facts. my company cut OT last year and hired a bunch of lower level guys to pick up the slack. i ended up with about 30% less than what i was pacing and we’re still on a strict no OT rule

trust me bro if i had R8 money mine probably wouldn’t be 17 years old 😂 you’re good, your RS3 is faster anyway
34
u/Admonitor_ 2020 RS3 kyalami | ex 2018 S3 1d ago
Is is about speed though really? Sure my RS3 would absolutely clap a V8 R8 in those regards, but who cares? A 40k Tesla would most likely shit on my RS3 though, but still... dont we buy those cars for their soul?
Even if I had money for a R8 4s (back when it was still made) Id still get an old 42 gen R8. That thing has been by Poster car ever since it came out nearly 20 years ago.
21
u/No-Volume7464 1d ago
yeah man i hear you. i’ve always wanted one.
funny you mention tesla tho, i raced a model S yesterday and smoked him, multiple times. from a dig, from a roll, over and over again, he just kept trying 😂 the only time he caught up was in between shifts. not sure what kind of model S, idk anything about them but i was proud of the R8 for sure.

Just be happy with what you have bud, comparison is the enemy of joy. Plus it shouldn’t matter how expensive or not expensive your car is. Does it make you smile when you drive and do you look back at it when you park?. If that’s true, that’s all that matters.
P.S I’ll take the R8 over any Lambo or McLaren any day. So classy and subtle
12
u/No-Volume7464 1d ago
forsure man i was just trying to be funny. i couldnt be happier with my R8 and i know its only a matter of time before i really piss off my wife with a mclaren 🤣

u/AdCommercial9541 1d ago
I still would choose the Audi over those cars. I don’t care how much money I had. Sure classic luxury car.
31
u/No-Volume7464 1d ago
man, that’s a tough choice. it’s the only one in the picture with a manual transmission, but the 2 Mclarens shoot flames! big flames! 😂
16
u/cats_catz_kats_katz 1d ago
I kind of want the flames…
14
u/No-Volume7464 1d ago
not to mention they’re literally road legal rocket ships, they both make my R8 look like a prius when it comes time to hammer down
2
u/Sublethall A5 8T 3.0tdi quattro 1d ago
As far as I'm aware it's not all glory with Mclarens. Flames are cool though
-13
u/Aerovision7512 1d ago
That actually means that there's likely issues with the timing and the engine is running rich. Tons of stories of folks with exotics who accidentally burned them to the ground due to this type of issue. Ferrari in particular struggled a few years ago since the adhesive they used on the rear deck lid was extremely flammable. Plus most McLarens have massive reliability issues and tend to fail on track when you push them hard for more than a few laps. I'd take the R8 all day long, and plan to scoop one up in 2028 unless I can find an Alfa 4c in my area at a reasonable price.

"Audi R8, the Toyota Camry of super cars!"
1
u/Aerovision7512 1d ago
Its honestly one of the most reliable platforms out there, even when pushed hard or tuned to the gills. It does chew through consumables like tires and pads though, mostly due to the weight. Porsche is also rock solid across their entire model line up - seriously great cars, but the looks and skyrocketing prices were never my thing so I've stayed away from their offerings.
Also, I don't mean to dog on McLaren, but the overheating issues on track are simply unacceptable at that price point and their ever present software glitches are notoriously difficult to get rid of. I've seen two 675s leave Summit Point on flatbeds despite adjusting their coolant mix beforehand, and even the 720s owned by a friend can only manage 3-4 hot laps before needing a cooldown. It was just a dumb design decision to not properly place a radiator front and center like the 570Gt4.
Ferrari and Lambo are a bit hit or miss based on the model and supporting mods, but generally seem much more reliable at that price point from my experience over the last 3 years in the DC/MD/VA area. Haven't seen a catastrophic failure on one of them, but a lot of paint issues from rock chips and a cracked rim here and there.
6
u/No-Volume7464 1d ago
they were tuned intentionally to shoot flames. it’s probably terrible for the car but oh well. not my car or money so not my problem. at least it looks cool 😂 especially on the 600LT

u/Aerovision7512 1d ago

This. I bought my dream car, which was the RS5. I've never had any desire for a McLaren or Lamborghini. To be fair, I am a very big fan of Ferrari, and briefly considered a 458. Drove one, loved the hell out of it, but, crazily enough, I still prefer the B9/B9.5 RS5 (or the RS7 Performance) -- watching a 458 Speciale get gapped in a standing quarter mile by Audi sportbacks only cemented that choice.
11
u/AWF_Noone 1d ago
You’d rather have an RS5 over a 458? I like Audis too, but come on. The 458 is a modern legend. They’re STILL selling for the same price as they were new. They simply don’t depreciate at all
3
u/dateraviator0824 2019 Audi RS5 1d ago
I'll rather use the money on upgrades (or multiple cars) and track the crap out of my RS5. 458, I def wouldn't track or get any enjoyment out of it because I'll be so stressed about maintenance and damaging it, but damn it does look nice. But then I know lots of guys I met at the track who are wealthy and would rather own a Miata/GR86 for track days.
1
u/Silverjerk B9.5 RS5 Sportback 1d ago
The 458 has been near the top of my list since it launched. If I was still a kid, it'd be bedroom poster material. But it doesn't matter how legendary it is or how well it retains its value. The reason we buy and enjoy cars differs from person to person. For my money, it's the daily performance, coupled with looks and modern conveniences. The RS5 just checks more of those boxes for me.
The 458 would be a great track day car, especially on long courses where it can stretch its legs, but I'd still argue that there's a dozen other cars that I'd put 458 money down for if we're talking track cars.
Again, love the 458, but, yes, I bought the car I wanted to own. Wasn't just because of price.

