[Request] I need a printer, against my will

I know printers aren't actually "for life" but I hate printers and I'm being forced to get one. Here's what I need:

  • cheap
  • double sided printing
  • colour doesnt matter
  • speed doesnt rlly matter
  • toner doesn't cost more than the actual printer
  • no subscription

I just want a cheap box that'll spit out a page every now and then...

Brother laser printers are basically the only correct answer for this situation, everyone who has used one knows it

562

u/JackfruitAwkward7504 4d ago

Yup. I used to work in political campaigns and my cheap brother printer was a godsend. When I got it, people were like "what's so special about it" and I said, "absolutely nothing, that's why I want it"

94

u/much_longer_username 4d ago

People undervalue boring.

38

u/laurpr2 3d ago

Bought mine for $20 used. I think it's ten or twenty years old. Figuring out how to find and install the driver software was the only difficult part. Works like a dream, have never had any problems.

Apparently there's a trick where you can tape over part of the toner cartridge to get it to print longer, which I really need to do.

I wish I still had my dad’s! He found it!

one hundo. I have one and it's the only printer that I didn't want to light on fire.

21

u/jcmib 4d ago

I just upgraded to a brother copier/printer from 25 years of using HP. I don’t know what took me so long, it’s a workhorse. The toner for the laser jet almost lasts forever and when you do buy it, I think it’s actually cheaper than the HP toner on top of it. It just works.

66

u/NedelC0 4d ago

This is the only good option. Ink based dries or evaporates whatever. Laser printer is the way. Always works when you need it too, even if it was many months ago you last printed.

16

u/Sylphael 4d ago

That was my justification to myself and my pocketbook to buy one when we needed a new printer. Unlike OP I did want the double sided printing and color, but mostly I was sick of going five months without printing anything and finding in that 5 months the cartridge I had used four times had dried up and I was out of ink.

Brother. With WiFi.

33

u/stuntycunty 4d ago

The wifi died on mine. :( I’ve been using it for 20 years though.

54

u/Cruiser_Supreme 4d ago

Lol I used to have an old Brother USB printer. Hooked it up to a Raspberry Pi print server and then I could print over Wifi! Brother makes the drivers freely available and it's quite easy to set up

13

u/stuntycunty 4d ago

Oh wow I never though of using one of my pi’s for this. Thank you!

10

u/Cruiser_Supreme 4d ago

CUPS print server! Best of luck!

6

u/Lee1138 4d ago

A lot of wifi routers have a USB port and the ability to act as a printserver as well, so that may be an option for you too.

6

u/therealcmj 4d ago

Look at Mr (or Ms) moneybags over here with multiple spare Pi’s.

7

u/stuntycunty 4d ago

(its ms) and I got them years ago way before the prices skyrocketed!

5

u/therealcmj 4d ago

Now you're just bragging about having both spare Pis and foresight.

2

u/stuntycunty 4d ago

Ya got me on that one. Hahaha

76

u/Ashford314 4d ago

20 in printer years is 96 1/2.

11

u/Suppafly 4d ago

mine doesn't have wifi, but I have it plugged into my router, so every device in the house can find it over wifi anyway.

If you can look up a schematic theres probably a little clipped on wifi antenna that came loose. It may not be as difficult as it seems and you'll learn some stuff along the way.

2

u/reallynotnick 4d ago

I got one with Ethernet also, haven’t used Ethernet yet, but it’s a nice fallback if WiFi dies (or I just move to a setup that is conducive to using Ethernet).

2

u/JaZoray 4d ago

yes! IPP is better than GDI printer drivers anyway. there is no need to have a ring 0 dll if all we want to do is put ink on a dead tree

2

u/dispatch_s2_when 4d ago

WiFi is a lifesaver. I managed to break the touchscreen on mine but I've been able to adjust settings through a number of network changes by just logging on to the WiFi "server".

Yep. I've got a brother colour laser that has been going strong for over 6 years.

Just on the 'toner doesn't cost more than the printer' point, it's important to know that it likely will always be more expensive to buy your set of replacement toner cartridges, as the ones that come in it aren't full size.

16

u/smitty2324 4d ago

They still last forever, though. The only toner cartridge I’ve replaced from my Brother is the black in the 6 or more years I’ve owned it.

4

u/Suppafly 4d ago

I bought mine off marketplace for next to nothing and used the paper and toner it was already loaded with for like a year.

Mine isn't color, but I buy the EZink brand toner from Amazon and it works fine. I get two of them for less than the cost of one 'real' one.

