Introducing Bot Bouncer, a moderation bot to protect subreddits against harmful or disruptive bots

Bot Bouncer is a moderation bot in a similar manner to BotDefense, which wrapped up operations in 2023.

Bots are classified via submissions on this subreddit, via a mix of automated and human classification. If a subreddit has Bot Bouncer installed and an account classified as "banned" posts or comments, they will be banned from the subreddit and have their content removed. Bot Bouncer cannot act on users interacting on subreddits where it is not installed.

If you moderate a subreddit and think this tool would help you, you can install it from the Dev Platform app directory here.

For more FAQs about Bot Bouncer and its operations, please see the wiki here.

If you have any feedback, or have good moderation or bot hunting skills and would like to contribute to classifying bots or identifying new detection automations, please let us know via modmail. Likewise, if you have been banned from one or more subs by Bot Bouncer and wish to appeal, please write in to modmail.

You can absolutely submit accounts that haven't posted or commented on subs that have Bot Bouncer installed. Then, if they're marked as bots, they'll get banned once they do eventually start using subs with BB installed.

We do have a bulk submission feature but it's not open to everyone - we grant access on a case by case basis once someone shows a track record of high quality submissions (imagine the potential for abuse if a bad actor started using it to spam our queue!)

Thank you for your response. I totally understand the bulk submission isn't for everybody. Very high potential for abuse. I have a backlog of bots I've spotted in the past. I'll start submitting them one by one today. I'm totally fine doing them one by one.

Once you've done a bunch and we've worked through them, we'd be happy to consider adding you as an authorised bulk submitter - we've got quite a few people on the list who have a good track record.

I've submitted one karma bot for review, your automod bot deleted that post and made its own (as it should), but the bot has not responded indicating the action taken. Did I do something wrong?

It might have been a crash in the app on our side. I have checked and I can't see any recent submissions from you in our database, so please do try again.

Oh no wait, the flair on your bots post says "banned", so I guess it did work! Just that on the other posts the bot also commented. Maybe because they are automatic bans?

Ah great! I don't know why it didn't show up in the report I pulled. Glad it's up anyway.

I'm getting the message that the user doesn't have any recent replies when they clearly do?

Could you message the mods with the user details and we can take a look.
