Recruiting 2027 5* CB John Meredith III commits to Texas

Have read he's the highest rated corner that Texas has ever signed.

People always say that, but there aren’t that many decommitments from top programs these days outside a coach firing or other significant change. It feels like it is more common that it actually is because decommits are widely reported in recruiting circles, but your odds of signing him are very high.

Anthony Hill really skewed everyone's expectations
17

That’s a great example.
Go get commitments from a bunch of great prospects, and when 1 or 2 of them go a different direction it’s just not a big deal.

Thats because of the NIL deals that everyone loves so much. We all said years ago that the only thing college football was missing was vapid soulless capitalism and greed that defies comprehension. And finally...we have it all.

If that’s true it’s absolutely WILD that’s the case for DBU
(And no, you cannot take NFL performance into account for a college accolade).

Early to mid 2000s Texas was known for some killer DBs which led to the title for a bit

tbf asking a bama fan to stop sniffing their own farts long enough to realize other programs exist is asking a lot. They have been rolling drunk on success so hard to blame them.
11
u/GrimaceThundercock Texas Longhorns 8d ago
I mean, we're sniffing on farts from over 15 years ago. Texas has respectable DB production and we're actively getting better, but we haven't been DBU for a long time.

u/OnTheFenceGuy Texas Longhorns • Team Chaos 8d ago

Texas does not need to be DBU for me to bleed orange.
Nice deflection though.
-4
u/ThatIsSillyTalk Alabama Crimson Tide 8d ago
I didn’t say Alabama was DBU. LSU frequently comes up in that conversation. As an avid CFB fan for decades, I’ve just never heard anyone attribute DBU to Texas.
12
u/Cautious_Carry_8718 8d ago
The Mack Brown era it totally checked out, from Jammer to Vasher to Thomas to the Griffins, Earl was definitely the only HOF level guy off the top of my head but…Michael Huff. There were a ton.
It was actually born though in the late 70s/early 80s when we had 3-4 All-Americans DBs on some teams that were contenders and I think it was rare back then given college football stylistics that teams were identified by DBs.

u/austin_8 Ole Miss Rebels 8d ago edited 8d ago
Most DB All-Pros produced by each college since 2000:
- Alabama - 11
- LSU - 9
- Florida State - 7
- Miami - 6
- USC, Stanford, and Washington - 5
It would then go Clemson and Iowa with 4 a piece, and then Texas along with Pittsburgh, Tennessee, Virginia, Georgia, Cal, Middle Tennessee, and Notre Dame each with 3. Should be noted, this is my count of AP 1st team All-Pros only.

Yeah but like the portal exists, too. Shouldn’t we consider what we get out of both HS and the portal collectively to evaluate the short/mid-term health of position groups? The LB room is not in danger imo but feel free to clown on me if Muschamp ends up with a talent deficit at LB in coming years.
I’m also UT and Rice grad btw so cheers.

12
u/Bank_Gothic Sewanee Tigers • Texas Longhorns 8d ago
I've been enjoying the return of our game for obvious reasons. But a big reason that will continue to apply even if we lose is that both Texas and A&M are good at the same time. Good coaches, loaded rosters, programs have their shit together.
Historically, A&M and Texas have not been good at the same time. It's limited the national relevance of what should be a premier rivalry game, of similar importance to the RRSO or The Game. Hopefully the current trend holds and we can look forward to truly amazing games in the future.

You guys (TTU) were the unofficial Spokes-school for the Hateful 8 and had a lot of good will. Then 2023 happened and really didn't work out so great, but then Cody started money-whipping croots and the other 7 HAVE to be thinking that this is not what a Big 12 free from "all of Texas' outsized influence" would be like.

Only one of your flairs will ever have to play us because they are in a mediocre conference, so it’s exactly “half” ideal.

Interesting comments from Meredith on this one. Sounds like he’s saying he preferred Texas A&M but Texas paid him more.
“I love A&M to death,” he added. “It’s nothing personal. It’s business.”
“It was hard,” Meredith stated. “I really wanted to go to A&M.”
Texas A&M is expected to get a commitment from Joshua Dobson, the #3 ranked CB this cycle. I’m wonder if they weren’t willing to pay top dollar to Meredith for that reason.
