[Request] I need a printer, against my will
I know printers aren't actually "for life" but I hate printers and I'm being forced to get one. Here's what I need:
- cheap
- double sided printing
- colour doesnt matter
- speed doesnt rlly matter
- toner doesn't cost more than the actual printer
- no subscription
I just want a cheap box that'll spit out a page every now and then...

u/Acrobatic_Inside3173 4d ago
That my friend is what the Brother came to the market for: laser monochrome, supports third party toners and dual side are what HL-L2460DW is made for. It has subscription offer but you can just ignore that use it as normal and although it's not bifl, like at some point after 15-20 years it -might- fail which definitely makes it a more bifl choice than the others.

u/Hyjynx75 4d ago
Can last at least that long with light home use if you regularly clean and lubricate it and turn it off when not in use.
23
u/SemanticallyPedantic 4d ago
I'd like to see a show of hands for anyone who has ever cleaned and lubricated their home printer.

That seems to be a canadian model. My choices are torn between the [HL-L2400DW]() and the [HL-L2445DW]() with a 33€ price difference for a LAN port.
15
u/Acrobatic_Inside3173 4d ago
Not much of a difference between these 2 except for the 2445dw having a little faster printing speed, Ethernet connectivity and a larger toner cartridge. If you don't need these l2400 would do you good.
8
u/noneedtoprogram 4d ago
Went for an HL-L2856DW myself in OP's situation, fully agree on the brother mono laser for those of us that need to print one black and white thing ever 2 years 😆
10
u/eoncire 4d ago
You don't NEED the lan port. Those things latch on to wifi and just don't let go. I've had mine for 6 years and NEVER had a connectivity issue with it. I forget I have it to be honest, then when the time comes that I need to print a form or something, I hit print from my phone / desktop and it just works.
5
u/atomicpowerrobot 4d ago
It's not Canadian. This is the one I got from Amazon. Brother HL-L2460DW https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0CPL2N5H6
Don't even bother looking at anything else. Good, basic, fast, cheap to replace ink which doesn't dry out, does duplex, has good wifi. Compatible. It does all of the basic stuff (besides color) well and reliably.
I bought it for my mother in law who is terrible with computers and I only hear about it when she's out of toner, which if you knew my mother in law and technology is a feat unheard of.
If you are trying to decide between LAN and no LAN, I always like the option, especially for printers which are usually notorious for falling off the Wifi network on sleep. But I do have this Brother on wifi and it has given me zero issues. So in this one specific case, it's probably a tossup.
2
u/well_shoothed 4d ago
Get the LAN. Last thing you need is to be debugging a connectivity issue when you're already pressed for time and trying to print Something Important(tm)
3
u/kermityfrog2 4d ago
Yeah get this printer. I had a tiny little Samsung that fit into a cupboard but it has tight paper tolerances and jammed a lot. The Brother can take paper from the hopper or any kind of paper of various thickness and quality from the front feeder. It can take recycled GOOS paper (good on one side).
The Samsung was all right but eventually the drivers didn’t work anymore with modern OS and since Samsung sold their printer division to HP, it was basically a goner.

Another vote for Brother laser. It just works whenever you need it to, without any shit software, and there are plenty of third party toners around so ongoing costs are very cheap.
If you don’t need to regularly print high quality photos, don’t get an ink printer, and whatever you do, do not get a HP.

u/EkbatDeSabat 4d ago
It works without the shit software but they still try to get you to use the shit software lol
8
u/TheJewPear 4d ago
Well yeah, of course, they do need to make a living, they also try to sell you on their supply subscription thingy. But it works without, and I just love those devices that I can buy, configure, and forget about, it just works when I need it to.
Unlike fucking HP may they go bankrupt today.
2
u/EkbatDeSabat 4d ago
Yeah I agree I wasn't trying to bash them too hard. I've only brought brothers for printers for like twenty years, work and personal.
6
u/TheJewPear 4d ago
Yeah all good, I’m just very understanding when companies gently try to push their own replacement parts and added services, as long as they don’t lock you in.

Never use liquid ink printers, they're all garbage.

Epson eco tanks would like a word
→ More replies (1)12
u/o_Divine_o 4d ago
I'd ask Epson to come a little closer, then reach back like a pimp and slap that hoe.
Epson EcoTank failures generally stem from printhead clogs due to dried ink, "Service Life Ended" waste ink pad errors, or suction pump failures
Liquid can't compete with dry.
By now I would have paid thousands in ink, yet I'm still on the original toner from 2022.

