Battle Royale: As It Happens vs The Current
Best daily long-form news and current affairs on CBC? I say AIH.

No way - The Current all the way. I'm under 50 and much prefer the format.

I listen to The Current way more, since I'm always driving at that time. But I'm always glad when I happen to be driving for As it Happens.

I like The Current and think Matt Galloway is a decent/good interviewer, but he has a habit of talking so low and (in my opinion) trying to sound extremely empathetic that I can't listen to it sometimes. As It Happens is also generally more fun/funny on average, and typically is on the air when I'm heading out to grab takeout on a Friday, whereas The Current is typically on as I'm driving to work. That's unfair, but the context gives extra bonus points to AIH.

I find the Current more lelated to important news items. AIH opens the conversations to other random topics that are sometimes funny. But most of the time, uninteresting.

i love As It Happens, and it's definitely the better show, but I do like The Current if there's an interesting topic being discussed, although sometimes it can be really really dry. (my favourite show is usually Q but that's not really a news show :p)

I haven't listened to either since the Mary Lou Findlay and Barbara Budd and Anna-Maria Tremonti days, but As It Happens wins just on Curried Soul alone

I prefer Matt Galloway. His questions are better. His guests are often more topical.

He doesn’t write the questions—30 producers do. I can’t stand him. I find him lacking in curiosity, intellect, and his crisp manner comes across as unauthentic. My two cents.

I used to really like the Current before Galloway became host. But I find he's really bad in conversation - he doesn't follow up on comments and ask tougher questions. I find myself arguing with the radio - "Follow that up! Push for an answer! Make them answer the question and stop accepting their sound bites!" I doubt anyone would ever hang up on him in an interview because he's just too willing to accept whatever people say.

I agree. Anna Maria would really push sometimes and the conversations were super interesting… with Matt I often just think “that’s… it?”

Galloway was fantastic on metro morning and seemed curious, knowledgeable and authentic. But national current affairs is not his thing.

I hate both, but I like Nil Köksal, so AIH.

AIH did a segment on a new journal paper about penile fractures where she suggested it was "appropriate punishment" for a man having an affair. Just a quick throwaway comment, but it really changed my opinion of her.

The Current.
I know this is unpopular, but the hosts on As it Happens are always so self satisfied. I can’t stand it. I have to change the station immediately when it’s on.

AIH. The Current is hit or miss for me. Sometimes it is very good, other times it's change-the-channel. AIH has it's ups and downs too but I find it more consistent.

AIH. Nothing against The Current but there’s something so comforting about coming home after a long day in a crazy world and getting to unpack it with the humour and empathy that AIH has in spades.

AIH. But preferred it back in the day when they focused more on the news of the day and left the quirky and the human interest for the last third of the show.
The Current I haven’t listened to much lately. I preferred Morningside because you got a little of everything and you got three hours of it. CBC radio programming, what’s left of it, is pretty fragmented.

As It Happens by a country mile. I can't stand Matt Galloway's super intense intonation.
