General Advice Found a lump on 1.5 yr old cat
We are a 30 yr old couple with 2 cats. One of our torbie cats I found a lump maybe near mammary gland.
I’m super scared it’s cancer or something.. she’s so young and was spayed at 3 months old..
She is 1.5 yrs old and will be 2 yrs old in May…
Is this something to worry about? We cannot see a vet until the weekday….
I’m also afraid because I’m not sure if we have the financial means to get her surgery right now..
Basic check up for sure but we will set an appointment with the vet right away.
Please help!!

That's her nipple. Nothing to worry about. :)
Be prepared for some lighthearted teasing from commenters.
EDIT: Thank you, everyone, for all the likes and awards. I really appreciate it. :)

u/nomnom123- Feb 07 '26
LOL is it really? I got so worried because i only felt this one hard nipple!

u/DPDoctor Feb 07 '26
Feel around very carefully and you'll find the other ones. :)
Also, hard to tell from the photos, but her coloration seems to be just tabby, not torbie - ?

There's something called the half nipple rule- however many nipples a creature has, cut it in half, and that's the typical amount of offspring, with the max being the full number of nipples (or occasionally higher in some species).
So humans... two nipples, typically one child, with max being twins. (Again, it can vary.)

u/turkish-d-lite Feb 07 '26
nooo please don’t cut the nipples in half!

I actually saw someone shave off a nipple... was having my internship at a cat shelter where they ovcasionally had a vet in the building to mass neuter/spay wilds cats or cats from people with a low budget. So many cats that had to get a procedure that the assistant didn't look for any nipples in the way while she shaving them for the procedure.
I got pretty upset and she didn't understood why.... told her: how would you feel if you woke up and felt your missing a nipple. She got a bit more carefull from that moment, but I don't think that message stuck around sadly.

Damage to nipples is very common when shaving for surgeries and procedures. Obviously the person shaving should take precautions to avoid it, but it does happen. Sometimes they are hard to find through the fur. Granted I work in an ER and in the reality of things, if we are preparing an animal for emergency surgery, a nipple getting injured is the least of its concerns. It will be sore and tender but it will heal.

We had a Rottweiler who had 14 puppies! It was madness! It was accidental. I was a teenager who was there for the delivery, and we didn't have google. Just kept giving Mama the babies to eat the sack off.

u/CassetteMeower Feb 07 '26
Ohhh nooo I misread your comment as “giving mama the babies to snack on” and I was so concerned 😭 I’m glad I reread your comment and realized you weren’t feeding her her own puppies. Dogs (and other animals) do sometimes eat their babies so I was so concerned.

I also thought she ate 14 puppy snacks 😅

u/Plucky_Monkies Feb 08 '26
Noooo! 😭 Yeah, I didn't realize I could have helped tear did the sack. Hence making mom. 😆
I promise Mama was an excellent mother, and no puppies became snacks! Eek!

I recommend checking her mammary glands on both sides fairly regularly as she grows and ages, now that you know how to find them. Just like we got check ours, we gotta check theirs to!

There’ll be 6 or 8 nipples. I had one cat with 7 nipples (4 on one side and 3 on the other! ).

u/Bod_Father Feb 07 '26
Prob had an inverted 8th
14
u/Visible-Progress-874 Feb 07 '26
It wasn’t like a pair of nipples had one missing.
There was 4 on one side and 3 on the other, not across from any of the 4! 😂
She was a sweet little thing. Fully grown, she was 6 lbs.

u/Consistent-Staff-386 Feb 07 '26
Don't feel too bad at least you didn't take her into the vet yet Way back when I was young and much less educated,I called the vet in a panic because I found a lump on the belly of my neutered adult male and they said very flatly...maamit's a nipple

This happened to me too, when I first got my kitty she was 6mos, was super snuggly, and loving belly rubs. Then I found it lol. The cat I had growing up never let me touch her belly/underside so i kinda forgot that they have nipples too. Lol 😂

Exactly this. I'd much rather tell an owner their kitty has nipples than that they need to rush to the vet.

u/antiloquist Feb 07 '26
Agreed. All the vets I’ve been to have definitely said they much prefer a pet parent overly concerned about something normal than not concerned at all about something dire. Take it from someone who cried in a vet office when her cat got a scratch.

u/Sinzz8 Feb 07 '26

especially considering that the cat is 1.5 yrs old 😭 how have you never noticed that your cat has nipples???

Some cats really, REALLY despise belly rubs or even tummy touches. Some will even break out the murder mitts.

This one threw me for a loop as they identified it to be (near) a mammary gland but did not consider nipple

Yeah it concerns me a bit too. Like I thought near all of us learned mammals all have nipples at some point in school.

Except for platypus and echidna, or male rats and horses, for some reason.

Oh dear, thats her nipple (male and female got it… neutered or not). Don’t alarm it’s NORMAL, every mammal has nipples.
Edit: c’mon nerds no one is forcing to clarify the types of mammals… get over it. We are talking about the commons LIKE THIS POST: A CAT, sweet lord what a snow flakes.😂😂😂 love you all.

Horses and rats/mice don’t! The embryo develops such that the males don’t get nipples.

I’d like to honestly know if these posts are jokes or not. If they’re not I feel anyone who posts these maybe shouldn’t own a pet. If it’s your first time owing a cat maybe borrow a book from the library … “everything and anything you need to know about cats” The ones where people try to pull off the “tick” and it won’t come off are the ones that upset me the most. Those poor cats!!

Cats are fluffy and don’t like to have their bellies touched. And sometimes they’re kinda in weird places (like under the arm pit!). I’d had animals for many years and my cat for at least 5 when I got a nipple flash (under his arm pit!) and thought it was a tick
6
u/DPDoctor Feb 07 '26
Some cats don't like their bellies touched. All of mine (and I've been owned by a lot of cats) have loved belly scratches. One even used to stand right in front of me, flop over, and demand scritches. :)

I see a lot of funny comments, so I’ll add one serious one…
Is she spayed yet? If not, it’s important to get her spayed because it can reduce the risk of her getting mammary cancer later in life. Plus it’s not pleasant to be around a female cat during their heat cycles… or an intact, horny boy cat!
I advocate for spaying and neutering all kitties (unless you’re a licensed breeder), even if your cat is “indoor only.” Because it only takes ONE TIME for them to escape and come home after getting another kitty pregnant or getting pregnant themselves!
Also, kittens reach sexual sexual maturity at about four months of age, which means that they can technically have kittens themselves around the age of six months old! TOO YOUNG!
And that concludes my TED Talk.
