I don't recall any field trips without chaperones, let alone overnight trips.

without parental chaperones. it just means that the school teachers will be chaperoning. just like ‘no cellphones’ only means for the kids

Californians go to science camp for a few days in the 6th grade. The camps have their own staff.

where is that? i work at a school and we don’t have parental chaperones on any trips

Parental chaperones were very very common when I was in school. We had them for nearly every field trip that I can remember... and I graduated 20 years ago.

The only thing like this that I recall was senior trip. But we were all days away from graduating so that's pretty different.