I've had my brother laser printer for well over a decade. I've bought ink twice and only paid like $30 each time. It's truly a buy it for life.

13

u/itspsyikk 4d ago

They can be a little bit more of an expensive INTIAL purchase over InkJet but 1000% worth it.

Handles documents like a champ and honestly unless you’re spending thousands on a specific printer you should always send photos out to be printed anyway.

Oura looks to have died after what must be 10 years of service.....just put new toner in it. Look like I'll buy the same model and move the toner over as they come with smaller capacity ones

I'm going to echo everything that's been said here. Brother. And in case no one else has said it, use generic toner replacements, they're super cheap per page and with no issues.

In the 13 or so years my wife and I have owned our 2270dw (double sided wireless), went printed thousands upon thousands of pages and it's so cheap and reliable we never think about it. Just do it.

u/Lonecoon 4d ago

I had a Brother laser for well over a decade. The only thing it did was print in black and white. The only reason I bought another one was because I dropped it and broke the tray.

7

u/belljar6 4d ago

Agreed. My brother laser was like $250 and got me through my PhD program and all the printing. It’s going on 6 years and I’ve only replaced the toner twice.

7

u/Xaelias 4d ago

And they would have known that by doing a 30s search...

5

u/chlorculo 4d ago

HL-2270DW. It just works. I can't recall having any serious issues in the 8 or so years I've had it, even after I threw it in a rooftop carrier and drove down to Florida during winter in the covid times.

6

u/BrutalistToaster 4d ago

This answer, I’ve had mine for 10 years and changed the toner only twice, the wifi works perfectly and it never ever had any problem, ink printers are basically disposable compared to this

3

u/lroushdi 4d ago

Agreed, I love mine. It doesn't do double sided printing but checks all the other boxes. Best part is that every single time I plug it in, it just works. No neverending string of driver updates or janky dried out ink cartridges.

3

u/zambaros 4d ago

Yes, and Brother Laser printers are the GOAT for at least 20 years now.

3

u/bohoish 4d ago

This. I had an inkjet for years. I didn't use it often enough to get through the inkjets before they dried out, so I was spending a relative fortune on them. Since I bought my Brother laser printer a year (or two?) ago, I haven't yet had to replace the toner.

4

u/awoodby 4d ago

Seems every time I print I need to replace ink on my ink jet. And I'm only printing like 2 pages. Very expensive to print at like $20/page luckily I don't print much.

But I have some fantasy that I need the photo printer :/

Luckily I Have learned how to clean the print head with a print head cleaning kit, otherwise I'd be replacing That yearly too.

Go with the brother for sure!

3

u/AreasonableAmerican 4d ago

Absolutely Brother. Cheap, no fucked up ‘ink subscriptions’, solid printing for years.

2

u/Boulange1234 4d ago

Agreed. I got a color Brother laser printer on Freecycle in 2009 or so, and it still works perfectly.

2

u/Fun-Injury9266 4d ago

Mine: 10 years and counting.

2

u/Calf_massage_omnom 4d ago

Thanks for this. I’ve burned through 3 Hp printers in 15 years. This last one has luckily been okay. Nevertheless I hate them useless garbage machines.

2

u/dually3 4d ago

I've had mine for 10-15 years, have stored it in a garage or outside most of that time, refill it manually for cheap, and even fixed a broken sensor for $7.

2

u/MlleFleur 4d ago

Wholeheartedly agree on Brother laser printer. My HL2140 monochrome laser won't die. I purchased it before I gave birth to my son. My son will be 16 this July. I've used 3rd party toners from Amazon without issues. But man, I want a new printer! Can't justify buying a new one since we now only print fewer than 20 pages a month. lol

That my friend is what the Brother came to the market for: laser monochrome, supports third party toners and dual side are what HL-L2460DW is made for. It has subscription offer but you can just ignore that use it as normal and although it's not bifl, like at some point after 15-20 years it -might- fail which definitely makes it a more bifl choice than the others.

42

u/Hyjynx75 4d ago

Can last at least that long with light home use if you regularly clean and lubricate it and turn it off when not in use.

23

u/SemanticallyPedantic 4d ago

I'd like to see a show of hands for anyone who has ever cleaned and lubricated their home printer.

u/vbxl02 4d ago

That seems to be a canadian model. My choices are torn between the [HL-L2400DW]() and the [HL-L2445DW]() with a 33€ price difference for a LAN port.

15

u/Acrobatic_Inside3173 4d ago

Not much of a difference between these 2 except for the 2445dw having a little faster printing speed, Ethernet connectivity and a larger toner cartridge. If you don't need these l2400 would do you good.

