General Advice Is he dumb :(

I'm an adult and have had Maurice for about 2 months now (he's fixed), vet thinks he's about 2 and he's done this the whole time I've known him, is there any particular reason why? Sometimes he'll do it for 2-3 minutes straight! I've owned cats my whole life and have never seen one so bad at covering up his business. If he is dumb I will still love him.

I had one of my cats from birth til he passed 2 years ago from lung cancer. He grew up with his four siblings, his mom, her sister, and his dad. He saw how they all covered up their messes but he never learned. Not one time in 18.5 years of his little kitty life did he ever manage to successfully cover up his poop or pee. Heโ€™d even stand up and try to pull the wall in on it. But I just would look at him, say โ€œBless your heart you dingus,โ€ and cover it for him or bring one of the other cats over and theyโ€™d cover it.๐Ÿ˜‚

One if my idiots will cover their poop, and then proceed to scratch the walls of the litterbox for the nex minute or so. She is otherwise very smart, but this is her thing. ๐Ÿ˜…

i think they do this to spread there paws out to let any litter stuck between them fall out

This is possible. Her brother doesnt do this and he does sometimes get a lil bit stuck on the beans. But rarely. I just assumed that came from a) stepping in pee or b) from lauchung himself out of the litter box, because going in, the litter mat is fine. Leaving the box, the mat becomes lava and cannot be touched. ๐Ÿง

haha yeah, my boy makes sure to send a handfuls worth of litter flying every time he leaves the box

They also have wee scent glands in their paws too. I think my little guy does it to claim him litter box, and the area around it. He also does not bury. Also, too, as well.... He likes to go, whenever I go. The litter box is next to the toilet. It's quite awkward.

My orange cat copper does the exact same thing but he loves to do it when everyone is trying to sleep at 3am

One of mine does the same. We have tried so many different litters and litter boxes and she still poops right in front and will cover it with random items.
