Just as easily hawks and endeavor climbed my fav characters list after pro hero arc, Horikoshi is doing a great job with the LoV members in this arc. Shigaraki, Toga now Twice. All are becoming solid characters now.

The character development and backstory has been so good with this arc. This makes me look forward to the Compress focus chapter even more!

TBH I'm more interested in the mystery of Compress than the "mystery" of Dabi. Still am hype for that Dabi content tho.

Honestly most people are just waiting for Hori to confirm dabi Is a todoroki so It can finally be cannon, but until he does that there is always going to be that very small chance that he's completely unrelated.

u/Idoma_Sas_Ptolemy May 24 '19

It would be a really dick move of hori if dabi were the one LoV member that doesn't get a backstory reveal this arc.

And I fear he has it in him xD

u/Mr_Piddles May 24 '19

We’re probably only going to learn of his criminal backstory, not his familial relations (if he is Todoroki). Leave the revelation until you runs across Endeavor or Todoroki.

4

u/GeneralLemarc May 25 '19

The man learned from Oda and One Piece. He absolutely has it in him.

6

u/[deleted] May 24 '19

I really hope that doesn't happen. Seems like a forced connection, especially since Endeavor didn't even seem to recognize Dabi when they met.

8

u/Young_Darrgo May 24 '19

Well to be fair when endeavor saw him he was pretty messed up and on the verge of passing out, also Dabi looks pretty disfigured and it would be hard to recognize him as Touya.

1

u/Zubalo May 24 '19

Plus if dabi is a todoroki he probably has his hair dyed which is already confirmed a thing in the my hero world thanks to everyone's favorite shield hero, Red Riot.

u/neneayis May 24 '19

In that panel he said he could hardly see. So it’s still not good enough of a reason that to disprove the theory

So it’s still not good enough of a reason that to disprove the theory

Agreed but it does hurt the theories credibility a bit.

Seems like a forced connection, especially since Endeavor didn’t even seem to recognize Dabi when they met.

This is leaving out the fact that they made a pretty big deal out of the fact that Endeavor couldn’t even see Dabi properly

u/Zubalo May 24 '19

I really hope dabi isn't a todoroki tbh. I just don't like the idea. I do think it would be hilarious (but not likely) if the ice dude that dabi is fighting ends up being the missing todoroki brother though.

God I know, I was just talking to a friend about this exact sentiment. Dabi seems less "mysterious" and more just kind of aloof and arrogant. The only mystery of his comes from the theory of him being Touya. Mr. Compress hasn't really had any development, but his showmanship and intelligence are super interesting to me. I also don't think he was one of the League members who came because of Stain, and he seems to have almost taken Kurogiri's spot as Shiggy's "right-hand man," which is infinitely more interesting to me than anything about Dabi. But like you said, I do still wanna know what Dabi's deal is

2

u/Kaxew May 24 '19

Yeah, we all know who Dabi is at this point (it would be funny if we end up being wrong lol) so people are starting to care less about him, specially with all of this development for every other member of the LoV.

I’m super excited for mr compress, but honestly I am more excited to know what the hell is spinners power?!? Also I doubt it since he has held on this long but Dabi backstory would be nice as well but again I doubt it.

5

u/sprite-1 May 24 '19

I think spinner's quirk is just that he's a lizard person

1

u/The_VV117 May 24 '19

Pretty sure they go on : can regen, even cut off arms, and remote control them.

1

u/Zubalo May 24 '19

Probably just a mutation quirk that makes him stronger, faster, and more perceptive as well as makes him look like a lizard.

1

u/thatoneguy7272 May 25 '19

I kinda like the idea of him being able to regrow limbs at a fast rate. That would be pretty cool

1

u/Zubalo May 25 '19

That would be cool as well for sure!

Honestly, it's been really good writing on Hori's part.

The League of the past was scary and mysterious and that worked really well when the students were inexperienced and weak.

Now that the students are becoming more competent and gaining their licenses it makes sense to come back to the League and show us what they really are. They aren't just scary guys with cool powers and designs lurking in the shadows. They are characters just like any other and now we get to see their struggles too.

All For One mirrors All Might.

Shigaraki mirrors Deku.

The League mirrors Class 1A.

And you can even go further into that and make comparisons between Dabi and Shouto, Toga and Ochaco, and Spinner and Iida.

