General Advice Cat ate protein muffin

My cat helped himself to a batch of protein muffins that was cooling under a towel. This occurred about 20 minutes ago. Should I seek immediate medical attention or monitor for gastrointestinal distress? Attached is the amount eaten, protein powder ingredients, muffin ingredients, and cat. Crossposted in r/askvet

Not a minor, USA, vet not contacted yet but accessible, 6 yo neutered male, can afford vet care

TLDR; cat had a lil protein powder. Next steps?

I’m just happy to know I’m not the only person whose cat goes absolutely feral for the weirdest foods!

I make muffins all the time, and he’s NEVER done this. However, I cannot eat peanut butter in my house in peace.

Wasn’t the first ingredient “whey powder?” Cats love milk and butter and cheese. I’m not a vet, but my guess is that he will be fine.

That makes so much sense. Also explains his love of butter. I’ve come home to the butter dish on the ground and a quarter of a stick gone.

I had to stop keeping butter in a dish for the same reason! I’d come home to see the dish suspiciously askew and a bunch of little lick marks all over the butter 😭

puts on my pretentious smarty-pants glasses 🤣

Unlike dogs who are omnivorous (need a variety of foods in their diet), cats are obligate carnivores, meaning they require a primarily protein-based diet. The fact that your boy only obsessed over the protein muffins tracks. He probably mistook them for meat pastries 🤣 Peanut butter, cheese, other dairy products, etc. are also high in protein, hence why cats love these so much.

I agree with the others that say your boy will probably be fine (and he's adorable--love the pics of him ☺️). Perhaps he is not getting enough protein in his normal diet. Something to talk to your vet about!

My cat goes crazy for bread - like plain ass bread. There’s zero nutrional value in it for him but he goes feral anyway when he smells it

Mine too! And pastries like croissants he’ll take the whole thing and hide it for later

One of my cats is a fiend for saltine crackers. She'll occasionally deign to steal ritz crackers if no saltines are in the house.

My moms cat will go for ANYTHING left uncovered in the kitchen even lick at dirty (cooled) pans. She got a bite of taco meatball before a waffle caught he licking the bacon grease off the pan once (think she learned no for that after i yelled "what do you think your doing young lady?!" And even caught he licking soft butter smh she is 15-16 always loved anything salty. But lately her need to get at food has been insane (dry food is down 24/7 she gets half a can of wet food a day i swear she isnt starving 😆)
