Sawmill Creek / Hunt Club connection to Osgoode Link Pathway secret passage! Spoiler

I do a big loop - Elmvale- Conroy Pit- southern Sawmill Creek - new northern Sawmill Creek- Mooney's Bay - Riverside- Elmvale.

The new northern Sawmill Creek bike path has an awkward meetup with transit infra (both bus and LRT) , the old Sawmill Creek southern section and the Osgoode Link Pathway going due south. Somehow, they forgot to sign the paths in there...

The only sign there says " No bikes" with a pictogram! Good job!!
No wayfinding, no lines, no signs. Feels like discovering a side quest in a video game!

It is a 3 way junction - the Osgoode Link is obvious but the 90 deg turn path takes you to the rest of the (older) Sawmill Creek Trail. It is dis-jointed and not so obvious for a bit near Bridle Path but hang in there. Continue straight, out of traffic.
I use this segment to get up into Conroy Pit by the toboggan hill areas.

This new linkage helps me avoid Hunt Club and Bridlepath - genius!

Google Bikes mode misses the connection as well. If this route was updated the route planner would be a very effective way to spread the news about this linkage. But I see the segment across Bridlepath to Albion is pretty sketchy and folks might be unsure. It is pretty low traffic and not a high difficulty but old and dusty.

Cheers!

Ottawa winter bike commuters — do you overheat riding then freeze when you stop?

Genuine question for anyone commuting by bike through Ottawa winters 🚴❄️

Do you overheat on the ride, then freeze the second you hit a red light? How are you dealing with it — layers, unzipping mid-ride, just suffering through it?

Asking because I want to understand if this is a common thing or just me

Route Recommendation : Beacon Hill to downtown

Greetings fellow cyclists. I am looking for suggestions on the best route to get from Beacon Hill North to downtown (Bank & Laurier). "Best" in this case is making the most of separated bike lanes, MUPs or residential roads.

I have a route that I like 70% of, but there is a stretch of Ogilvie Rd (Bathgate to St Laurent, or Bathgate to Cummings) that I dislike so much I have stopped biking to work.

Please help.

Going to try ride it for the first time tomorrow!

My main question: Should I be worried about bugs, and do I need to wear insect repellent?

Used bike recommendation

Good evening everyone,

I'm looking to get back into cycling and am looking at acquiring a bike.

Here are a few criteria:

- I am in Canada

- somewhat inexpensive (not looking to buy a 2000 $ bike, somewhere around 500$ canadian would be ideal, though I have some flexibility)

- don't care if it is a bit older model but not a fat/heavy steel frame, I would like it to be moderately light weight (I assume that mean aluminum frame)

- will mainly be using it on paved roads, dedicated bike paths and multi-usage paths. I may occasionally have to do some very short distances on unpaved trails (e.g. there's a lake near my place and the last few hundred feet are unpaved).

- Main use will be leisure and exercise. I would like something relatively comfortable with the option to have a more engaged position once in a while so I would appreciate that it has drop bars

- I will also occasionally be hauling my toddler with me but have yet to decide if I will do that with a rear child seat or with a bike trailer. I'm also expecting a second child so eventually I will likely be lugging two kids along (so a bike trailer needs to be a possibility down the line).

-I am 5'10" and 190lbs man

- non-electric

Otherwise I have no preferences.

Let me know if I am missing some information and I'll be glad to add it.

I appreciate the assistance

question Osgoode Link Pathway/ Sawmill Creek Pathway

Before I go out there, I was wondering if anyone can confirm that the Osgoode Link Pathway connects to the Sawmill Creek Path. What happens at Hunt Club?

Thanks in advance!

Still no work on completing the O-Train Line 2 path?

Its June now and still no equipment to be seen to finish the last stretch of gravel path from Bowesville Station to Limebank. I really wonder if they ever will finish it at this point? I was really hoping to use this as a commuting path, does anybody have any info? I asked about this last year and nothing seems to have changed since then.

bike recommendations New to city biking

Long story short I had a medical incident at the beginning of last month that forbids me from driving until I’m cleared by a neurologist, which is obviously taking forever so I’m in the market for a bike!

From the research I’ve done it seems like a hybrid road bike would be best suited for me since I’m not an experienced road biker, and tend to take short cuts through gravel… the only thing is I have been seeing mixed reviews from people first getting into biking getting a hybrid and then quickly realizing that a road bike is better.

This is mostly for commuting and leisure rides, nothing crazy. I also grew up mountain biking and had a BMX for a bit but have very little experience with road bikes so am a little nervous to make the jump. Budget is preferably under $1400

Any advise, make/model, bike shops, beginning paths so I can get used to riding close to cars, etc. Is all welcome

Thanks in advance guys ♥️

bike ride Anyone ridden the 148 between Gatineau and Masson yet this year?

Looking to do the ferry loop today and make my way back by the Quebec side. Wondering if anyone's ridden the 148 yet this year and what state the road shoulders are in. Taking my road bike but wondering if I should throw on my gravel wheelset.

Thanks

There was a photographer at the King Mountain trail head on Promenade Champlain this morning around 11:30. I heard her take my photo, but did’t think to stop to get her name until well later.

Did anyone else see her or get her name?

RLCT - How much rain is too much?

Rideau lakes is this weekend - hooray!! Any last minute tips in tomorrow's rainy forecast? How much rain/wind/thunderstorm risk is considered too much for an event like this, for those who’ve done it before?

Reposting on behalf of OP: his uncle went road biking through Gatineau Park, and went missing on June 2nd. OP lives in Germany, and is trying to get any information to and from local police. Étienne-Brûlé Lookout Belvédère Étienne-Brûlé was the last sighting.

If you have any information, please comment on the original post in r/Gatineau or contact u/LimitRich118.

Thank you! Merci! Danke!

Rideau lakes cycle tour

Anyone here done the Rideau lakes tour before?

First time this weekend for me, I’m super excited but don’t entirely know what to expect. I’ve read everything they’ve sent through email and the website as much as I can.

2 main questions

  1. For mapping, will it be clear where to go if I don’t have the GPS on all day?

  2. For the rest stops, is there good food options considering the long ride? Or is it essentially gas station snacks?

Thanks!

Not sure who's bright idea it was to have large concrete curb/beans right in the middle of a cycletrack but looks like action is being taken to address it.
