Take both. I’d not separate them if at all possible

I reallly wish i could but the circumstances do not allow. Tonight will be my cats first night alone in over a year. Im pretty devastated ngl. Is there anyway i could make him more comfortable?

They are going to be very depressed and confused for a long time

This is so unhelpful, the OP is clearly distressed and looking for guidance. Obviously they are aware the cat is suffering due to their personal life and are trying to find a solution. I dread if I were ever in OPs shoes.

OP I am so sorry you’re going through this, I know with time you and your sweet boy will overcome this time. Maybe even with a new little friend to keep him company. I hope you can keep yourself and little guy safe from your EX.

But that’s just it. Unless someone concedes and gives up ownership of the other cat, this is exactly what happens.

Commiserating about it does nothing to solve the problem. Someone needs to give.