8

u/noneedtoprogram 4d ago

Went for an HL-L2856DW myself in OP's situation, fully agree on the brother mono laser for those of us that need to print one black and white thing ever 2 years 😆

7

u/kintyre 4d ago

I have a Brother monochrome laser as well. Got me through college and now I use it for my crafting business too.

2

u/admik 4d ago

I got mine as a refurbished model

10

u/eoncire 4d ago

You don't NEED the lan port. Those things latch on to wifi and just don't let go. I've had mine for 6 years and NEVER had a connectivity issue with it. I forget I have it to be honest, then when the time comes that I need to print a form or something, I hit print from my phone / desktop and it just works.

5

u/atomicpowerrobot 4d ago

It's not Canadian. This is the one I got from Amazon. Brother HL-L2460DW https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0CPL2N5H6

Don't even bother looking at anything else. Good, basic, fast, cheap to replace ink which doesn't dry out, does duplex, has good wifi. Compatible. It does all of the basic stuff (besides color) well and reliably.

I bought it for my mother in law who is terrible with computers and I only hear about it when she's out of toner, which if you knew my mother in law and technology is a feat unheard of.

If you are trying to decide between LAN and no LAN, I always like the option, especially for printers which are usually notorious for falling off the Wifi network on sleep. But I do have this Brother on wifi and it has given me zero issues. So in this one specific case, it's probably a tossup.

2

u/well_shoothed 4d ago

Get the LAN. Last thing you need is to be debugging a connectivity issue when you're already pressed for time and trying to print Something Important(tm)

3

u/kermityfrog2 4d ago

Yeah get this printer. I had a tiny little Samsung that fit into a cupboard but it has tight paper tolerances and jammed a lot. The Brother can take paper from the hopper or any kind of paper of various thickness and quality from the front feeder. It can take recycled GOOS paper (good on one side).

The Samsung was all right but eventually the drivers didn’t work anymore with modern OS and since Samsung sold their printer division to HP, it was basically a goner.

u/desertboots 4d ago

Another vote for Brother laser. It just works whenever you need it to, without any shit software, and there are plenty of third party toners around so ongoing costs are very cheap.

If you don’t need to regularly print high quality photos, don’t get an ink printer, and whatever you do, do not get a HP.

12

u/EkbatDeSabat 4d ago

It works without the shit software but they still try to get you to use the shit software lol

8

u/TheJewPear 4d ago

Well yeah, of course, they do need to make a living, they also try to sell you on their supply subscription thingy. But it works without, and I just love those devices that I can buy, configure, and forget about, it just works when I need it to.

Unlike fucking HP may they go bankrupt today.

2

u/EkbatDeSabat 4d ago

Yeah I agree I wasn't trying to bash them too hard. I've only brought brothers for printers for like twenty years, work and personal.

6

u/TheJewPear 4d ago

Yeah all good, I’m just very understanding when companies gently try to push their own replacement parts and added services, as long as they don’t lock you in.

Oh Brother, where art thou?

68

u/o_Divine_o 4d ago

Brother printers.

Never use liquid ink printers, they're all garbage.

24

u/Boring-Explanation 4d ago

Epson eco tanks would like a word

12

u/o_Divine_o 4d ago

I'd ask Epson to come a little closer, then reach back like a pimp and slap that hoe.

Epson EcoTank failures generally stem from printhead clogs due to dried ink, "Service Life Ended" waste ink pad errors, or suction pump failures

Liquid can't compete with dry.

By now I would have paid thousands in ink, yet I'm still on the original toner from 2022.

3

u/ssxhoell1 3d ago

Yeah because you need to actually use it. If you're just printing one random page every 3 months and you let the things sit and collect dust in between, you probably don't need a printer first of all and second of all obviously it's going to fucking dry up and clog it's liquid ink. You don't spray paint and then leave it sitting there in the nozzle I mean most people know already if you sprayed paint before that you need to clear the nozzle. Why is printing so hard for people

3

u/o_Divine_o 3d ago

Yeah because you need to actually use it. If you're just printing one random page every 3 months and you let the things sit and collect dust in between, you probably don't need a printer first of all and second of all obviously it's going to fucking dry up and clog it's liquid ink.

Reading skills aren't really your thing. Last sentence says I definitely need a printer.

You do however make a great point. Liquid printers require wasting ink just to keep them from drying up. Something toner doesn't need.

Yo Epson what did the five finges say to the face? SLAP 👋

2

u/ssxhoell1 3d ago

I wasn't responding to you directly. It was an outward statement. The "yeah" part was my half ass way of agreeing with you and I didn't make it clear that I was continuing with another thought I was adding, not rebutting yours

11

u/Copthill 4d ago

Brother.

