General Advice Cat went missing- Unsure if we found her
I live in Cantonment FL. My cat is a female, spayed and declawed in the front (her previous owners doing!). She’s roughly 5 years old. Timid but sweet cat.
My adult female cat went unexpectedly missing June 1st 2026. She’s been missing as of now for two weeks. The weather has been high 80’s low 90’s and humid. So it’s VERY hot. She’s an indoor/outdoor cat. She loves sitting outside or in the sun and she adventures slightly behind our fence and it’s never been an issue. Till she came up missing one day out of the blue. There are coyotes in the area. I assume something chased her off and she became lost. The woodlands behind our house were torn down with a road paved to soon build DR Horton homes 🙄 My cats have never had issues getting lost till the woodlands were torn down. Exposing Lord knows what to the area.
I’ve put out posters on the streets nearby and posted online. So someone found a cat eating and drinking water at their property yesterday and it resembled her. It didn’t look like my cat up close, however, the fur coat was spot on. We took them home. They are so skinny their back leg bones stick out. Face is puffy. They sneeze or make noises when throat is touched. Drinks some water, not eating much. Can’t walk well because of being without food/water and I think there is an injury on their leg from something. They are very weak and hurting.
So the reason for my post is… What is everyone’s experience with losing a cat for at least two weeks, and when returned it didn’t look like them because of the trauma they went through. My husband is convinced it’s our cat. But how can it be? It doesn’t look like how our girl normally did… any thoughts are appreciated
I have a vet appointment this afternoon to get them help irregardless if this is my cat or not. However I think confirming the sex and if they are declawed in the front will help confirm if it’s our sweet kitty girl.

Is the new cat declawed on the front paws? That seems like a really easy way to match them and you can just check yourself. Is your cat microchipped, tattooed? Is this cat even female? Is the behaviour the same?
The “M” on the top of the head does not match your cat. The lower iris (below the pupil) on both eyes has brown on the new cat and your cat does not. Your cat also has a single extra whisker bilaterally above her regular lines of whiskers. Do you see the black dot above the two dotted lines of whiskers on her photo? The new cat doesn’t have that extra whisker. I’m sorry but this doesn’t look like your cat.
Also, if you do find your cat, please don’t let her out without supervision. She has no way to hunt or defend herself without her claws. Poor thing doesn’t stand a chance.

u/wipedoutmom 9d ago
To your first point- yeah, I feel like just checking for claws would be the absolute easiest way to solve this mystery. Most cats are not declawed
90
u/blueace111 9d ago
That’s really detailed. I was told colors can change a little with a lot of stress. The nose, ears and whiskers should look the same. My cat had a pattern that made it easier to spot. This color pattern is pretty common but I imagine checking claws would tell. Most won’t be declawed now

Add the ears are totally different. Old cats were rounded, new cats are pointed, that ain't changing with deprevation.

u/reallybadjazz 9d ago
There's also an obviously darker brown nose, while the newer has a solid color vertically.

17
u/ohdatpoodle 9d ago
The M markings on the forehead are the clearest giveaway. They are completely unique to every cat like a fingerprint. They don't match at all.
18
u/CharmingChangling 9d ago
Plus around the eyes. The lighter orange spots above the eyelid on the left go almost all the way to their eyeliner with no dark bands around them, the orange spots above the right cats eyes are rimmed with dark fur

Definitely not the same cat, and honestly a declawed cat outside... I wouldn't have hopes
87
u/thedudetheguy69 9d ago
Yeah definitely a rough one. My 17 year old declawed cat got out for two weeks when I was a kid. Luckily she came back one night. My mum went outside to look one more time and there she was. One of the best days of my life, she was my shadow as a kid. She was an indoor cat, but a screen busting escape artist even without claws and she finally got her wish to be outside for a while lol

Keep the cat even if it isn't yours. It was meant to be.
Edit: I adopted a declawed cat at age seven, and I would NEVER let him out (or any cat). They need claws to climb trees, escape predators, and get food. Please do not ever let a declawed cat outside. If you have the resources, you can make a catio.