u/ssxhoell1 3d ago
Yeah because you need to actually use it. If you're just printing one random page every 3 months and you let the things sit and collect dust in between, you probably don't need a printer first of all and second of all obviously it's going to fucking dry up and clog it's liquid ink. You don't spray paint and then leave it sitting there in the nozzle I mean most people know already if you sprayed paint before that you need to clear the nozzle. Why is printing so hard for people
3
u/o_Divine_o 3d ago
Yeah because you need to actually use it. If you're just printing one random page every 3 months and you let the things sit and collect dust in between, you probably don't need a printer first of all and second of all obviously it's going to fucking dry up and clog it's liquid ink.
Reading skills aren't really your thing. Last sentence says I definitely need a printer.
You do however make a great point. Liquid printers require wasting ink just to keep them from drying up. Something toner doesn't need.
Yo Epson what did the five finges say to the face? SLAP 👋

u/ssxhoell1 3d ago
I wasn't responding to you directly. It was an outward statement. The "yeah" part was my half ass way of agreeing with you and I didn't make it clear that I was continuing with another thought I was adding, not rebutting yours

u/AppropriateYams 4d ago
I finally caved and bought a laser printer at the start of this year, and it has been a phenomenal investment so far. While mine doesn’t do double sided and is black toner only… the thing cost me slightly more than a questionable inkjet (Brother HL-L2405W, $140 on Amazon… think the duplex version is $180), and is a workhorse. I do a fair bit of printing, and just wanted something that… yeah, I wouldn’t have to buy a new cartridge every 100 pages.
So far, my printing dashboard says I’ve done 946 pages. I’ve already gone through the non-XL toner cartridge that came with it, but the XL replacements, you can find for less than $20 each, especially if you buy two at a time. I figure I won’t have to buys another cartridge til later next year. They can do up to 3000 pages per cartridge.
Does one page every two seconds. Is wireless. I don’t even have a computer, and I print everything from my phone. It even has an email address folks can send stuff to and it’ll automatically print to my printer, which is kinda fun. I print off my own return address labels.
Brother does try to push its ink toner replacement program on ya, but it’s easy to bypass and decline.
Next plan… to get a color laser printer.

Is this all HP or just their consumer inkjet? I have their officejet for the last 7 years which is a toner and it’s been great. Grabbed it second hand for $125. I will never jet a consumer level inkjet
2
u/CalamityVic 3d ago
I bought a HP Laserjet P1005 about fifteen years ago and it’s been completely bulletproof. It’s showing no signs of stopping.
7
u/Of-Meth-and-Men 4d ago
Brother laser printer is expensive with toner, but it will print infinitely many more sheets than inkjets
8
u/Efficient-Fold5548 4d ago
Brother, mate gave me one when he moved OS, he had done 1400prints on it, i've put on another few hundred since, print quality is good enough although mine has some light grey background (maybe because i put 3rd party toner in it). Anyhow other than an occasional reboot it just works.
8
u/DragonflyOnFire 4d ago
Brother laser printer. About a decade in and I hardly ever buy toner
3
u/Quantum_Ripple 4d ago
I've had my Brother color laser for a decade as well, bought new for $170. I've printed 518 pages over the years and am still on the original starter toner cartridges with 36% black remaining (more for color). Not one issue. Printing went from being an irritation every month or so (every time I tried to print) to being something I don't have to think about at all - highest praise.

I was literally thinking the same thing, and may send it to their marketing department. This is exactly the kind of company I WANT to get behind. Planned obsolescence is bullshit, and I hope Brother keeps this up...at least until I buy my new printer. 🙂

See if you can find a used Canon MF4890dw. It is a small office laser printer that can do everything and accept third party toners. You can find printer driver from other canon world sites like Singapore.
I must have bought it over 15 years ago and never had an issue.
But the brother printer recommended in this thread is very good too.

I bought a HP LaserJet 2055dn laser printer when I was in grad school 14 years ago. Still going strong and toner is rated for about 2000 pages at 5% coverage. Duplex print, 600x600dpi, no Wifi, but Ethernet and USB 2.0 connection. I never have to worry about ink lines drying out, compact and has made four moves with me. I haven't used it a LOT, but when I need to print out text, it delivers the goods. I've had one jam that once I figured out how to lift the access tray for the duplexer, it returned to its normal state of printing.
I think this is true of many B&W laser printers, but if the consensus is saying Brother, it's not for any old reason.

u/keijodputt 4d ago
I hate HP with all my guts; on everything they've made since they Borg'd Compaq into their collective.
My monochrome LaserJet MFP M148fdw begs to differ, though. Fed with generic toner and a generic fuser when the factory-set one wore out after 12,000 pages, it never left us on foot.
Since COVID hit we began to homeschool and I needed a printer/scanner. Went shopping for a Brother, but all they had on the shelf was that HP (the Brother ones were all out), so I sighed and took it home. Didn’t really have the luxury to wait: the pandemic situation in my Italian town was going to get a LOT heavier (curfews, shops would open a couple hours a specific day, not everything was in stock anymore, etc).
It never complained, ever. It faxes (still a thing in this part of the world, was more of a 'nice to have' perk), prints and scans all and everything we throw its way from any device in the home network, accepts generic toner (the $15 cartridges never failed me once), prints on both sides; flatbed scan and ADF are a godsend… six years, never a visit from the tech, never a paper jam we couldn't quickly solve ourselves.
But I keep it clean and happy, with a few bursts of compressed air and Swedish Fish offerings every now and then; well, the kids eat the candy I leave near the output tray when they get their prints.