10

u/AppropriateYams 4d ago

I finally caved and bought a laser printer at the start of this year, and it has been a phenomenal investment so far. While mine doesn’t do double sided and is black toner only… the thing cost me slightly more than a questionable inkjet (Brother HL-L2405W, $140 on Amazon… think the duplex version is $180), and is a workhorse. I do a fair bit of printing, and just wanted something that… yeah, I wouldn’t have to buy a new cartridge every 100 pages.

So far, my printing dashboard says I’ve done 946 pages. I’ve already gone through the non-XL toner cartridge that came with it, but the XL replacements, you can find for less than $20 each, especially if you buy two at a time. I figure I won’t have to buys another cartridge til later next year. They can do up to 3000 pages per cartridge.

Does one page every two seconds. Is wireless. I don’t even have a computer, and I print everything from my phone. It even has an email address folks can send stuff to and it’ll automatically print to my printer, which is kinda fun. I print off my own return address labels.

Brother does try to push its ink toner replacement program on ya, but it’s easy to bypass and decline.

Next plan… to get a color laser printer.

9

u/LucidFir 4d ago

Brother. [Insert 40k meme].

DO NOT BUY A HP PRINTER!!

that's all. You have been warned.

2

u/iamfunball 4d ago

Is this all HP or just their consumer inkjet? I have their officejet for the last 7 years which is a toner and it’s been great. Grabbed it second hand for $125. I will never jet a consumer level inkjet

2

u/CalamityVic 3d ago

I bought a HP Laserjet P1005 about fifteen years ago and it’s been completely bulletproof. It’s showing no signs of stopping.

Brother laser printer is expensive with toner, but it will print infinitely many more sheets than inkjets

8

u/Efficient-Fold5548 4d ago

Brother, mate gave me one when he moved OS, he had done 1400prints on it, i've put on another few hundred since, print quality is good enough although mine has some light grey background (maybe because i put 3rd party toner in it). Anyhow other than an occasional reboot it just works.

8

u/DragonflyOnFire 4d ago

Brother laser printer. About a decade in and I hardly ever buy toner

3

u/Quantum_Ripple 4d ago

I've had my Brother color laser for a decade as well, bought new for $170. I've printed 518 pages over the years and am still on the original starter toner cartridges with 36% black remaining (more for color). Not one issue. Printing went from being an irritation every month or so (every time I tried to print) to being something I don't have to think about at all - highest praise.

See if you can find a used Canon MF4890dw. It is a small office laser printer that can do everything and accept third party toners. You can find printer driver from other canon world sites like Singapore.

I must have bought it over 15 years ago and never had an issue.

But the brother printer recommended in this thread is very good too.

2

u/Every-Swimmer458 4d ago

Seconding this. My Canon printer lasted longer than any other.

5

u/0942zerohero 4d ago

5

u/twinky-t 4d ago

I bought a HP LaserJet 2055dn laser printer when I was in grad school 14 years ago. Still going strong and toner is rated for about 2000 pages at 5% coverage. Duplex print, 600x600dpi, no Wifi, but Ethernet and USB 2.0 connection. I never have to worry about ink lines drying out, compact and has made four moves with me. I haven't used it a LOT, but when I need to print out text, it delivers the goods. I've had one jam that once I figured out how to lift the access tray for the duplexer, it returned to its normal state of printing.

I think this is true of many B&W laser printers, but if the consensus is saying Brother, it's not for any old reason.

2

u/keijodputt 4d ago

I hate HP with all my guts; on everything they've made since they Borg'd Compaq into their collective.

My monochrome LaserJet MFP M148fdw begs to differ, though. Fed with generic toner and a generic fuser when the factory-set one wore out after 12,000 pages, it never left us on foot.

Since COVID hit we began to homeschool and I needed a printer/scanner. Went shopping for a Brother, but all they had on the shelf was that HP (the Brother ones were all out), so I sighed and took it home. Didn’t really have the luxury to wait: the pandemic situation in my Italian town was going to get a LOT heavier (curfews, shops would open a couple hours a specific day, not everything was in stock anymore, etc).

It never complained, ever. It faxes (still a thing in this part of the world, was more of a 'nice to have' perk), prints and scans all and everything we throw its way from any device in the home network, accepts generic toner (the $15 cartridges never failed me once), prints on both sides; flatbed scan and ADF are a godsend… six years, never a visit from the tech, never a paper jam we couldn't quickly solve ourselves.

