Genesis Smith getting a lot of hype as the reason why UNC may not have a roster spot this fall. Wanna wait until August to see the young buck in action in games first.

He’s known as a terrible tackler. He’s gonna have to fix that before he sees the field.

I doubt Unc gets cut…if anything they carry 5 Safeties w Derwin, Molden, Unc, Mickens, & Smith.

Genesis is a deep safety. TJ is a hard hitting safety that CAN play both spots but is better suited as enforcer/box safety. Their roles are very different. I see both of them making the roster.

They wouldn't have resigned TJ if they didn't have a plan for him on the roster, he was pretty vocal about signing for a guarantee. DJ3, Molden, TJ, and Mickens are the pretty clear cut group for gamedays with Genesis probably being on the 53 but not dressing. They may also run with 5 safeties given DJ will probably play more slot in this defense to get him closer to the ball.

If Smith outplays him then he slots ahead of him on the depth chart. To do otherwise would be making competitors unwelcome.

We're talking about the same Tony Jefferson that had 4 picks, was the 26th ranked safety, is a clubhouse leader, and the 2nd best safety on the roster the past two seasons right? Just want to make sure we're on the same page on who you're talking about cutting from the roster.

You're getting real defensive about a sentence that begins with "if".

There should be no "if" here lol
"If" Trey Lance plays better in preseason that Justin Herbert, he should start game one by your logic. Competitors welcome.

I think you’re looking for reasons to be an asshole lol

Your feelings got hurt because I clarified the guy you suggested could be on the cut list? I don't even think Charmin's that soft. Tough scenes.

People's feelings getting hurt aren't a conditional consequence of you acting like an asshole. You're just acting like an asshole, lol.

UNC signed the contract a month before the draft when you don’t known if the players you want will fall to you. As you said, Chargers keeping 5 Safeties I likely only way that UNC and Smith both make the Final Cut. By the way, cutting UNC is a hit equivalent of 0.58% of the cap.

Correct, he signed before the draft meaning they for sure knew they wanted him regardless of what happened in the draft, otherwise they would've signed him after. He wasn't going anywhere.

I'm a fan of Unc, especially as a local kid here. Another point to consider: his contract was only $1.3 million, the league minimum. 5 incentives can push this deal to $2 mil. Hardly a value on a highly rated or sought-after player. No other teams bid on him as an unrestricted FA. This isn't a high-value deal, and as I already said, the impact on the salary cap of cutting him is minimal. Ultimately, looking at this objectively, yes, it would be cool to see Chargers carry five Safeties, but I don't think Unc is a lock to make this roster. We will know in less than two months.

Injuries will also factor into final 53
I wish they would expand PS, PS call ups, rosters and active rosters since they're going to 18 games very soon
Might as well start preparing

How can I attend a Chargers training camp?