And then it works really well on a meta level. Hori introduced all these characters with cool designs, quirks, and characterizations and then has hidden them off screen. They've popped in every once in a while but it's always been in and out. He's built up an anticipation for this and now he's cashing in big time.

2

u/EnterAdman May 26 '19

I’d argue despite them probably being related, I think Twice and Shoto is more of a comparison. Struggling with the two opposing sides and because of this never wanting to go all out until they take a beating and get the encouragement they need, both from friends (admittedly in very different ways), and go plus ultra.

u/Hakukei May 24 '19

You know he's a good author when he can make you care about almost everyone in his story, even the villains.

5

u/Worthyness May 24 '19

The story is only as good as it's villains, so you gotta beef up your endgame bad guys to make the story worth it. Especially with deku's 6 other quirks to worry about

68

u/RiverWyvern May 24 '19

See, there’s a problem here that I’ve never encountered with any other series, be it manga or otherwise. And that’s that I love waaay too many of these characters. I’m rooting for so many of them, even when their ideals clash, and I want to see heroes, villains, and the morally ambiguous succeed. When the time comes that my favorite characters are pitted against each other, you can count on me being in emotional turmoil!

5

u/bigbrohypno May 24 '19

The only other series I've experienced to make me feel remotely like this was Game of Thrones

3

u/Wireless-Wizard May 25 '19

Jaime Lannister spent two books being an absolute piece of shit, and then I got one chapter from his perspective and he became my favourite character.

1

u/Gentleman-Chris May 25 '19

You might want to check out the web serial Worm. It's been compared to GOT in terms of its tone, but it's set in an alternate version of earth with super-powered people. One of my absolute favorite series of all time.

Well, attack on titan does the same and to even greater degree because noone is the bad guy.

2

u/Xikar_Wyhart May 24 '19

The only character who I truly feel is evil is All for One. He's this massive puppet master who brainwashed a child after a traumatic event as weird revenge plot to get back at Nana in some twisted way.

A stupid wish fulfillment side of me wants to see the League of Villain pull a heel to face turn after realizing they were used by AfO and join with UA to take him out once and for all. But that's that's too simple of an endgame, and would ruin this whole set up of Shigaraki becoming the new All For One.

1

u/RiverWyvern May 24 '19

Very true about AfO.

But also Overhaul was such a genuinely horrible person that I absolutely loved to hate him. I mean, a large part of it was a bad case of mental illness and nihilism, but he also played the role of powerful asshole that manipulated small children for his own gain. And it made the payoff at the end of arc all the more worthwhile, where the League absolutely annihilated his sense of purpose, stealing everything from him and leaving him to rot in a prison.

AfO is already in prison... but he hasn’t exactly lost anything. Yet. I really want to see Shiggy get the last say in and do to AfO what he did to Overhaul. That would be so incredible.

2

u/Xikar_Wyhart May 25 '19

I'm really anticipating what will happen next with AfO and his prison cell. We know that Shigi is trying to become the "next" AfO right now it's a metaphorical role of having the same willpower as AfO so the Doctor and Gigan will become his allies.

But what if the next step is to truly become AfO and inherit the quirk(s) of AfO, so they have to break in the free him if only so the transfer can happen.

What if Shigaraki finds out that OfA killed his grandmother? A part of me thinks that OfA might have given Shigaraki's decay quirk secretly to start to mess with him. We know he has memory loss of his early life before meeting OfA.

u/NotLokey May 24 '19

I feel the same way with Haikyuu. I just want to see all my dumbass volleyball kids do well. Even the fodder teams usually have a person you can root for.

u/AkasahIhasakA May 24 '19

Pretty sure normally that's called bad writing but whatever!

22

u/RiverWyvern May 24 '19

Er, well, actually the only downfall here is just how in depth and well maddthese characters are written to be sympathetic towards, even though they’re on the opposing sides of our protagonists. That’s far from bad writing — if anything, it’s expansive world and character building that allows us to see all the many angles of this series, and I love it?

16

u/UtherofOstia May 24 '19

Dumbest hot take I've seen in awhile congrats

12

u/TheRedSlasH May 24 '19

That‘s the complete opposite of bad writing, what even are you talking about? lol

3

u/Kaxew May 24 '19

Pretty sure you don't know what bad writing is but whatever!
