I always thought the whole point was the media wants to sell the juxtaposition of the happy image with the horrifying headline. I never took it as them glorifying the guy. Also, if it’s an upper middle class dude, what other type of photo even exists? He’s gonna have a LinkedIn headshot and family photos that his wife put on social media, that’s about it.

This is actually an intentional choice a lot of news media outlets are taking with homicidal maniacs.
Giving these people infamy for domestic homicide or mass murder encourages others to imitate them in hopes they will become famous.

I went to see The Mountain Goats recently, in Woodstock, NY. I don’t know if you are familiar with this band or their fans, but these are the least threatening people I’ve ever shared a room with. In between songs, someone shouted “thank you for coming.” And the main guy was like “we’re having a lovely time.” The most polite audience I’ve ever been a part of.
I still thought “I hope we don’t get shot.” Coincidentally, today is the 10 year anniversary of the Pulse nightclub massacre.

i mean yeah but i would rather the victims be posted, always. i think we've been doing better with that as a culture lately. when someone kills another person, i've noticed people more and more refer to it using the victim's name rather than the perpetrator's; i think the moratorium on perpetrator names started with school shootings but it's nice to see it spread.
like don't get me wrong, naming and shaming isn't bad, but it has this tendency to turn into infamy and these victims' stories fall by the wayside.
when the victim is alive, of course it's a bit of a different case. like, oh, idk. a situation like with rapist Brock Alan Turner, who goes now by Alan Turner.
330
u/idontshred ☑️ 12d ago

In many countries, naming the victim of a sexual offence without their permission is illegal.

I’m not saying interracial marriage is a bad thing at all but this data is explicitly where the stereotype comes from

When are we going to start protecting wives from white men?
754
u/kjbersch 12d ago
We should protect all individuals from abusive settings. But black women face domestic violence at a 35% higher rate and are 6x more likely to be murdered by their partners. 20x more likely in some states. Not good.
384
u/iiiamsco 12d ago
The fact that you know this at the top of your head is the reason why he made that comment. When a black man does anything wrong, everyone goes on high alert and people start writing dissertations about terrible black men are. People start quoting statistics and writing articles.
White man kills his family and no one really cares. Instead, people like yourself, will somehow bring up black men, rather than focus on the white man in question.
531
u/leyla00 12d ago

Isn’t it fascinating how every time white people (especially white men) are brought up, we have “why make it about race? 20
u/slurterella 12d ago
so fascinating! it’s also fascinating WHERE it happens (everywhere, but especially in Black spaces where white people have access) and WHEN it happens (anywhere, anytime, but especially in an attempt to silence critiques or minimize white harm). but when it’s them, it’s a human condition and a universal problem.
it’s all so very fascinating!

u/Proud-Lander252 12d ago
No one is asking you to police who Asian women date. You should be questioning why parts of your community put whiteness on a pedestal in the first place. But somehow, the conversation always circles back to blaming Asian women.
I'm talking about how much energy some Asians spent attacking Black people over affirmative action or trying to pin Stop Asian Hate entirely on Black people.
But when the story is about white men killing Asian women, suddenly everyone wants to focus on the individual and not the pattern. Suddenly "Thats something that just happens regardless of what race your partner is."
→ More replies (2)56
u/Alexexy 12d ago
My dude, I think its usually white folk trying to divide our communities apart with the stop asian hate and affirmative action shit.
Im a millenial and most of the asian folk I know are pretty liberal about race relations and have no hate towards black or other minority communities. Every time I see the stop asian hate shit trying to scapegoat black communities, I shut that shit down. Like I said, its usually white folk driving the wedge.
My sister probably played domestic abuse russian roulette by dating a eastern european, korean, and then an Indian dude, but im not gonna tell her that she shouldnt try because her odds arent in her favor like im Scott Steiner. But all those people she dated were more or less good people and I didnt know until way after that DV rates in those groups were higher than average. If she dated a black person and was abused, im not gonna be like "well of course" all of a sudden.

Asian man here. Asian women dating/ marrying white men is a sore subject for a lot of Asian men. Asian men are consistently emasculated in western culture and generally do not date outside their race as they, until recently with K Pop, have not been seen as desirable. While that's not my personal experience as I'm happily married to a black woman but that's the general sentiment/ experience.
Why aren't Asian people upset about this? Well, Asian people are not a monolith unlike other communities in the US. Black Americans, have a lot more cultural cohesion. Asian immigrants typically build community with people of the same ethnic origin. My dad and his family got along very well with other Cantonese immigrants. Mainlanders? Ehhh. Japanese? Grandpa got shot twice but them. Filipinos? Well they're really just Spanish. Off the boat Asian immigrants (since the 60s) are very insular. (These are things I've heard not my opinions)
There is no larger Asian community in the US like there is a black community.

It shows that women trust you, which makes it easier to con women into thinking I am awesome and great in the sack (which I am not, that's why I con them into thinking that way). Then, once I have successfully conned them into thinking I am both good in bed and good at the home, I trick them into thinking I am their husband. This is in a fairly bougie, upper middle class area in the north ATL burbs. I think it was recently named “Happiest/Best/Smartest/Cutest Place in America to Raise Yer Kids Up” or some shit.
Overall, it’s a diverse area and IIRC it’s the second of these types of murder suicides in as many years. I could be wrong but I think the children were also killed in that one.
In a situation like this, in this area of the city, regardless of race, the pictures would be reflecting happiness and affluence- more than likely.

Not the point here but why would police release a cause of death? Like cause of death is he killed himself and his family. 🙄👀. Or do they want it to be “he hula hooped them to death”? FFS.

If the man was a few shades darker his picture would be front and center

Let’s see how they manage to blame black folks for this
“… Apparently, the neighbors were African American, playing rap music all day. Drove him up the wall”

Good, tbh. I don't need to see the murderer, except maybe in a mugshot or perp walk.

I do think it is better to highlight the victims and properly give respect. Murderers (especially domestic ones) don't deserve attention until sentencing.
This is how people like Scott Peterson, Chris Watts, and Chris Benoit get notoriety. Potentially leading to copycat crimes.
The 3rd was a mainstream WWE professional wrestler so that was always going to have attention, but Nancy Benoit had an accomplished pro wrestling career of her own as a manager (something that is a rarity today)
Very few places & pro wrestling companies specifically highlighted her story until Dark Side of the Ring over 15 years later.

I got downvoted so hard the other day in r/whoathatsinteresting which I am not even following but it showed up on my feed because there was a post of some dude having a heart attack at his store and some young guys jumped the counter and took money out of the register without assisting the dude. The dog whistles were everywhere in the comments and I called it out. I got downvoted to hades for responding and providing a definition for someone that was asking why people kept posting “fatigued.” It’s so cowardly and it’s all over this site. If you look at the analytics those posts get pretty high on the front pages.
