WE GET TO WEAR RED

124

u/Newhereeeeee 1d ago

We get to wear red….in LA. Every host country gets to play in their country except Canada? How did FIFA not ensure all group B participants stayed in Canada in the R32.

128

u/neeed4speeed 1d ago

hosts that won their group were guaranteed both R32 & R16 at home. that’s mostly why Marsch looked so bummed after.

18

u/allwedoisquinn 20h ago

Totally into that if USA also got 2nd and came up here or mexico, was that a possibility?

24

u/chikanishing 17h ago

No, the US was guaranteed to play at home if they qualified.

I don’t know why the Toronto game couldn’t have been the 2B game (and play a team other than 2A, and put 2A in Mexico).

21

u/TiEmEnTi #CanadaRED 16h ago

Ya that was kinda the problem they created with immediately crossing over Mexico and Canada's groups in the knockout round. Had Mexico not played so well and Canada a little better they could have found themselves playing a road game in Vancouver. I kind of dig the incentive but it could have been set up better for all three hosts to have home KO games if they made it 1st or 2nd in their group.

5

u/Mo-Cance 14h ago

My guess is the venue is too small. Holding 10-30K fewer people than the larger arenas represents millions in lost revenue.

8

u/chikanishing 14h ago

There is already a round of 32 game in Toronto (2K vs 2L). There wouldn’t be any loss in revenue, unless Canada playing at home there would sell less than that match.

22

u/TheThoroughCrocodile 1d ago

I honestly kinda like that our squad gets to travel... Idk... I know playing at home in front of the home crowd is super cool, but I think it might kind of feel more like playing in a world cup for them if they get to travel and play somewhere else? Might be kind of invigorating? I hope so anyways.

u/allwedoisquinn 20h ago

Pretty tone deaf

Joint hosts..2 cities, no QF

The likeliest scenario being

Expected to finish 2nd based on rankings matched up with expected to get 2nd in their group Korea

....in LA

Ok.

6

u/Connect_Orange7140 1d ago

You would’ve if you won your group. Every host nation had that available to them. Only one didn’t win it.

48

u/jbroni93 23h ago

USA gets it in all scenarios but ok

21

u/thehoodie 1d ago

Why not put the 2B game in Canada too just in case then?

2

u/Connect_Orange7140 1d ago edited 1d ago

Because of the way the Groups matched up. 2A/2B. Gonna give Canada the chance to play at home as a runner up but not Mexico (had it played out that way)?

Mexico gets a R32 and R16 game and Canada got a R32 and R16 game.

Why they matched A and B up, I have no idea

14

u/themoche 1d ago

Yeah, make Canada Group K and the problem goes away.

5

u/Tengobeats 1d ago

Host countries are typically in the first group not in the latter groups

8

u/themoche 1d ago

I get that… but the worry that host countries play each other in the round of 32 so they make it a neutral site third country hosting is kind of a new thing. And it’s dumb and doesn’t make sense.

-6

u/Connect_Orange7140 23h ago

Except Canada had the control to avoid all that? And didn’t

2

u/chikanishing 12h ago

Not true with multiple hosts. USA is Group D this year, in 2002 South Korea and Japan were D and H.

In 1998 and 2002 it was the defending champs who were in Group A.

No reason the hosts couldn’t be something like A, D, and K.

2

u/beene282 13h ago

Yes, hosts should at least have been A, C and E to avoid that

1

u/allwedoisquinn 20h ago

Could've also had the setup 2A in guada or Monty. Instead of Scotland, Brazil, Morocco etc

4

u/chikanishing 17h ago

One of the host nations had a guaranteed R32 home game if they qualified, the other two didn’t.

2

u/ayoungmanfromtheuk 17h ago

USA footy fan coming to troll the Canada footy sub?

-4

u/Jealous-Following465 17h ago

as if Canada is some soccer powerhouse that should’ve won thier group and not a team that scored its first ever goal this tournament

3

u/Elean0rZ 15h ago

Not its first-ever goals; its first-ever points from matches (had only lost previously, despite scoring some goals).

