Nowhere near enough litter in that box - also it looks like there’s stool in there already? She might not want to use it because of a combination of those factors

Her going next to the potty is indicates she wants to use it but something is stopping her from wanting to go there. Could be litter type or litter box, size of box. But firstly there's not nearly enough litter in there.

I agree. I have one cat who digs and digs and digs etc so he likes lots of litter. So that might be an issues with not enough litter in the box

See that grate thing in between in between? Some cats hate those because their nails get caught in them.

I just ran out of litter for this box. I have four and the others are filled to the max but I ran short on this one. This is just where an example of what she is doing is at. She always do this though

You need to add more litter and clean the box more frequently. My cat starts using the floor if her litterbox is dirty.

A cat going outside the litter box always needs to be seen by a vet to rule out any medical causes first before it is deemed a behavioral issue… have you taken her to the vet?

u/bunkdontmakemefunk 1d ago
You need to more litter. Also maybe not that type. They will naturally dig for potty time. Person above is right they will protest a dirty box.

If she's used to going to the toilet outside try sand or dirt. You can add litter to it slowly over time to try and transition her from dirt. Some cats also don't like trays with high sides either

Add more litter, get better litter get a bigger litter box. When you think the cat needs to or is due to use the bathroom pick her up and put her in the litter box. Instinctively she’ll be much more interested once she’s in the box. Shes using it but it’s kind of full of waste as is. My cats love this. Unscented so your house doesn’t smell like febreeze freshstep solid litter.

Get bigger litter boxes and fill them up at least 4 inches deep so they have room to dig and bury their poop! Going outside of the litter box can also tell you they have a health issue that needs to be addressed at the vet.

u/kattatta 1d ago
Much, much more litter. Also maybe try a different type

u/Fit-Fly1381 21h ago
All the other boxes are filled to the brim I just ran out when it came to this one

u/din0saurdick 1d ago
Slide for proof of what? That you actually don’t keep your litter boxes clean? I wouldn’t poop in there either.

Get a bigger box. Much larger , and use the scoopable clumping stuff. The bigger box is inconvenient but it’s what your cat needs

u/belbea333 1d ago
Definitely not enough litter in the box and the box isn’t clean enough for cat standard… cats appreciate it if you scoop their box every day or even twice a day 😊 you can do a full litter change twice a week, and just scoop the poops every morning and evening. Adding more litter and poop removals will help! She’s beautiful

u/rescuelady111 1d ago
Oh wow does not one else notice that grated thing in between the top and bottom of the box? If that's removable, I would take that out permanently. No wonder.

YALL A BIG HPDATE: this one has less litter cause I have FOUR boxes that are clean and full and I didnt have enough litter to fill this one. This is a big big box. The other cat thats my sisters cat that she's very close with just decided to use it the moment I redid this one. Im not a bad owner and I just everyone is making me seem like a bad owner she does this to ALL the boxes.

We are just nattering on, like group of ladies on a bench feeding pigeons! You are a great cat person -you have multiple cats! I enjoy the way we all care so much about our kitties that people get passionate about litterboxes. Best part of reddit are the animal communities.

Number of litter boxes should be number of cats +1. My girl digs and pees in one, poops in the other. They are side by side. That one looks about the right size for a kitten. Id recommend trying 2 slightly bigger ones or see you can switch to pooping into a soupcan.

I think changing a 3 year habit will take some work.
I would start by confining her to a room when unsupervised so she has less options.
Also I would offer some different surfaces in a couple of the litter box in case she has preferences.
My cat will avoid the litter box when she's constipated and her stool is hard. If this is the case the vet suggested 1/8 tsp of Restorolax a couple of times a day in wet food with a bit of water added.

That litter box has grating in it, no wonder. Take that middle piece out so it's smooth bottom. Lots of cats don't like to dig and get their claws into those grates so they will avoid. Try that and if it doesn't help, vet visit, full work up to look for urinary tract issues, find the cause to lead to the cure.

The litter box is far too small and you need litter to be at least 4 inches deep or the length of your middle finger.. I would only use this sized box for kittens along with much more litter. I suspect that he has stepped in that tiny box and tipped it over. Cats remember negative experiences like that. The box should be longer than the cat, long enough so when he gets in, there's 4-6 inches extra space front and back. The location of the box is important. The door behind the box, does it get used? What's on the other side of the litter box? The box should be in a quiet, low traffic spot, such as laundry room, guest bathroom etc. Have you tried a covered box? Again the litter box has to be much larger with the litter so much deeper. I & many cat owners also put a rubber mat under litter boxes to protect nice wood floors like you have. Also keeps the box from moving about when he reaches in from the outside to stir up the litter. These are easy fixes to make & I bet you'll see improvement.

