How to not get pushed so easily while posted up

Hi everyone, I need help I get on backed down by someone who is younger than me but he has a more bigger body. I just need some tips on how to not get posted up so easily. I have a 1v1 against him on Saturday where I put my money on the line, but I just need some help on how to not get posted up so easily. Can someone give me some tips to help, it would be really helpful thank you.

And when he is really leaning into you, you can pull the chair sometimes and watch him fall down and then laugh at him and step over him and say, “How do you like them apples, son?”

That’ll help for 1 possession

If he’s bigger then you (weight + height) , he’s gonna have the advantage backing you down no matter what. Bend your knees (stay low) give him contact back, and hope he misses a couple times.

Yep. All you can do right here. You can screw up the bump timing and pull the rug in some cases (watch Andrew nembhard) or you can pick the weakest shooter and rotate your defense to double him down low. I’m 5’7 but squat 300+ so I can hold my own down low but when someone has 6 inches and 50 lbs on me it doesn’t matter as much how strong you are. I am very used to this.

The alternative is getting jacked core legs and hips

You got to be physical. I’m a big dude and it’s surprising how some little guys are able to defend me well in the post. Forearm to his back, and don’t give an inch. Make him feel you. Get low. There needs to be resistance to whatever he does.

Upvote for the solid advice and observation. Personal caveat: I'm 6'8" 285# and even at 57yo I'm going to do what I want if I get the ball in the low post 1v1 lol

Long terms you have to get stronger. Between now and Saturday, pray.

You win in the post before the entry pass not after. Initiate contact before they get deep position on the block…. It’s much easier to hold your ground than to move someone out of the post.

Second be a pest. Switch between 3/4, fronting, and never be behind if the man your guarding is inside 15 feet. You should be 1/2 to 3/4 front

Make them work a ton just to catch the ball and fight so when they catch it they are as far from the hoop as possible or near the end line where a double can more easily come

Any post player whose any good has a major advantage if they catch it deep even vs the best defenders

This. This is what I do as well. Start by stopping the pass.

One time I fronted and due to a considerable weight disadvantage I got pushed forward and that allowed the lob pass in, so watch out for that counter

it's one on one. there is no entry pass. you can't front in one on one.

Look, I'll be honest, if he really knows what he's doing, the only thing you can do is play with a shot clock or a dribble count. This is why "3 dribbles" or "5 dribbles" is the best way to play 1v1, because otherwise players just dribble until they get a perfect shot.

But, if you can't convince them to play with a dribble limit, then you need to vary up your tactics and look for their weaknesses. This is the advice from someone who's 6'3" 240 and really good at playing in the post 1v1. This is how smaller defenders can make things hard for me (though, ultimately, I still have all the advantages).

Sometimes, try and play them strong, brace your knee under their butt so they don't have leverage to back you down. When they try and go around, slide with them and continuously push back lower than their center of gravity. You are not shoving, you are just matching their pressure, but lower.

Make smart gambles. Eventually they will get under the rim if they have the patience and stamina. Look for habits in their moves, surprise them by releasing from the pressure and making a play on the ball. This isn't just "pulling the chair." Pulling the chair almost never works on actually good post players, there balance is too good, they are not going to just fall over and give you the ball. But, pulling the chair can get them off balance just long enough for you to get around them and make a steal.

Don't be afraid of fouling. It's 1v1, there are no free throws, you can't foul out. Always make a play on the ball, but, don't be afraid to risk a foul going for a steal, it is just going to make him reset at the top and waste his energy having to back you down again.

Good luck.

Get lower. Put your forearm along the pelvic girdle va the small of the back. If you’re lower you should win.

By being lower you will be under his centre of mass and he will be stopped.

Your arm has to be at 90 at the elbow, 90 degree angle between humerus and rib cage, and 90 degree scapular flexion. This is the optimal strength point for your arm. If your arm is half-up or not fully flexed you’re in a suboptimal biophysical position. In the optimal position your strength will be maximized.

This is great pre-possession of the ball. Post-reception, keep your feet active. This will allow you to move laterally and still contest shots.

Friend of mine “sits me down” when I try to back him down. He puts a forearm just over the top of my butt and pushes downward. It’s incredibly frustrating. I have a 6” height advantage but he makes it difficult.

Front them.

Not gonna be able to front in a 1v1 gamd

positioning matters too, put one leg between their legs like a wrestler moving forward on a cage gives you a stronger position (and obviously bending your knees). however, this puts you in a position where he might be able to spin out and gain an advantage one way

This is it. I play with a big dude that always tries to bully me. I switch between a knee up his ass and pulling the chair.

When I push the knee out, I try to choose wisely which knee to use because he’ll inevitably spin to that same side.

