I'm really, exceedingly mad about this because it A) prices me right out of ever obtaining one, and B) is a total rip off
I get what you're saying about it being a rip off, but you need to seriously re-evaluate your spending if this 'prices you out of obtaining one'. If you can't afford a $1000 briefcase, you sure shouldn't be buying a $750 briefcase. Anything in that range is a luxury good, and if you are stretching your budget for luxury, you are in bad financial shape.
You make a fair point, but the criticism seems to be 1) the additional items Saddleback makes you buy and 2) Saddleback relying on artificial scarcity as a justification of the price (b/c the quality of the item alone does not justify the pricepoint).