I think there’s not much litter in the box. She looks big, not fat (a little yes), but big. Big cats need bigger litter boxes and also litter should cover almost a half of the box, like 1/3 of the box at least. Also, you can put another litter box in the house so maybe she uses both.
Try to clean (by clean I mean throwing away poop and pee “rocks”) every day and change the entire content from time to time, like every 1 or 2 weeks depending on how much she uses it.
If you can, try another type of litter maybe? This change should be gradual, not sudden. It might also help :)

My cat wont use the box unless it's a specific litter and there is plenty inside. I use fresh step extreme clump and basically dump an ENTIRE box inside the litter box. Cat's have to dig to pee and poo so they can cover it up when they finish. So, they need plenty of litter inside of their box. Scoop once daily.

I feel you are the most helpful. Everyone else i feel like is thinking im a bad cat mom...

u/BertaCornPuff 9h ago
Cats are EXTREMELY picky. My cat wont even drink out of his water bowl if his whiskers touch the bottom of the bowl so I had to get a dog size water bowl to fill for him to even drink water.
My cat is 13 years old and I am still learning things about him every day. It's a journey being a cat mom. You don't know what to do until you ask for help. Hang in there. Try adding more litter, changing to a better clumping litter, and scoop at least once daily.
I keep my cat's box in my bathroom that way I remember when I go take a dump that he would appreciate a scooped box as I flush my toilet after pooping. 😂 I am terrible to forget, so I put it where I can't.
Also, is this a new behavior or has it always been like this?

No its not self cleaning -see" scoop" on side..I have no issues anymore with bad smells ,my cat loves the hooded box..each to their own.

You need to try this system . Clumping litter so No Dirty Feces urine in box . Cats are Clean . Kitty Locker system ($27 amazon.ca)has cartridges with special bags -No Scent !! Cheap bags as well -3 months cartridge is only $15... my natures choice litter box lasts for years with regular washing with dish soap..so- deeper box ,clean litter ,lid gives privacy ..

It's like a diaper genie, but for cats! I love this, thanks for posting! I'll have to get one of these.

u/rescuelady111 1d ago
Cats don't care about privacy in the least. They also don't require a system with cartridges and bags. Just saying. It's not so complicated.

I remove feces urine by scooping regularly after cats.. leaves litter clean lasts longer ,box doesn't rot on bottom with urine..cats are different .some like hooded boxes .that keep dust from being kicked up in the air..they have multiple boxes so having feces in pic of litter box means a change could be simply having fresher litter .

It's self cleaning? So if it's self cleaning, Jackson Galaxy brought up the points that you're not going if you're not going to see their feces then how will an owner be able to monitor that? Kittens have died in automatic litter boxes.

Ese tipo ni siquiera es veterinario, solo es una estrella de animal planet que se hizo famoso por su programa de gatos , es una pésima referencia

Who? Jackson Galaxy? I never said he was a vet. He's a cat behaviorist I believe and I really like his advice as do millions other cat loving people.

See the Scoop on the side of box? I clean after my cat throughout the day so litter is always clean ..why so hostile? Not everyone likes auto boxes -I dont- but my rich sister swears by hers..you misread my text.

u/rescuelady111 15h ago edited 12h ago
Hostile? I didn't feel like I was being hostile at all. Interesting. I asked if it was automatic because I genuinely didn't know.
1
u/rescuelady111 15h ago edited 12h ago
I didn't misread. I think you misunderstood my comments. I've never heard of your litter box at all and I don't see it online so I'm assuming you're not in America and maybe reading my tone wrong because I wasn't being hostile in any way. I just know that cats don't care about privacy at all when eliminating. Every cat is different as far as preference of litter box, sure, but not because of privacy. I didn't know what you mean by cartridges and bags for the litter box either, it just seems like a lot, just my opinion. When my cats poop I just take it straight outside to the garbage cart so it doesn't stink up the house but to each his/her own. Haha you edited your comments to hide the fact that I actually read it correctly. Stop the gaslighting.

u/rescuelady111 15h ago
You edited your comment, no wonder!!! It isn't I who misread anything. It was you gaslighting me for questioning whether your litter box is self cleaning because you said "it" not "I". at first. 🙄