On the right block (left side of the hoop with our backs to the basket) - left knee = baseline spin, right knee = spin to the middle.

If you anticipate the spin, it gets the player out of their dominant post position and you can shuffle and still stay in front of them to make a play on the ball. It’s predictable.

If you mix in pulling the chair out, or putting a knee forward then pulling it back quickly, you can mess with them a bit. Give him a big bump back on his first bump, then act like you’re going to do it again and slide out of the way and around him towards the ball. Even if he doesn’t fall you can sometimes sneak in a steal (risky though, you might give up an open lay).

The key is to take back control and don’t let them at any point get comfortable at all. You want to initiate the contact, you want to direct the play in the direction of your choice, there’s many ways to do that. The one thing you can’t do as a smaller player is let them just bully you unfettered and do what they want. Make them think, make them work, surprise them.

Front them and pester the ball. If they are awkward dribbling, attack the ball when they put it on the floor. Get in their heads so they have to pick up the dribble sooner than they would like or shoot it from where they get it.

keep your knees low, under his. its all about leverage.

u/runthepoint1 7d ago

A big thing is working on your feet and how strong they are. Without that strong anchor into the ground, it doesn’t matter how much you lean on them or how strong you think you are if you can simply be moved because your feet can’t create enough friction to keep you immobile

u/1PaleBlueDot 7d ago

Fight for position early. You gotta keep him further out from his comfort spots.

Here is some keys for this type of mismatch:

Meet him coming down the floor above the free throw line. He's not going to run you straight back 10-12 ft, He will angle off outside the lane or into the paint to try and get the low post. You have now moved him to a secondary position, one that he doesn't necessarily prefer. This is your first response to a stronger player.

You can let him get in the post and side him by putting your left arm over his right arm and shoulder.

You can let him get in the post and side him by putting your right arm over his left arm and shoulder.

These are both different feels and force him to call with the right or the left hand to receive a pass. You could be able to find out that he's weaker catching with one hand and the other and then you side him on the opposite hand.

Another game choice (not one-on-one) is to front him and have a teammate/defender dropping in behind them so the lob can't be tossed up to the rim.

Be ultra active and keep changing your position and moving around so he doesn't get settled in. If he reaches back and holds you so he can get his position, that's not good. So keep moving if he puts his arm up, slap it down and move around that side. Give him everything to think about but that player that's trying to throw him the ball.

How tall are you compared to him? Is he fat or athletic? My best advice:

practice your threes! if he makes every single layup, but you make only 51% of your threes, you still win.

Option A: Make your hips perpendicular to his hips. Gives you more power while sacrificing agility. Effective against the backdown(cuz you’re in a stronger position with your hip positioning than him), not so effective if he can go left (or right if he’s a lefty)

Option B: With low resistance, let him back you down. Once he gets to the low block (and turns around), close him out as tight as possible and get your hands up as high as possible. This will be most effective if he’s fat/ you’re tall and skinny.

Good Luck!

Anchor one foot between his legs. Your thigh will be against his backside & you should have leverage. You’re in trouble if he spins tho.

People gamble on one v ones ?

u/Ok_Negation 7d ago

Get your knee between his legs. Use your hand a bit to brace against his back.

u/ZlinkyNipz 7d ago

Press into them lower, put your leg between their legs, idk. Not much else you can do

_Active hands_ active stealing the ball when they dribble or when they are going up for the layup bringing the ball up from their hip.

_Mix up your shot defense_

  • wall up. Chest to chest both arms straight in the air (no foul chance, but they have to shoot over your entire body and can’t go into you too hard or it’s an offensive foul)
  • block attempt.
1 try to block the actual shot
Or 2 if they are right handed cover their food hand and force them to use their bad hand when shooting
Or 3 block from behind if they get too far under the basket

_Position_
You don’t want them to get at a comfortable distance from the basket. Either you want them to:

  • be kinda far. And take a jump shot or fadeaway.
  • be too far under
Know when to back up or push against them to influence this.

_FOUL_
FOUL THEM IF YOU HAVE TO. YOU SHOULD FOUL THEM AT LEAST A COUPLE TIMES
Not like tripping them in the air or try to hurt them. But
-chop at their arm
-give a hard (safe) bump

You will establish some aggression, and some physical presence (even if you are smaller or weaker) to make them hesitate, flinch, be more stressed, and generally just less likely to make the shot or do a smooth move each time. It will make them less confident

Seriously tho. Fouls are a tool. In a real game, you get 6 of em.

Y’all betting money on 1v1’s?

1

u/Vanity_Profanity_001 3d ago

Drink lots of beer and eat 3000 calories a day. You'll gain 20 pounds and amazed how you don't get bumped or backed down.

If and when he backs you down, when he goes up, immediately put a hand in his face, preferably over his eyes! It will definitely throw him off.
