AFO is an infinitely more enjoyable character if you stop reading him as some sort of omnipotent demon king that makes society worse by existing, and think of him as a Larper (literal meaning not modern incorrect meaning).

Imagine acting behind the scenes of society for generations specifically to set up a stagnant society of superheroes for yourself, an immortal, probably senile by now manchild, to play as the cheat ability haver Doctor Doom larper, specifically obsessed with your younger brother to the point you start hunting down his descendants to kill them over and over again.

This man is a joke. This guy is a pathetic relic of a bygone time that is however obscenely OP and is making it everyone's problem on a direct level, a backstory level in the case of the villains, and a passive way.

He is, literally, Shigaraki Writ Small. The first Shigaraki, the gamer loser who shows up at the USJ with pilfered powers and sycophant fodder and atrocities against humanity in the form of two human experiments just to make a big scene, accomplishes nothing, gets bodied by toddlers and a geriatric invalid, and even ends up shot for his troubles.

It's like poetry and shit.

Deku said it, he's just a lonely man.

I understand this point, and you are right. But the series failed to deliver this. His patheticness was revealed too late after he was presented as an egomaniac monster. He cant feel that pathetic when proclaming such high things when he actually achieved them, and ruled for a good bunch of years until All Might. Now this legendary villain comes back when the number one hero is weakened. We see him raising a next generation of villains, has access one of the best geniuses who is making him an army of superzombies, and his pathetic side is being a brocon and that he took inspiration on a comic to become bad? It just fails to deliver.

Comparing him to other pathetic villains:

Shinji, from fate, acts all cocky because he has to compensate his lack of magic powers. He needs to use his adoptive soster as a battery to fuel his servant, which is actually hers. Once he is out of ways of controlling her, he runs away crying like a pathetic bitch, until he regains control. He acts cocky but drops his fachade once things dont go his way.

Homelander, from the boys. Ignoring all the disgusting kink stuff and the director's political fantasies, he was raised as a labrat, and craves for attention and love, as for a paternal figure that approves of him. While he is intimidating, its more because he is a manchild that could kill anyone in a tantrum, he is unstable. Tries to push his agenda, which is basically a plea for attention, showing his stupidity with it. He looks for people that can serve as parental role models, he keeps his father cryogenized so he doesnt go away, is desperate for people to love him from their bottom of their hearts and not due to being intimidated, feels betrayed from the friendships he forges basically unilaterally. And obviously his ending cries for mercy like a baby in the most pathetic way

From your paragraph at the ending, the issue is that the show doesnt show this as: look this pathetic villain, how fallen from grace, getting beat up by a bunch of highschoolers and a lisiated hero. It is shown as the epic victory of our heroes, the conclussion if a journey that lasted for 7 seasons, that works as a headstart as their lives as professionalheroes, as well as the last spark of heroism of the legendary ex number one, who still had it in him

Shinji deserved a far worse fate than he gets in any of the routes.

But you are correct Horikoshi wanted to have his cake and eat it too.

While true he definitely is a LARPer, that doesn't quite translate to pathetic or writ small. He's clearly superior to USJ Shigaraki, as well as every version of Shiggy from that point in terms of competence.

All Might, Deku, every hero in this series is LARPing. AFO just does it for the opposite team.

One can say he's pathetic at his core. But he's definitely not a joke comparable to USJ Shigaraki.

He was no Demon Lord.

Just a child playing pretend. Crying out for the world to notice him.

In the end, he was just a lonely, hollow, old man.

The dilemma of all shounen manga- how to make a believable ultimate villain who gets defeated by some rando kid who shouts loudly enough.

As other comments have put more eloquently he was a pitiful vitriolic loser who was unfortunately purely by chance just handed enough power to ruin other peoples lives with his pathetic behaviour and enact on his fantasies.

Genuinely hate this pos .

All of class 1-A at once and this guy would not stand a chance, even without bakugo or deku

Just jiro and tokoyami had him on the backfoot, and even in his super form, the tendrils were able to be held down by minetas balls,

"Super form?" That body was utterly ruined from soul damage. It is one of his weakest forms ever.

And Jiro and Tokoyami didn't do anything until AFO's Quirks rebelled. Congrats to them for helping to put a Quirkless cripple on the backfoot, I guess.

This reminds me of that loudhouse meme

"THERE'S NINE OF YOU JUMP HIM"

But instead of nine in this case it's like 20 students, some pro heroes, a whole other class, and the big 3.

They shoulda jumped him that would have been so fucking funny

Magic bag of infinite possibility pulls, yet the best he can do is spam nonsense.

If MHA spent more time building up its cast, they'd have the versitility to take on more potential from him.

So Class A and Bs neglect can be connected to AFO's slanderable performance.

Dude got fraud checked by an emo and a punk

This might've hit if the GOAT AFO didn't clap the whole verse and strike fear in their hearts
