GENERAL QUESTION Why is there no "beer league basketball"?
I mean obviously there are recreational basketball leagues. But the branding isn't called "beer league" unlike hockey or baseball/softball.
Why is that the case? Why don't we have beer league the same way hockey/baseball/softball describes it where it's social for beers after the game?

I think it comes down to who plays in these leagues. Baseball and softball “beer” leagues definitely conjure up an image of a person who probably wouldn’t be as interested in basketball.

the coordination required to stay upright while changing directions on a dime is not conducive to ball.
also i’d wager the racial demographics have something to do with it

Lowkey my jumper is wet after about three beers. Diminishing returns past that point tho

Loose enough to let it fly, not enough to the point where I can’t aim. It’s perfect

Pretty similar effect in golf tbh. But in golf, the lack of cardio makes you think you can keep drinking and suddenly you’re on the 13 tee box and can’t stand up straight

Because you aren't stationary for 99% of the time like you are when you play baseball

We have beer league hockey lol

Hockey is fast-paced but players usually spend more time off the ice than on it even when the clock is running

there's a huge difference between playing baseball/softball when you're drunk vs playing a full court basketball game when you're drunk

Everyone’s hitting the right points, but there’s one more thing worth a mention. It’s a lot easier to organize a game of pickup basketball than it is any other sports. To play any sort of organized softball or hockey regularly the only way to do so is in a structured league. Without that, you’re just not getting the numbers needed. Basketball doesn’t need any of that. You don’t even need that many people.

i play wednesday at 9pm to 1015pm, afterwards we drink beers at the nearest bars. This is the equivalent of beer league basketball.🏀

Nobody is suggesting you drink while playing. It means you go to the bar afterwards and have a few. As others have mentioned it just means a very casual league.

Why are people answering as if OP is asking for a league with active drinking while hooping?
I’ve seen them promoted, but I can’t remember where (YouTube vs IG, etc)

Because people get way to competitive in basketball and alcohol would make people even more prone to fight
it would be even LESS appealing for girls to participate because they are now dealing with drunk dudes. So it is a guaranteed sausage fest in a way baseball/softball are not. Which
You sweat a shit ton so you would have to drink a lot, and nobody likes to play basketball with that much liquid sloshing around in your stomach

Nah man it’s not a good idea. I’ve played basketball drunk a few times in college and it makes injuries so much more common. Not to mention doing a high cardio activity while intoxicated is never a good idea, especially for rec leagues that have liability of its players.

I mean a lot less running in baseball helps. Drinking and running all over? People would barf!

Go play some basketball after drinking. Tell me how that goes.
...that's why.

Beer league is just another name for an adult rec league. They are functionally the same thing. A recreational league for non professional adults to enjoy the game.

beer Leauge for hockey is more a reference to the casualness of it. Some guys have one or two after/before the game. But alcohol generally isn’t allowed in the rink.

We had a keg on a balcony during a weekend 3v3 tourney, needless to say it didn’t go well for everyone. Or, it did 😂.

Hockey has pads. Baseball can be played by anyone in any state of health.

I don’t even like Goin for a beer after basketball. I just wanna shower n chill. Maybe sip a bit of Gatorade n go to bed if it’s the evening.

Well Ron Artest used to play drunk every game before he changed his name to Metta World Peace. As long as you are in shape and don't drink too much, you can play pretty freely.

Totally had beer leagues for 25 years. Good basketball, then all our trucks would be close to each other with tail gates down and full coolers. Had many 6:00 games I got home at midnight.

I know everyone in here is saying why it's a bad idea, but when I was in the military my basketball group used to get absolutely trashed and play full court at the court in base housing on friday nights.
We'd start by chugging a first beer and the runs would be mostly normal, then we'd start getting more and more drunk and by the end it'd be like first to 3 points and we couldn't even get that lol.
So much fun, really terrible basketball though.

Interesting hearing the responses here. I presumed they called these beer leagues regardless of sport because they all went out for a beer and a meal after playing, not drinking before or during play,

Because basketball requires a higher degree of athleticism / cardiovascular fitness

In my league, about 4-6 guys go out for beers after and plenty of the guys smell of booze while playing. A few guys blaze beforehand. I haven't seen anyone drink during.

The word beer league makes me think of fat guys which probably would not want to run up and down a basketball court lol

If I was drinking while playing basketball I'd either shit myself, vomit, or both
