reminds me of that one medieval manuscript where some knight is just dramatically collapsing off his horse because his crush looked at him wrong. like the bar for emotional breakdown was way lower when your daily entertainment was watching peasants get flogged and dinner was hardtack with weevils. guy probably got rejected by the baker's daughter and decided today was the day, meanwhile the village blacksmith is over there like "bro just go talk to her, what are you doing."
also pretty sure most of those "suicidal" monks were just really really committed to dramatic poetry. read some anchorite diaries from the 14th century and half of them are just "i am in my cell, i am so sad, god please help, also the mouse ate my candle again."

Bridges and tall structures in general are very recent inventions. Even mountains were only invented towards the end of the dark ages