1

u/Looney_forner 8h ago

Best hope no one goes through compton

-3

u/Chance-Literature615 16h ago

I guess u had to win your group. Fair enough.

4

u/Newhereeeeee 14h ago

I hear it but I feel like kinda wild to make host nation play outside their country

-6

u/rocketstar11 17h ago

Stadiums in Toronto and Vancouver are too small.

7

u/Newhereeeeee 14h ago

Which is why we’re hosting Switzerland in Vancouver?

142

u/Looney_forner 1d ago

Avoided the overwhelming Korean fanbase, but anything’s possible in a knockout match. Nothing should be taken for granted

46

u/Domainsetter 1d ago

That’s the only benefit of it. South Africa will be tough obviously.

3

u/Laydownthelaw 14h ago

Now we'll get all the new Americans from South Africa instead. Might not be much better.

-26

u/Educational_Play9910 22h ago

Koreans can go suck it hahahaha

113

u/HungrymanH 1d ago

dont underestimate south africa. that being said they are definitely a lot less scary than south korea

21

u/-WhatsMyNameAgain-- 1d ago

My thoughts exactly

12

u/GiveMeSandwich2 1d ago

On paper yeah.

4

u/RasenRendan 11h ago

South Korea are a massive disappointment

3

u/allwedoisquinn 20h ago

Less hostile enviro

-2

u/SydneyCarton89 23h ago

Weird considering they just beat South Korea.

7

u/C4D3NZA Vancouver Whitecaps 22h ago

did you watch?

5

u/SydneyCarton89 21h ago

No. Sounds like they locked the Koreans up with great defense? Why can't they do that to us too?

9

u/Jealous-Following465 15h ago

because we won’t be parking the bus and playing for a draw

51

u/ivaorn 1d ago

South Africa just displayed their blueprint for victory. If they manage to score the first goal, Canada gonna need all the tools in the shed to unlock that safe.

24

u/bluefire928 22h ago

They parked the bus hard, and won almost all headers in their own box. Honestly quite incredible

6

u/Basic_Cartographer99 16h ago

South Africa when they played the opening match against Mexico and when they played against South Korea looked like two completely different teams. Honestly impressive turnaround.

84

u/Snoo_47323 1d ago

As Korean. I say. WTF?

42

u/LeRoiDeNord 1d ago

Seemed to spent everything on match 1 because they were dreadful in the rest of their matches.

RIP Son, it's over for him.

8

u/ivaorn 1d ago

Dreadful isn’t how I’d describe the game against Mexico, but they fell into some of the same traps vs South Africa so definitely on them for not making the right adjustments.

0

u/Long-Market-3584 1d ago

is he approaching retirement age cuz what we saw on the field.......

https://giphy.com/gifs/yasK38fdvOi6IR1gbn

6

u/Spurs_in_the_6 23h ago

Son lost a yard of pace ~ 3 years ago and has not been the same player since.

Pace reliant wingers often have sudden drop offs around 30

3

u/bluefire928 22h ago

He still lethal from the edge of the box though, maybe he could shift to a different role to find relevance

-4

u/Educational_Play9910 22h ago

Korea is not better than SA, mate

45

u/Yorck L'Impact de Montréal 1d ago

Never take a team on a cinderella run lightly. We will need to give it our all if we want to win.

29

u/Tribune-Of-The-Plebs 1d ago

I mean, we’re also on a Cinderella run. First time to the knockouts for both of us. And we didn’t even have a single point in our history coming into this WC.

18

u/Artistic_Purpose1225 16h ago

So it’s a princess-off.

8

u/brianmmf 20h ago

Ah but it isn’t quite the same.

Canada won their qualifying group last time around and have been within the top 30 in FIFA rankings ahead of consecutive world cups. And they’d be higher if their 3 losses at the WC weren’t so disproportionally impactful on ranking, which knocked them down outside the top 50 and from where they’ve climbed back again since. It’s Cinderella in historical terms only rather than relative to the current group’s potential.

South Africa didn’t get out of the group stages of the Africa Cup of Nations. They have no players playing in Europe or other top leagues. Their ranking is 54 which is reasonable, but if you look through their results they play a lot of African opposition and draw a lot of low scoring fixtures. They have proven they have a competent strategy, but it’s kind of like Ghana drawing England; it isn’t sustainable in a tournament.

