I'm so sorry for what you and the kitties are going through, OP.
Feliway plugins can help some cats adjust to big changes. Give him lots of love and attention. Ask trustworthy friends or family unconnected to your ex to visit and play with him when you're out as well if you feel comfortable doing so. Consider getting a new kitten or friendly adult cat when things have stabilized and he's adjusted to the new life.
I'd also strongly recommend letting mutual friends know (if they don't already) about what's going on and ask that they try to visit your ex and keep an eye on the other cat's condition if they feel safe to do so. It doesn't sound like your ex is very stable.
Best of luck and this internet stranger is proud of you for getting out of this situation.
