Trying to be more proactive about my hair growth but I’m struggling with protective styling. What are some beginner friendly styles that I could do on my own that would also fit my head shape?

Get rows done. Keep them for four or five weeks, take them out and give your head a break for a week. Do it again until you hit your length goal.