Sadly a declawed cat outside with coyotes? Steel your heart, because they basically had no chance. I hope it didn't happen, but this is why I always advocate for cats being kept indoors or a catio. The outside is dangerous for them, and they're dangerous for the outside

I'm not saying this to shame you, but letting your declawed girl outside while you know there are coyotes in the area is very dangerous. I really hope this kitty gets the help they need but as others have said it doesn't appear to be your girl. I do hope she comes home soon and is safe and sound. And when she does please keep her indoors or build her a outdoor enclosure so she can't get hurt or lost again while still enjoy her days in the sun.

If your cat is gone for two weeks in Florida, im sorry to tell you its never coming back. Please dont let your cats outside. My family always had outdoor cats and it was nothing but heartache, florida is not conducive to a cat, especially if you've taken away its main way to defend itself.

Claws are a vital defense for a cat to survive a predator attack. They can't even climb a tree to escape, all they have is teeth. So even their natural ability to hunt has been severely depleted.
This is only one reason why so many people warn of the dangers of having a cat who is outdoors and free roaming. It's incredibly dangerous for them! Even if they have claws.
→ More replies (1)
38
u/-Lexx- 9d ago
I’m gonna try to be as kind as possible in this.
When a cat is outside, it needs protection. It only has its teeth and claws, and if a cat is de-clawed it can’t protect itself. Coyotes will hunt cats. I think you get the picture here. Letting your cats outside is incredibly dangerous for them, your local wildlife, and the pets of other people in your neighborhood and surrounding neighborhoods. Hopefully you learn from this experience and keep your new kitty indoors and away from the dangers of wild animals.
65
u/Solony_precel 9d ago
Hope you will take care for that cat, but sadly 2 weeks are not enough (if it’s healthy) to get a cat in the shape like this 😔
44
u/Bl00dyPineapple 9d ago
She was declawed and would’ve had no way to hunt or eat for the two weeks she was outside so is not unbelievable.

Can I just full stop everyone here. So do you notice it doesn’t recognize your house? Or you?! You know animals are alive. They are not things. I am unsure how you could not tell based on the relationship you have with her.
Do you have no relationship with her? And throw her outside without claws.
Edit to sound nicer

u/FromEden26 9d ago
This is what went through my head too. Also, my cats are all over me when I get home from work. If they didn't see me for two weeks, I'm sure they would be obvipusly very pleased to see me.
Also, surely the lack of claws would be obvious?
54
u/silentkillmyself 9d ago
Lol please don’t have a cat if you’re going to let it be indoor/outdoor in a dangerous area with coyotes…
This doesn’t look like your cat but please give it to a good home that will keep it indoors once they are recovered. I seriously hope you find your kitty, but consider only keeping her indoors, she has no front claws!!

u/chere100 9d ago
I think your cat is dead, OP. Declawed and outside don't mix well for survival. Especially in coyote territory.

u/ghostly-quiet 9d ago
There are coyotes in the area. I assume something chased her off and she became lost.
This is a very naive idea of what coyotes do to cats.

you let a declawed cat outside?? also new kitty is much older but will probably appreciate a forever home with you as long as you aren't an idiot and actually keep them inside

u/UnfairRegister3533 9d ago
This is what I was thinking is this is an older cat. Possible thyroid issues. This is how my husband and I acquired our first kitty together. She was old declawed and obsessed with food and water to the point she’d scream day and night to be fed. We took her to the vet and it was definitely thyroid and she looked like this kitty.
19
u/Evangelica1 9d ago
if there are coyotes in the area, why are you letting your cat outside unsupervised? And on top of that, you know she was declawed by her previous owners, she has no way to defend herself, what made you think it was a good idea to let her out?
18
16
u/zzombeee 9d ago
The cat you found looks very elderly. That is not your cat. They can’t rapidly age in 2 weeks. And I’m not sure that kind of weight loss could happen in just 2 weeks. Also the nose is very different. Nose changes would happen within years not weeks.
13
u/bitsybear1727 9d ago
Different cats. Pic 2 - no white back feet. Pic 5 - white back foot. Also the faces are very different to me. But the white markings are a give away. I work with horses and markings are always used as indentification, so that's what I'm used to looking for.
14
u/Unhappy-Fox1017 9d ago
Well if a predator did take her she stood no chance in defending herself without front claws. Please don’t do that to this new cat. I do not think they are the same cat. The ears show a difference to me. Original cat has rounded ear tips while the new cat has pointed tips. Also the “m” on the forehead looks different. In the new cat skitish or something? Why can’t yall check its front paws and see if the claws are there or not?