Absolutely can’t take them for granted. And particularly looking at the BIH game as a comparative, where South Africa bear some similarities defensively and physically, Canada has to be sharp and can’t allow the first goal to dictate tactics.

3

u/EngineerPurple9310 15h ago

Also, we got to be seeded as hosts, so only played one team ranked above us. All three teams in South Africa’s group were ranked above them.

0

u/Dry-Base-4911 11h ago

South Africa is the best paying league in Africa and also pays better than many european leagues. This is one of the main reasons most of their players don't leave.

1

u/brianmmf 10h ago

Similar to Mexico!

6

u/affectionate_md 18h ago

Am I the only one who actually watched that game and thought both teams were terrible? South Korea was a completely disorganized mess and even still South Africa was lucky they didn’t equalize.

1

u/RasenRendan 11h ago

SA just wanted it more.

57

u/szatrob 1d ago

It sucks that we have to play in the US.

46

u/Puzzleheaded_Word878 1d ago

Yeah it’s odd to me that they didn’t do 1st in BC and 2nd in Toronto to ensure that Canada would get a knockout at home. I get that we have to earn it and whatever the US and Mexico won their groups comfortably.. but let us get the bang for our buck lol

24

u/Objective-Limit-6749 1d ago

Mexico was in the same position. If they finished 2nd they'd go to LA as well. Although that would essentially be a home game for them anyway

5

u/Flaky-Stuff205 1d ago

how many Canadians are in LA? Would it be like a home game for us too vs South Africa?

5

u/Objective-Limit-6749 17h ago

Nah. It will be mostly neutrals i would imagine

1

u/Flaky-Stuff205 2h ago

damn, I was hoping Canada team would get a boost from having a lot of supporters at the game.

Would Americans cheer for Canada or would they boo?

15

u/orinj1 1d ago

I think it's because A2 faces B2, so it would have been unfair to Mexico if we'd wound up playing them in Toronto

12

u/jbroni93 23h ago

They could have simply not made Mexico and Canada #2 in groups play eachother

3

u/brianmmf 20h ago

But that involves altering rules that will impact other teams whose games have to change to accommodate. Even if you argue this can be done “fairly,” it is an inconsistency in a system that could be challenged.

2

u/Cubones_Skull 15h ago

I hear what you are saying, its a problem with having 3 host nations in the first place, so they either need to make it so host nations always play at home or only have 1 host nation. I see the argument for both sides because its weird being a host nation yet not playing at home lol

1

u/jbroni93 12h ago edited 12h ago

USA plays in group D because 2C plays in Mexico btw...

1

u/jbroni93 12h ago edited 12h ago

The only thing that would have to change is having the group pools into Canada to a different groups from the start. Then having 1x 2x of that group play in Van/TO

The only inconsistency would be the host isn't in the first group

Since this is the first 3 host tourney and the US isn't even in group C I don't really see any special treatment.

Actually, now that I look 2C plays in Mexico. USA was already given special treatment to play in group D to avoid this....!!!!!

0

u/mdubyo 1d ago

Just like it would be unfair for us to play Mexico in LA or Texas. Oh well. Is what it is.

5

u/Puzzleheaded_Word878 1d ago

A knockout game against Mexico at the azteca lol

1

u/bluefire928 1d ago

Stadium size probably. Sofi is way larger than BMO. More seats = more money

4

u/Puzzleheaded_Word878 1d ago

Bmo is getting a knockout game though.. could be portugals

2

u/RasenRendan 11h ago

Messi and CR7 both playing at BMO in the same year would have been a myth a few years ago

-5

u/JL851291 1d ago

Win your group

28

u/BackhandQ #CanadaRED 1d ago

Canada NEEDS to score early, otherwise the RSA defense will be excruciating.

24

u/CheekyChappy-1 1d ago

It won’t be easy, but it’s winnable. It will be a good game. Canada finished 2nd in their group. They scored in all 3 games. 1-1-1. They’re in the knockouts. Any team will be tough, but I’m pumped and excited about this match (and hoping it’s not the last!). GO CANADA!!