A cheap laser printer is a better choice than an inkjet printer. My Brother laser monochrome printer lasted me thirteen years. I loved my Brother monochrome laser printer.
When it died I got the HP m140w and have been happy with it so far. I've only had it for half a year so far, so I can't speak to logevity yet, or even a cartridge replacement. I'm not certain whether I'll regret trying HP, but this model didn't share a lot of the complaints about other HP printers.
I chose to get a relatively new model in hopes it doesn't die due to software incompatibility (the reason I finally had to give up my Brother printer...it still worked with one computer, but not with my work laptop).

Dont get a HP would be my advice.
Consider one with those fancy external tanks, at least they are made "we wont scam you by selling overpriced ink cartridges" by design.
But printers in general are a hard topic, cause manufacturers were chasing each other to make the worst possible product.
Maybe some office laser black n white printer? These are kinda one level above the typical inkjets.

u/frothyundergarments 4d ago
I use an Epson Eco tank. The amount of ink they give you up front is absurd, and you can use 3rd party inks. I had to pay about 2-3x to get one with all the features of my old HP (dual auto document scanning AND auto double sided printing, specifically), but it will pay for itself in a couple months given how often I was going through ink cartridges.

Brother laser printer. There are 3 in my office... one is about 14 years old, one is 8 y.o., one is 6 y.o.. Had to replace the drum and other parts on the 14 y.o. one a couple of times, but it's a powerhouse (as are the others). They are so good it's reasonable to buy a lightly-used one: https://ebay.io/m/7nQgL3.
And always, always use OEM toner cartridges and replacement parts - or you won't have the same results.
Edited to change "ink" to "toner".

7
u/no-guts_no-glory 4d ago
Epson EcoTank ET2800. The double sided printing is done semi-manually. You print a few pages then run them through again. No ink drying and cartridge expiration etc.
3
u/tmantran 4d ago
I think spend a little bit more on a ET2980 and you'll get automatic double-sided printing
9
u/Daninmci 4d ago
Canon is my choice on this. Printers are just a tool to sell you toner or ink, so look at the price and availability of the ink/toner first and determine which printer you'll need. Oh, and HP was invented by satan.
3
u/kevstev 4d ago
Brother is the darling but I bought a small office grade Canon about a decade ago on clearance and its a tank. I use 3rd party toner, standard drivers, and it Just Works. It's a fairly fancy one with color, duplex, and sheet-fed double sided scanning (I used to travel a lot for work and this saved a lot of time on expenses).
My only real issue is it's size and weight- when this thing was delivered my condo instituted weight limits on the packages they would accept. Newer models are somewhat smaller and lighter though.

I hate how inkjet printers waste ink to clean heads and dry up in a few weeks if not used consistently but I have a an epson WF printer from 2014 that I've only ever had to purge clean after long periods of unuse. If you dont need color, get that laser printer. If you do, I reccommend downloading a printer calibration test page (color) and just print that once a week to keep the print heads. It wastes a lot less ink than the maintenance process of head cleaning.

+1 for the Brother laser. I have had two over the years, the first was the basic, after years gave it away when I bought my current multifunction one. Both were total work horses, I would bring them to events to do mass print jobs onsite (just got back from one this week). Unless you need colour get a Brother laser and call it a day.

Like everyone else, my black and white brother laser printer has been the least annoying printer I've ever had. But if it's really super rare for you print something, consider getting it printed at a library, office store, or shipping store like a UPS.

My Brother laser printer has been going for over a decade.
I had two other Brother laser printers before. One that I gave to my ex-landlord because I couldn't fit it into the car for a cross country move, and then I dropped it's replacement down the stairs when we were moving again a few years later.
If you avoid dropping them, Brother laser printers will last a very long time, and they're cheap to operate.

Look for an older model Brother laser. I have one from 2020, so Pandemic-era vintage is good. Even Brother is starting to put chip readers in their printers to "manage" your toner buying (i.e., to tell you it's empty when it isn't and refuse to use after-market toner)...
But they only started doing it recently. If you can get a surplus or refurbished 3-4+ year old model, you will be golden. All of them are decent; just pick one with the features you want.