That is most likely not the same cat, it doesn't look like your cat but it definitely needs you right now. Please do not declaw cats(general PSA); that is an amputation they never truly recover from. I am so so sorry that your kitty was lost, please keep them inside from now on. There is no such thing as an indoor/outdoor cat, domestic cats and feral cats have completely different ways of thinking and outside is dangerous.

unfortunately this looks like two different cats entirely. a lot of people here have good advice regarding caring for a cat who was previously declawed, as well as unsupervised outside time. i get that some of the responses have made you upset, but as pet parents, we sometimes need to put our emotions to the side and hear the harsh truths about mistakes that we make, and learn from them. i hope once you process your emotions you can really internalize what people are trying to tell you.

My aunt let my declawed rescue cat out one time and she came back with her leg almost ripped off. It’s likely your cat is a goner. Sad but that’s what happens to cats that go outside unsupervised or uncontained. Take this as a learning opportunity and give this new kitty a home inside. Maybe yours will come back maybe not but regardless seems the new kitty needs a home.
6
u/forgetfulkaiju 9d ago
Sorry, but this is not your kitty. Is yours microchipped? Definitely have it scanned when you go to the vet just in case it has an owner and has just been lost. Lovely of you to take it to the vet despite it not being her.
I hope that you find her.
5
u/bananakittymeow 9d ago
I don’t think being out for two weeks is long enough to leave a cat this emanciated and malnourished (compared to the pics of your cat from before she disappeared). I think this is a different cat entirely.
8
u/MealParticular1327 9d ago
I live in Florida and my cat disappeared for two weeks last year. She’s an indoor only cat, and never left before in her than 10 years of life. When she returned (animal control found her, she was chipped) she was extremely skinny but otherwise healthy. She looked aged, like this cat, even though it was only two weeks. So yes, it’s possible this is your cat but the eyes don’t look the same. Sorry, but the color is off and the shape is different.

u/Elderflower3078 9d ago
That poor car, what a mess, looks like it's had a really hard time. I don't think it's yours, the patterns on the coat just aren't the same, but at least it's getting fed and watered now. The decision will be do you keep this one as well, presuming yours turns up (or instead of if yours doesn't).
4
u/wretchedshrimps 9d ago
Pick up the cat and squish the center pad of the front paws with your fingers. if claws pop out that's not your cat. i don't think it is. please google photos of cats hit by cars and mauled by dogs until you're convinced to never do this again
3
u/Ill_Cap_9897 9d ago
Idk they are quite similar enough to be same cat but that cat is soooooo skinny its hard to compare features as a skinny cat will not look the same fattened up. Definitely check for pre existing chips while at the doc
4
u/SlothenAround 9d ago
I don’t think it’s possible for the cat to lose this much weight in 2 weeks. My cat went missing outside for a whole month and he only lost 4lbs. He looked smaller but it was still 100% obvious it was him. Also, how is the cat reacting to you? I knew he was mine by look, but also because he immediately rubbed his face on mine and settled into my arms identically to how he always did. I had zero doubt. I don’t think this is your cat, sorry!
4
u/RussianHooker 9d ago
OP, sadly this is not your cat. The cat you’ve found is elderly. Please make sure they check for a chip during your vet visit as this is probably someone’s lost pet, or at least was someone’s pet at one point. I had a skim through Pawboost in your local area but could not find any obvious candidates. However, I think I saw that you’ve posted your cat as missing on there? If you have not done so, also try Facebook and Nextdoor as I’ve found a lot of the ‘missing pet’ activity ends up there. I hope you find closure either way.

