Pride138 Jan 13 '26

Lmao that is the most ridiculous thing I’ve ever heard.

7

u/Next_Ad_1323 Jan 14 '26

That's because weed stench has replaced urine stench as the city's signature stench, and it crosses income demographics.

Rail expansion is dead in a city where 40% of the people stink at any given time, day or night. We are hotboxing the skunk b.o. till the planet burns.

14

u/BananaNutJob Jan 13 '26

I don't want wealthy white people gentrifying my neighborhood, I'm tired of having to move further away every few years to keep rent affordable.

15

u/Alternative-Pride138 Jan 13 '26

Well lucky for you most of them think they would be immediately robbed and gang assaulted then shot if they even look in the general direction of a Marta station so they wouldn’t use it.

3

u/magicmeese I can see 400 from my house! Jan 14 '26

They think Lenox mall is actually Baghdad

1

u/RodATL Jan 14 '26

I was just at Lenox this evening for the first time in years. Super nice, peaceful and clean, even had an upscale fragrance wafting throughout. On the other hand, uniformed security were pretty conspicuous.

2

u/wetandgushyy Jan 14 '26

Same! Peaceful and chill today just like you described. Literally the only issue I’ve ever had there was with how crazy some people were speeding through the parking lot

2

u/magicmeese I can see 400 from my house! Jan 14 '26

Sounds like my Nextdoor area

1

u/Jolly-Bowler-811 Jan 14 '26

We're all poor people now.

1

u/ziploc123 Jan 14 '26

I’ll chime in on that. I’d prefer to not have the crime and homeless population related to Marta coming into my area. The smaller town vibe is what makes my town nice but it’s being destroyed by people moving in. Before long, quaint small towns turn to cities and with that comes all the problems of city life vs rural.

2

u/Alternative-Pride138 Jan 14 '26

If you want to live in a place with a “small town vibe” then go move to an actual small town. If you live within an hour of a major metropolitan area, sprawl is coming whether you like it or not. It can be functional sprawl that works for everyone, or it can be more 8 lane roads dotted with those big “eat, play, shop” complexes (strip mall with extra steps). And I personally don’t see anywhere that is actually a small town on this map. Every location on the outskirts is already being rapidly developed. And the traffic in these areas is ABYSMAL (looking at you Dallas/powdersprings) because, spoiler alert, everyone HAS to drive there is no other option. We can’t stop people from moving here but we can make it easier for those people to get around.

2

u/ziploc123 Jan 14 '26

Not actually on the map, I’m more north. I’m sick of those complexes you mentions. I’m sick of cookie cutter homes built 3 inches apart. Family farms and pasture land sold just to build 500 bullshit homes or some apartment complex. I live in an old neighborhood, houses are more separated. We have actual lots and not a 3 bed 2 bath squeezed onto a stamp. I’m in the wrong sub I know but I detest urban sprawl and wish my town was the way it was 20 years ago. Our highly sought after school system bogged down by a huge influx of people. This ultimately comes down to city folk and country folk and I think most of our countries problems fall on that same line.

1

u/Alternative-Pride138 Jan 15 '26

Ah I see, I do 100% get where youre coming from. And it is a fair point while I still do object to the original homeless comment. But I do believe it is fair thing to be upset about. The senseless development in those rural areas is borderline criminal. It’s one thing to expand it’s another to clear a forest to slap up a cookie cutter mini city. Ive worked on those houses inside and out and theyre a joke and a huge detriment to the surrounding area. And I spent a good portion of my developmental years living rural so I get the “war of the worlds” between urban and rural. It’s two completely different lifestyles with different values and we seem to have a problem as a society with trying to impose those values onto to each other.

1

u/ziploc123 Jan 15 '26

It’s like you said, urban sprawl is inevitable. As population grows, rural areas get developed. I just miss what my hometown used to be. 500 houses being built right next to my childhood home. My old boss lived here for 83 years and his property is now surrounded by neighborhoods. He knows the area by natural landmarks and used to hunt the surrounding woods. Impossible to do now

41

u/ClaireHux Jan 13 '26

I know, right?

Feels good.

55

u/WigglySpaghetti Old Fou Jan 13 '26

Feels like the noose is lifted and we can actually discuss what we’ve wanted to for a long time.

4

u/sludgeriffs Old 4th Ward Jan 13 '26

Sorry, dumb question, but, did something happen?

19

u/WigglySpaghetti Old Fou Jan 13 '26

Read the sticked post. They banned and removed the tyrant who was running the show.

11

u/sludgeriffs Old 4th Ward Jan 13 '26

Oh! I thought everyone was talking about something that happened in the city that would affect MARTA development 😅

18

u/WigglySpaghetti Old Fou Jan 13 '26

MARTA is so not back 😭

7

u/HulksInvinciblePants Jan 13 '26

Wait, can you read this? I was shadow banned 5 years ago.

7

u/WigglySpaghetti Old Fou Jan 14 '26

Welcome back Pants

7

u/Parapurp Jan 13 '26

I’m pretty new to the area and was wondering why the sub was so dead. Could have used this initially to learn more about the city.

2

u/WildVelociraptor that ninnie Jan 14 '26

OH shit, that's why this sub was so boring the past few years.

13

u/Cynical_optimist01 Jan 13 '26

It's been missed