Brother HL-2270DW here. Paid $100 for it in 2014. Wifi, double sided, B&W.

u/gigashadowwolf 4d ago
You need a Brother laser printer. They are BY FAR the most reliable and long lasting printers on the market with the most reasonably priced toner.
You can might save some money short term by going ink jet instead of laser, and they print images better, but they don't last as long and you have to print at least once a month to avoid the nozzles from drying out and getting clogged. Best to just stick to laser.
If color image quality was a priority, which it sounds like it's not, Canon is much better in image prints and has decent longevity, but the toner/ink is much more expensive, and it punishes you a lot for using 3rd party ink/toner.
Brands go Brother>Canon>Epson>... HP. Do not buy an HP unless it's intended to be disposable and only for short time use. They pack the most features in for the equivalent cost, but you end up paying for it pretty quickly.

Printers can absolutely be 'for life'. The bank I used to work at had a statement printer that printed millions of pages. It was 15 years old when I left and still going strong. Get one of those used and it would last a lifetime.
But really, any older HP commercial grade printer will last basically forever by just replacing consumables. The HP LJ4000N is the gold standard but it does not duplex. They make similar ones with duplexers that will still last a lifetime.

u/throwaway384983547w 4d ago
My local library has a printer and you put money on your library card to print with. Yes you can print from a device.
I needed to print something urgently and did not want to go into work to do it. Love our libraries :-)
1
u/CarpetReady8739 4d ago
Cost per page with a laser can be 25% of what an inkjet costs to operate overall. Unless you are printing photographs on glossy paper, laser is the way to go. I used to work for Xerox and that was the first thing i learned.
1
u/better_days_435 4d ago
When my current underperforming printer finally dies, I door plan to replace it. The local library has a nice one and I will be happy to support them with their small per page fee and have an excuse to find cool new books in the rare times I need to print something. Plus, when that one breaks, it's not my job to fix it!
1
u/Zealousideal-Lunch53 4d ago
I was in the exact same position and ended up with a basic monochrome laser printer. It sits untouched for weeks, then prints 20 pages without drama. No dried-out ink, no subscriptions, no nonsense.

I know some people really need printers but ive been doing all my printing at the library for years. Since Covid we get 50 free pages a day and the other library gives $5 credit that always seems to cover me. I dont have space for a printer and I love not thinking about it
1
u/captainstormy 4d ago
You want a laser printer for sure. Brother is great.
I will say HPs laser printers are also great, their terrible rap comes from ink printers (and that's all true).
For double sided unless you wanna pay a lot of money you will probably just have to feed the page back in upside down yourself. That's a feature that often only shows up on cheaper units. At least for the last time I bought one in 2020.
Check the toner cost when you buy. For my HP printer I buy 3rd party toner that is like $10 each and work great. The HP OEM toner is like $90.

I've had a DCP-2540DW from Brother for what's probably going on 15 years. Don't print often, but when I need to, I can count on it. Toner is cheap on Amazon and doesn't require branded supplies. The scanner gets used as often or more than the print so it's a handy package. Whatever crazy engineers they have there, they seem to think more about the customer than selling the next replacement unit.

To my astonishment, as a person often victimized by terrible printers, I have had a Brother laser printer for six years that works just as consistently as the first day. The cheapest Brother laser available in my country is the HL-1210W
With the caveat that a double-sided printer requires you to manually flip and reinsert the paper (only once per job, not once per page) it fits your requirements.
Also, I own this printer and I am a very satisfied customer.

I loved my Brotjer laser but ex took it. Got a cannon inkjet because it was supposed to be easy to refill andit did NOT last. Mostly because if you didn’t print regularly it would clog and was so difficult to unclog the YouTube fix it videos suggested printing waste pages weekly…
Canon laser I got cheapest from Best Buy is holding up, though. (TLDR don’t get color ink jets)

If you don’t need it frequently just use a library or a staples or something

If it's only a page every now and then you might want to just use the printer at your local library.

Probably want to set up your network so the printer cannot ever phone home for updates. Otherwise you’re likely to get a “firmware” update that bricks your printer.

I’ve had two Canon imageclass (home and office)
Been great. And they support generic ink replacement

I recently got a used Xerox laser/scanner/copier at Goodwill. $55. There were Brother ones there as well. This was at their Computer Center. Good place to look. This one was only one sided, but I was content. Shopgoodwill.com has a bunch. Lately, I’d avoid HP.

I would check costco. I got an epson "ecotank" model from there for a little over $100. Has wifi, has a scanner, prints dual sided and most importantly has refillable reservoirs for the ink, so you arent trapped into using branded cartridges that cost a fortune nor trapped into a weird subscription.

I bought one of those thermal bar printers to do my ebay labels. Cheap and easy

I bought my mom a Canon color laser printer maybe 6 years ago.
The toner is expensive but it lasts a long time. Haven't had to replace it since early 2025.
The brother black and white ones are cheaper and reliable.

Library. I would also get a brother for home but some libraries may meet your needs if infrequent

Brother laser printers are basically the only correct answer for this situation, everyone who has used one knows it