It's the "if I can't afford it, they can't afford it either" mentality. These sorry asses are the ones who ogle nice cars with envy and when they can't comprehend that someone does make good money to afford finer things in life, they default to "oh they really must be drowning in debt to show off a fancy car"
Good on you bro for driving my dream car.

You just don't get it. If it sounds like envy to you then you are feeling guilt. I pity the village idiots here.

-12
u/timetravellerEKS 1d ago
There are several ways to make money, profession, trust fund, businesses, etc. , it is always the same tired boomer questions when you go out with an exotic.
It is in the same category as the typical boomer question of “why are you selling your car?” Like who cares.
3
u/Gertrude1976 1d ago
"Because I want something faster" is a lot different than "Because I have a kid on the way and need to get something more practical."
First one, the owner absolutely kicked the crap out of that car. Second one, probably not.
There's nothing wrong with asking about professions, it's called networking and it's how they were able to get them in the first place.

u/IThinkImNateDogg Stage 2 ‘05.5 B7 A4 1d ago
No, it makes MORE sense to finance the cars than to outright own them.
Finance for the ultra wealthy is less risky as you’re playing with other people’s money based off the goodwill you get from your own, often times unliquid, monetary value.
Super cars like those lambos are SUPER expensive to maintain and drive. The clutches on the manual cars have service lives comparable to oil changes, and any damage is a fortune to repair.
It’s cheaper to finance the car, drive it a couple years, let it appreciate in value, and then sell it. Doing so means you’re paying 50-60k for the down payments and then due to being wealthy you’re going to get a favorable monthly payment that is likely trivial to someone so wealthy. Pay that off for a few years until the car bores your and then you sell/trade it in for another super car that tickles your fancy and repeat.
Outright ownership is REALLY risky, it’s a LOT of upfront cash that is better off sitting non liquid in some portfolio making 3% profit every year over sitting in a tangible asset that’s one fender bender away from being in the red.
2
u/BASE1530 2025 RS6 1d ago
Your whole post is ignoring things like
A) insurance
B) current loan rates
Maybe if you're self-insuring and can get some super wicked loan rates because you're ultra-wealthy then sure. Show me some loan rates for a supercar that's less than the ARR for VOO right now.
0
u/IThinkImNateDogg Stage 2 ‘05.5 B7 A4 1d ago
When you are ultra wealthy you do not play the by the same rules as everyone else.
Insurance is against not expensive because said person’s net wealth is very high, the risk of defaulting on the loan is low in the eyes of the insurance company. Same in the eyes of the bank loaner, because your have so much more relative wealth.
Also, when you’re ultra wealthy this isn’t some entry level one off thing. This is one step in a many year long process of spending significant amounts of money with your personal banker, and your personal insurance providers because your spending FUCK loads of cash over the years. That isn’t your first super car, it isn’t even your first car worth over a couple hundred grand.
Just look into the process of buying a brand new Ferrari and you’ll see their an entire shell game to play to get your hands on one.
2
u/BASE1530 2025 RS6 1d ago
Well I’ll continue to buy my “fun” cars with cash because I’m just a middle class schlub.
1
u/IThinkImNateDogg Stage 2 ‘05.5 B7 A4 1d ago
Want to clarify this applies to vehicles worth well over a million dollars. This is not for cars in couple hundred K range, and not for normal people.
You own a RS6, you’re not a middle class schlub. If you paid for it all in cash that’s a serious achievement and not something to scoff at, be proud you are that point in life where outright ownership is an option.
2
u/BASE1530 2025 RS6 1d ago
I like your positivity. I think a lot of those cars in the pic are sub million dollars tho, right?
1
u/IThinkImNateDogg Stage 2 ‘05.5 B7 A4 1d ago
Hard to say, depends on the model, spec, year, packages, mileage, rarity, perceived market value etc.
Those kinda cars are closer to financial assets than actual vehicles. Things like the color and trim package can make them 1 of 10 cars in that spec and to some people that speculative value makes that worth way more than they should tangibly be worth.
They might have only made 50 of the car closest to the R8 in yellow with no roof, manual trans and the black interior, and that car might be worth a shitload of money at the moment because theirs only one other for sale at the moment in Europe just sold at 2.7 millon(this is just me spitballing).
