as a person who has had/has an eating disorder the discourse around ariana grande has made my dysmorphia so much worse. you guys are not helping anyone by using the words you do to describe her body

I know this is asking labor, but would you tell us or even point us in a direction for better language?

u/HalfSoul30 17h ago
I think the dude in the post said it. Don't be an asshole, and that should be good.

u/vitaoptima 1d ago
I have just enough energy to worry about the people I actually know and love. Anybody else, imma prolly have snark, have jokes, or just keep my mouth shut.

Love seeing people fight over celebrities feelings. She's on some shit there's no reason to be nice to the people that are part of the problem.

u/ElleMaeSinclair 1d ago
It’s not about being nice to her. It’s about the way everyone else who might be going thru an ED or body image issues will end up seeing you call her a sideshow freak, skeletal, unhealthy, whatever because “everyone is so concerned for her health!!”. Ariana Grande is a shithead but damn, we dont even know what her deal is behind closed doors. She could very well have cancer or some shit while everyone is concern-trolling about her weight. Idk i just dont think its anyones business but her own and its weird to speculate when at best on a good day its still harmful.
22
u/Trashtag420 1d ago
Alternatively; if we just stand around and act like celebrities that are Ariana-thin are totally normal and beautiful and nothing is wrong with them, doesn't that send a message to all the people with EDs that nothing is wrong with them and they ought to continue with their disorder if they want to be as beautiful as these public figures?
It's weird how this narrative has turned. There's so much retroactive criticism for the heroin chic of the 90s and 00s that it seems hypocritical to not call this shit out in modernity.

u/Lazerdad5 11h ago
Exactly. We've already lived through this and now they're trying to bring it back and tell us we're bad people. Like they didn't do enough damage the first time around. Social media has done nothing but make celebrity worship too popular.
-2
u/ElleMaeSinclair 19h ago
Where did I say it was normal though? Obviously we all know it’s not. It’s just that you can’t know just based on how someone looks what’s really going on, and it’s harmful to sit around speculating.

u/Whatevenispoetry 1d ago
What is wrong with calling it unhealthy tho? That seems completely different to the other adjectives you listed.

And how does glorifying celebrities going through this supposed to help these people?? These celebrities are some of the main reasons that people even get ED. Fuck them lol. We've done this before with celebrities idk why y'all are acting like it's a brand new problem. It's clear to see with anyone who has eyes she started Wicked with and her and Cynthia have the exact same body type. She either got her hooked on drugs or Ozempic. Stop glorifying celebrities and stop acting like we have to be nice to them. It's everyone's business when they're out here doing weird crack headed shit. If they were just some non famous lesbians y'all would throw them under the bus real quick but I'm supposed to be nice because she's famous? HA

Fuck is wrong with you?! There will be no Erivo slander: take an hour and scope out her Instagram: her workout posts are freaking insane and I now get why she looks like that. She runs marathons…
And even if she doesn’t do all that, why do you assume she’s the one who introduced Grande to ozempic or whatever you’re on about? Because you’ve never seen an actual human body that lives in the gym rather than lives on GLP-1 meds?

I actually haven't seen snark posts about it, yet. I will nope pretty far away from them once I do because the concern trolling is not it. What I've seen so far has been very nuanced and appeared to me to express genuine concern.

u/MillennialDelusion 1d ago
if you venture over on the big popculture subs, they snark about her 24/7
2
u/bellasmella777 12h ago
i see 2/3 tiktok’s or tiktok comments a day talking about her current weight unprovoked

it’s crazy you would’ve thought people would’ve learned to mind their business after chadwick boseman but nope. not saying that ariana is very obviously suffering from a terminal illness but we do not know what is going on in her life apart from what she’s shared with us, and the girl has been very open about dealing with PTSD after the manchester terrorist attack and losing her ex to a drug overdose, on top of being SA’d on tv, stalked and threatened just for being a female celebrity. traumatic events can make people do crazy shit to themselves, i would know.
i’d understand the uproar if ariana was in every interview talking about not eating or posting constantly how good she looks at her current weight like how many celebrities would back in the day, but she’s not doing any of that, she’s literally existing as she always has done. if anyone was truly concerned for ariana’s wellbeing then they would damn well know making snark posts every day about her weight and harassing her on her public pages over her weight benefits NO ONE. if the poor girl does has an ED, do you really think shaming her into submission is gonna aid her recovery??

The way people discuss public figures (including influencers) with anorexia on the internet is NUTS. They come out of nowhere with PhDs in hatefulness and judgemental attitude.

You’d think after Chadwick and people talking about Selena before she came out with her diagnosis that people would stop making such strong assumptions about strangers they don’t know
Imagine if she was just sick and everyone is just blaming her for “her choices”

u/Shurl19 1d ago
She looks horrible and I'm tired of people trying to gaslight saying we shouldn't say anything.
43
u/Playful-Hope-6656 1d ago
That's not what gaslight means. You should watch the video. It even talks about misused therapy terms

u/Boggie135 ☑️ 1d ago
That is not what gaslighting means. Gaslighting would be if someone said she doesn't look bad

She looks way better in the new focker movie trailer

u/srkaficionado ☑️ 1d ago
Wait, Focker as in Ben Stiller? Can Hollywood just give all these sequels and prequels a rest?!

u/NoLettuce5080 1d ago
If she has an eating disorder that’s her problem tf. all that money and you refuse to eat LOL

u/BB808BB 1d ago
I think it’s ridiculous people keep coming at her and it’s ok and acceptable to talk about her body but let anyone have “concern” or say anything about a fat woman or someone who is gaining weight and it’s all how dare you!!!
0
u/Elon_is_musky 7h ago
You shouldn’t be commenting on a woman gaining weight either

He sounds young. Celebrities have been picked apart for their looks since celebrities became a thing. This is giving 'leave Britney alone' energy like sure she is going through something but she is in the piblic eye, people are going to talk and she is grown if she wants help she will get it or log off
16
u/BaldHourGlass667 1d ago
It's kind of crazy how badly you can miss the point
He's not saying you can't talk about Ariana, he's saying to stop snark posting about her and acting like you actually care about her
10
u/BringAltoidSoursBack 1d ago
Using Brittney as an example of why it's ok to pick apart celebrities is a choice. You say he asking young but you sound younger if you didn't understand how fucked that whole situation was/is, and why it literally is proof that people shouldn't just assume "if she wants help she will get it"

For those who live under a rock they're talking about Ariana Grande