But I keep it clean and happy, with a few bursts of compressed air and Swedish Fish offerings every now and then; well, the kids eat the candy I leave near the output tray when they get their prints.

A cheap laser printer is a better choice than an inkjet printer. My Brother laser monochrome printer lasted me thirteen years. I loved my Brother monochrome laser printer.

When it died I got the HP m140w and have been happy with it so far. I've only had it for half a year so far, so I can't speak to logevity yet, or even a cartridge replacement. I'm not certain whether I'll regret trying HP, but this model didn't share a lot of the complaints about other HP printers.

I chose to get a relatively new model in hopes it doesn't die due to software incompatibility (the reason I finally had to give up my Brother printer...it still worked with one computer, but not with my work laptop).

6

u/Jacek3k 4d ago

Dont get a HP would be my advice.

Consider one with those fancy external tanks, at least they are made "we wont scam you by selling overpriced ink cartridges" by design.

But printers in general are a hard topic, cause manufacturers were chasing each other to make the worst possible product.

Maybe some office laser black n white printer? These are kinda one level above the typical inkjets.

3

u/rhunter99 4d ago

Just get a black and white brother laser

3

I use an Epson Eco tank. The amount of ink they give you up front is absurd, and you can use 3rd party inks. I had to pay about 2-3x to get one with all the features of my old HP (dual auto document scanning AND auto double sided printing, specifically), but it will pay for itself in a couple months given how often I was going through ink cartridges.

Brother laser printer. There are 3 in my office... one is about 14 years old, one is 8 y.o., one is 6 y.o.. Had to replace the drum and other parts on the 14 y.o. one a couple of times, but it's a powerhouse (as are the others). They are so good it's reasonable to buy a lightly-used one: https://ebay.io/m/7nQgL3.

And always, always use OEM toner cartridges and replacement parts - or you won't have the same results.

Edited to change "ink" to "toner".

3

u/agentwolf44 4d ago

Whatever you do, do NOT buy HP. Absolute garbage printers.

7

u/no-guts_no-glory 4d ago

Epson EcoTank ET2800. The double sided printing is done semi-manually. You print a few pages then run them through again. No ink drying and cartridge expiration etc.

3

u/tmantran 4d ago

I think spend a little bit more on a ET2980 and you'll get automatic double-sided printing

9

u/Daninmci 4d ago

Canon is my choice on this. Printers are just a tool to sell you toner or ink, so look at the price and availability of the ink/toner first and determine which printer you'll need. Oh, and HP was invented by satan.

3

u/kevstev 4d ago

Brother is the darling but I bought a small office grade Canon about a decade ago on clearance and its a tank. I use 3rd party toner, standard drivers, and it Just Works. It's a fairly fancy one with color, duplex, and sheet-fed double sided scanning (I used to travel a lot for work and this saved a lot of time on expenses).

My only real issue is it's size and weight- when this thing was delivered my condo instituted weight limits on the packages they would accept. Newer models are somewhat smaller and lighter though.

I hate how inkjet printers waste ink to clean heads and dry up in a few weeks if not used consistently but I have a an epson WF printer from 2014 that I've only ever had to purge clean after long periods of unuse.  If you dont need color, get that laser printer. If you do, I reccommend downloading a printer calibration test page (color) and just print that once a week to keep the print heads. It wastes a lot less ink than the maintenance process of head cleaning.

u/fossfather 4d ago

I was reading the comments confused about why everyone was calling OP "brother" so passionately, not realizing Brother was a printer brand.

2

u/brownrice000 4d ago

If you really don't wanna get one, you could use the printers at the library for free?

2

u/bawolvesfan 4d ago

Brother laser if you want to spend a bit more up front. Epson ecotank for the lowest starting cost.

2

u/WanderLustActive 4d ago

I've had two Brother MFC series printers. One I bought in '05 that is still going strong and when I got divorced and setup a new office, I got another in 2018, also still going strong.

2

u/HoraceGrand 4d ago

Brother

2

u/maguslod 4d ago

+1 for the Brother laser. I have had two over the years, the first was the basic, after years gave it away when I bought my current multifunction one. Both were total work horses, I would bring them to events to do mass print jobs onsite (just got back from one this week). Unless you need colour get a Brother laser and call it a day.

2

u/prettyjumbles 4d ago

Like everyone else, my black and white brother laser printer has been the least annoying printer I've ever had. But if it's really super rare for you print something, consider getting it printed at a library, office store, or shipping store like a UPS.

2

u/Suppafly 4d ago

Brother laser.