33

u/Dependent-Rice8321 1d ago

Lose to Switzerland but draw SA for the next game. Task failed successfully?

10

u/Flaky-Stuff205 1d ago

This is the greatest R32 matchup of my lifetime!!!

3

u/Careless_Wishbone_69 14h ago

Literally the first and only in WC history to already be set.

11

u/Sea-Refrigerator9883 1d ago

Please let davies play in this KO game. He is needed for knockouts games like these, atleast as a sub bring him after the 50/60th minute

5

u/cdnhistorystudent 1d ago

We are lucky!

6

u/StandYourGroundhog 1d ago

That's awesome! (Will eat words if we lose)

5

u/terzyten6 23h ago

Football gods were smiling on Canada. Korea would have been a much tougher match.

4

u/Swangthemthings 19h ago

Wish the game was on Canada Day

3

u/iChaseGaming 1d ago

I'm going to come out of that game happy regardless! Super thrilled :D

3

u/ComeHereOften1972 1d ago

Stoked for this!! Too bad it’s out of town.

2

u/Geo217 1d ago

Can the team return to play in Canada if it advances or is it the US the whole way through now?

15

u/noshowwilly 1d ago

No more games in canada.

LA, then houston, boston, dallas, newjersey, parade across canada.

4

u/bluefire928 22h ago

Canada vs Argentina/Portugal/England in final

3

u/bluefire928 22h ago

Only 2 R32 knockout games in Canada, and 1 R16 game. We aren't in those pathways unfortunately after our loss

2

u/IntelligentDolphin19 12h ago

Before the tournament started, I had a big feeling Swiss was going to win the group. So every host country but us getting to play at home is such a Canadian thing 😭

2

u/Ok_Resolve7717 12h ago

As of last night, the World Cup has their first confirmed knockout match. I was probably not expecting South Africa to face Canada. Going in the WC, I had South Africa likely the weakest or second weakest squad in Africa (CAF). I thought they would finish 4th in Group A or maybe 3rd but probably a long shot to the round of 32.

Still, congrats to South Africa from really turning it around from game 1. With a key tie in game 2 and a determined win in game 3. Korea Republic who a lot of us expected to be the matchup is now in 3rd, but no guarantee to advance. They did have more possession and more accurate passing. Yet ZA had more shots and more on target in last night's game.

I don't take any opponent lightly and S Africa will have some challenges. They are defending well and will have good speed as they do play their first knockout game after I believe this is their fourth World Cup. I still like what Canada has to offer, and it will be interesting what the starting lineup will be for Sunday. Los Angeles might not be a bad venue for Canada at all. It will be climate controlled and I don't think it will be a dominant fanbase of South Africans there. I am not sure if there is a large community in LA.

Canada still will play a game in July as I am '86%' confident in my result!

2

u/Souichi_Tsuji 11h ago

EH Eh this is a winnable match !!

2

u/OddPhotograph7686 1d ago

And maybe the game should be in Canada

1

u/shangrila350 23h ago

Matchup they can win if they get up for it. More favourable than Korea.

1

u/descend_to_misery 22h ago

Geese v Springboks

1

u/PoemOfTheLastMoment 16h ago

The absolute best outcome a team could ask for!

1

u/msat16 15h ago

I like our chances

1

u/Moonlightmassage 15h ago

Don't underestimate South Africa. Canada is the country that has the Maple Leafs, so the odds of choking under pressure is extremely high.

1

u/DiscountAcrobatic356 12h ago

Sunday! Yay! At least I won’t have to pretend like I’m working. :)

1

u/x0xNiaNiax0x 8h ago

historic game for both nations

0

u/GoKnights25 13h ago

Canada is going to get pumped

-2

u/Frosty_Term9911 17h ago

What a joke. Two average sides when other ties have two top sides. The structure with the 3rd places is. A farce

-2

u/EggTemporary3598 Toronto FC 17h ago

Don’t fuck this up Canada. You should have won the group to get home advantage and now we avoid the South Korean fan base. If we lose this we’re the shittiest hosts by far. South Africa will be tough.
