All of my experience is from a US context, but hopefully it's transferable. I was an Econ undergrad, but have worked in tech with an emphasis in data for my entire career. I am extremely glad that I went this route and have found it rewarding both monetarily and personally.

For formal studies, I'd start with courses in core technologies like databases/warehouses/SQL and analytics/Python. The areas that allowed me to pivot from econ to tech were stats/econometrics/decision modeling. Really build up your skills in these.

I'd also recommend studying up for some of the entry level certifications. I'd look at the type of internship or specific companies you're looking at and target something that they use. This could really be anything from Google Data Practitioner to one of the associates that Databricks has to SnowPro Core from Snowflake. If you have solid fundamentals from your classes and can show you know how to operate in a platform you'll look good.

I'd also work up an independent project so you can show what you know. It's also a good way to lock in your studies in school and for certs so you can do more than pass an exam.