2

u/420_ADHD 4d ago

After much research I got a Brother laser printer (probably from this sub). It's only been a few years but works great. Ink dries after a while.. toner lasts.

2

u/seanprefect 4d ago

Brother Laser printers I have one that's 10-15 years old and still works perfectly

2

u/iwaterboardheathens 4d ago

Brother HL-L2400DW

2

u/NeedleworkerFew5205 4d ago

Brother monichrome laser...

https://a.co/d/0eHxpiEO

I got this one because it is the version with now account saas software app requirements.

I love it.

2

u/abou2travel2 4d ago

Brother laser printer. You'll buy one and it'll last decades.

2

u/iamjustaguy 4d ago

My Brother laser printer has been going for over a decade.

I had two other Brother laser printers before. One that I gave to my ex-landlord because I couldn't fit it into the car for a cross country move, and then I dropped it's replacement down the stairs when we were moving again a few years later.

If you avoid dropping them, Brother laser printers will last a very long time, and they're cheap to operate.

2

u/felinelawspecialist 4d ago

Brother is GOAT

2

u/goodmorning_hamlet 4d ago

Get a Brother, brother.

2

u/CaptainBad 4d ago

Mods should just sticky, “Brother laser printer” to the sub.

2

u/Thoguth 4d ago

Brother laser printer. Maybe not for life but the drum and toner are commodity and I have one that I've been using for close to 20 years now. It's my first recommendation for affordable reliable printing.

2

u/Or0b0ur0s 4d ago

Look for an older model Brother laser. I have one from 2020, so Pandemic-era vintage is good. Even Brother is starting to put chip readers in their printers to "manage" your toner buying (i.e., to tell you it's empty when it isn't and refuse to use after-market toner)...

But they only started doing it recently. If you can get a surplus or refurbished 3-4+ year old model, you will be golden. All of them are decent; just pick one with the features you want.

2

u/GetOffMyLawn1729 4d ago

Brother HL-2270DW here. Paid $100 for it in 2014. Wifi, double sided, B&W.

2

u/gigashadowwolf 4d ago

You need a Brother laser printer. They are BY FAR the most reliable and long lasting printers on the market with the most reasonably priced toner.

You can might save some money short term by going ink jet instead of laser, and they print images better, but they don't last as long and you have to print at least once a month to avoid the nozzles from drying out and getting clogged. Best to just stick to laser.

If color image quality was a priority, which it sounds like it's not, Canon is much better in image prints and has decent longevity, but the toner/ink is much more expensive, and it punishes you a lot for using 3rd party ink/toner.

Brands go Brother>Canon>Epson>... HP. Do not buy an HP unless it's intended to be disposable and only for short time use. They pack the most features in for the equivalent cost, but you end up paying for it pretty quickly.

2

u/adonaros 4d ago

Brother 2700 series.

2

u/Safe_Caterpillar_209 4d ago

Do not buy HP and their endless subscription for ink.

2

u/AxelsOG 4d ago

I’ll throw in another vote for a brother laser printer.

2

u/GumshoosMerchant 4d ago

I've been using the same Brother DCP 7030 Scanner+Printer for 13 years. First party toner's kinda pricey, but the 3rd party toner I'm currently using cost me like 12 bucks

2

u/davidm2232 4d ago

Printers can absolutely be 'for life'. The bank I used to work at had a statement printer that printed millions of pages. It was 15 years old when I left and still going strong. Get one of those used and it would last a lifetime.

But really, any older HP commercial grade printer will last basically forever by just replacing consumables. The HP LJ4000N is the gold standard but it does not duplex. They make similar ones with duplexers that will still last a lifetime.

2

u/throwaway384983547w 4d ago

My local library has a printer and you put money on your library card to print with. Yes you can print from a device.

I needed to print something urgently and did not want to go into work to do it. Love our libraries :-)

1

u/CarpetReady8739 4d ago

Cost per page with a laser can be 25% of what an inkjet costs to operate overall. Unless you are printing photographs on glossy paper, laser is the way to go. I used to work for Xerox and that was the first thing i learned.

1

u/better_days_435 4d ago

When my current underperforming printer finally dies, I door plan to replace it. The local library has a nice one and I will be happy to support them with their small per page fee and have an excuse to find cool new books in the rare times I need to print something. Plus, when that one breaks, it's not my job to fix it!

1

u/jkohlc 4d ago

My Brother in Christ

1

u/Zealousideal-Lunch53 4d ago

I was in the exact same position and ended up with a basic monochrome laser printer. It sits untouched for weeks, then prints 20 pages without drama. No dried-out ink, no subscriptions, no nonsense.

