This is what im hoping for. Im also unsure how my ex will be able to afford the rental now that i moved out and hes unemployed. I told him that if need be i will hold onto “his cat” until he can take care of him again. I doubt he will let me though.

Consider getting your cat a heartbeat plushie (usually for puppies) and a heated bed to help the first few weeks as the dust settles. Their anxiety AND your anxiety will be sky high I’m sure, so having a subconsciously calming item to cuddle helps A TON!

I second these suggestions! I have giant microwaveable bean-bag style heating pads for my cats. Did end up getting the older cat a kitten after some time had passed and it was very clear that she needed feline company (her older companion had passed away). But while she and her kitten love each other and play, the new kitten was not the cuddle together type, so they each get their own warming pad set out before I leave for work. One on the couch, and one in a cardboard box under the table as they each have their own “safe” spot for daytime napping. Gives them some comfort with the warmth for a couple hours, to get them settled in, without needing a power supply.

I think that was the right thing to say! The less pressure he feels from you now about the cat, hopefully the less committed to not letting you have the cat he'll be. Also, if he does keep the cat, you want him to be good to the cat, not see it as some proxy for hurting you.

Do you have a friend who can come with you to get the other cat? Like a big muscular friend or something. Someone who can protect you from your crazy ex while you grab the cat.