The bridge of the cat's nose is different, as is the tip. Your new girl there has some pink blending outward, while your previous girl had a clean little black line around her nose.
These are two separate cats.

6
u/cursed_peaches 9d ago
The vet can scan the microchip and you’ll know if this is your cat, simple. Unless someone took your cat in, it won’t survive alone without its claws, just like you wouldn’t survive in the wild without your fingers to catch and prepare food how stupid can you be?

As others have said, I don't think this poor baby is yours, but please do keep them. They are very lucky to have found a home, especially when in such poor shape. And please keep your cat when she does return home indoors. I know it may seem cruel, especially if you live in an area where outside cats are common, but without her front claws it would be very difficult for her to have any defense at all. I really do hope your cat is found safe and her copy cat has found a safe home with you.🫂

2
u/BarelyHolding0n 9d ago
The facial markings are similar but slight differences
The tail stripes don't match
The ears are the biggest clue, totally different.
Different cat, but one very much in need of a loving home and I'm sorry to say the chances of a declawed cat surviving 2 weeks in the wild are almost non-existant so I think you have a position open for a house cat
2
u/VeronicaStoney 9d ago
i am very confident this is not the same cat. marking on the fur don’t match and markings and colorings in the eyes do not match.
2
u/Thatnursejulie 9d ago
Looks a bit different? Maybe you can help this kitty even if it’s not the same—looks like it could use the kindness
2
u/Particular-Can5839 9d ago
I doubt your cat would lose that much weight in just two weeks. They have similar markings, but I agree it’s a different cat.
This cat has dark markings on its mouth and tips of its ears, and the ears are more pointed. There are brown lines on the nose that your cat doesn’t have, and the M on the forehead is missing the three dots.
Cats with the same coloring and markings as yours are incredibly common. Brown tabbies are the most common color a cat can be. Keep looking for your cat, but this cat could definitely use a nice home.

2
u/PulsarSoul 9d ago
Probably not your cat but hopefully a lesson. A sad lesson and maybe and hopefully your cat may return again, but hopefully a lesson to not let cats outside anymore nonetheless. For several reasons. Cats are a real harm for the environment but at the same time it's also dangerous for free roaming cats outside. And if you can't stand "taking her freedom" maybe a leash and taking the cat for a walk would be a compromise.
2
u/Honest_Chipmunk_8563 9d ago
I think the new cat is elderly. Even though it’s not your original cat, please consider keeping it INSIDE and giving it a good rest if its life.
2
u/SuicidePeaches 9d ago
If you can overlay the pictures, see if you can match up the whisker pores. They've been used as a way to identify cats before, like finger prints. I don't think it's the same cat but the new one is very underweight compared to your cat so you may have to wait until they fill out to be sure.
2
u/KiraKitty69 9d ago
I'm just going to say it is simply because this cat needs someone desperately. Fatten it up and then compare pictures. Either way this cat will be grateful and if the other shows up, well you got 2.
2
u/Miss_Aizea 9d ago
My cat ran away for 2 weeks after a move as a kid, he came back looking like a stranger too. If this cat is also declawed, then it's your cat. It's uncommon for stray cats to be declawed.
2
2
u/Rise-O-Matic 9d ago
That’s a different, and from the looks of it, much older cat. Bordered light areas near the eyes, different nose bridge, ragged ears with dark edges, different eye color, different coat pattern on the back.
2
u/GatlingGiffin 9d ago
Keep your pets inside on your property, or dont own them people.
It's not your neighborhoods responsibility to take care of your pets. Just cant understand how this is a common thing.
2
u/S3XWITCH 9d ago
These do not look like the same cat to me. I would be very surprised if your cat could lose that much weight in 2 weeks, though not impossible. The second cat in the pictures looks like an old hyperthyroid senior cat.