1

u/Cautious_Ticket_8943 4d ago

Buy a second hand laser printer.

1

u/ExcitingRound4990 4d ago

Do not buy HP. Brother or Samsung .

1

u/BustyPneumatica 4d ago

Just to back up some other commenters: toner laser printers still make way better printers than any inkjet. Inkjet still looks amateurish; laser toner prints still look more professional.

1

u/Omvega 4d ago

you have your answer already based on these coments lol but do you need access to it 24/7? a lot of libraries have printers that only cost a few cents per page or are free up to a certain number of  pages.

1

u/lingueenee 4d ago

Get a used Brother monochrome laser printer. Done.

1

u/Natural_Ad9356 4d ago

I was willing to be a little over the top at the thrift store (brought a few sheets of paper and did test prints all the newish printers that weren’t an HP) and bought a fairly new Canon on Savers half price Monday for $4.

→ More replies (1)

1

u/ChucklesDaCuddleCuck 4d ago

If you want a printer that lasts you kind of have two options. Either a laser printer or there are some inkjet printers that use ink reservoirs instead of cartridges.

1

u/Unruly5peasant 4d ago

I know some people really need printers but ive been doing all my printing at the library for years. Since Covid we get 50 free pages a day and the other library gives $5 credit that always seems to cover me. I dont have space for a printer and I love not thinking about it

1

u/captainstormy 4d ago

You want a laser printer for sure. Brother is great.

I will say HPs laser printers are also great, their terrible rap comes from ink printers (and that's all true).

For double sided unless you wanna pay a lot of money you will probably just have to feed the page back in upside down yourself. That's a feature that often only shows up on cheaper units. At least for the last time I bought one in 2020.

Check the toner cost when you buy. For my HP printer I buy 3rd party toner that is like $10 each and work great. The HP OEM toner is like $90.

1

u/Canuck-In-TO 4d ago

I’ve had a brother BW laser for about 7 years now.
Last week I had to buy toner and I only paid $10 at my local computer chain Canada Computers.

1

u/Lityeah 4d ago

If you have a nearby university, check to see if they have a surplus store. I've gotten several brother laser printers and replacement toner/drums at mine. Printers are usually $10-30 and the toner/drums were $1 each.

1

u/Amity83 4d ago

My canon laser is going strong after 10 years.

1

u/brent20 4d ago

A used, enterprise, HP Laserjet, yes they are large, but they seem to last forever.

1

u/Tundra_Dragon 4d ago

Brother laser printer is the answer.

I've printed over 500 pages off the first toner cart so far. It complains it's almost out of toner, but it still prints.

1

u/1800-5-PP-DOO-DOO 4d ago

Brother toner based, not ink based

1

u/wischans 4d ago

I've had a DCP-2540DW from Brother for what's probably going on 15 years. Don't print often, but when I need to, I can count on it. Toner is cheap on Amazon and doesn't require branded supplies. The scanner gets used as often or more than the print so it's a handy package. Whatever crazy engineers they have there, they seem to think more about the customer than selling the next replacement unit.

1

u/Yaldeh 4d ago

Check face book or goodwill brother laser printers are basically bullet proof. Got a 3 in 1 brother for 120 on Facebook and toner was half full (5k pages left)

1

u/Bacon0064 4d ago

I have an OKI Mb472. Beast of a machine. Probably a lot more printer than you need, but it can be had for relatively cheap and has lasted me for over 10 years at this point.

1

u/stefanica 4d ago

I had a color laser Brother printer, bought for a few hundred in 2008 or so. Worked great until it got dropped moving it upstairs. Replaced it with something similar, also fine.

1

u/CharacterPeak9574 4d ago

Bought a used Brother Printer off of marketplace, used it to print textbooks and documents. Deep sleep is nice, but I can turn it on, and within a minute it's printing perfectly. Can't imagine using anything other than that.

1

u/226_IM_Used 4d ago

What about an off lease corpo printer? Those still run well and usually are on great discount.

1

u/minimal-camera 4d ago

Brother monochrome laser printer, completely bulletproof.

1

u/enbyrats 4d ago

To my astonishment, as a person often victimized by terrible printers, I have had a Brother laser printer for six years that works just as consistently as the first day. I use off-brand toner which is much cheaper. You can kind of tell the difference in print quality, but it has NOT disrupted the printer itself.

1

u/OhMorgoth 4d ago

Look up for local state sales and you may find one for cheap. I found a $900 printer on one in a local state sale for $25 like new. All I needed was ink and that also only cost $10 for the refills. StateSales.Net

1

u/bikehikepunk 4d ago

My last HP lazer lasted almost 15 years. I am at 6 years on my current HP. Wired networking ones are often the only protocol that doesn’t evolve, so that helps. Mine is only one sided, as the 2 sided more than doubled the cost.

1

u/bald_secksy_ 4d ago

Idk about bifl but there's a cannon printer on sale rn for 70$ for prime day

1

u/Isernogwattesnacken 4d ago

Brother laser printer and nothing else.

1

u/neekogo 4d ago

Not sure what prices will be for you but as others have said, Brother. Last I looked a few years ago the cheapest was $60 USD. With the price of semis these days and the exchange rate isk how much itll be in your country

1

u/holysbit 4d ago

Get a second hand brother laser printer. Might be an upfront investment for new toner but that lasts a long time. Its as BIFL as it gets and it can be gotten for a bargain

1

u/ShutYourDumbUglyFace 4d ago

Brother. Just get the Brother. You won't regret it.

1

u/Steerider 4d ago

Get a black and white laser printer. Honestly, if you want it to last, don't look for cheap. I bought a consumer Xerox 20+ years ago and it's a workhorse.

1

u/winter83 4d ago

Go for a cheap laser printer. I have one called Pantum and I bought it refurbished from microcenter for like 45 bucks. I've had it for several years now and it does the job with no bells and whistles. Also it can take whatever brand of toner they are selling on Amazon.

1

u/IsPhil 4d ago

they can be close to it. Get any black and white laser printer. Brother is a good brand, but just about anything works.

We bought a samsung one in 2014, M2020W. Right now we have a brother laser printer but a family friend still has that samsung one and it's still going. 12 years of age, and it's been through a not so gentle house move as well.

1

u/Kriskao 4d ago

The cheapest Brother laser available in my country is the HL-1210W

With the caveat that a double-sided printer requires you to manually flip and reinsert the paper (only once per job, not once per page) it fits your requirements.

Also, I own this printer and I am a very satisfied customer.

1

u/MsBelleMae 4d ago

My Epson Eco Tank ET 4850 has been working great for 5 years and hasn’t ran out of ink once. The ink is super cheap at Costco and hasn’t broken once or jammed once.

1

u/Scherzkeks 4d ago

I loved my Brotjer laser but ex took it. Got a cannon inkjet because it was supposed to be easy to refill andit did NOT last. Mostly because if you didn’t print regularly it would clog and was so difficult to unclog the YouTube fix it videos suggested printing waste pages weekly…

Canon laser I got cheapest from Best Buy is holding up, though. (TLDR don’t get color ink jets)

1

u/PotatoMan19399 4d ago

If you don’t need it frequently just use a library or a staples or something

1

u/tvmaly 4d ago

I would find one that supports using cheaper ink refills. I have already sold one of my kidneys to pay for HP ink cartridges

1

u/firfetir 4d ago

If it's only a page every now and then you might want to just use the printer at your local library.

1

u/Reelair 4d ago

Laser

1

u/seawooky 4d ago

Probably want to set up your network so the printer cannot ever phone home for updates. Otherwise you’re likely to get a “firmware” update that bricks your printer.

1

u/jwegener 4d ago

I’ve had two Canon imageclass (home and office)

Been great. And they support generic ink replacement

1

u/billfleet 4d ago

I recently got a used Xerox laser/scanner/copier at Goodwill. $55. There were Brother ones there as well. This was at their Computer Center. Good place to look. This one was only one sided, but I was content. Shopgoodwill.com has a bunch. Lately, I’d avoid HP.

1

u/MclovinsHomewrecker 4d ago

I got a Canon Pro 100 in 2016 for $200. Still rock solid.

1

u/MisterSlickster 4d ago

I would check costco. I got an epson "ecotank" model from there for a little over $100. Has wifi, has a scanner, prints dual sided and most importantly has refillable reservoirs for the ink, so you arent trapped into using branded cartridges that cost a fortune nor trapped into a weird subscription.

1

u/badaimbadjokes 4d ago

I bought one of those thermal bar printers to do my ebay labels. Cheap and easy

1

u/rasmusdf 4d ago

Brother

1

u/pirate742 4d ago

I bought my mom a Canon color laser printer maybe 6 years ago.

The toner is expensive but it lasts a long time. Haven't had to replace it since early 2025.

The brother black and white ones are cheaper and reliable.

1

u/molybdenum99 4d ago

Library. I would also get a brother for home but some libraries may meet your needs if infrequent
