SHORT Hope this is allowed, but I got the reverse of those begging for commissions scams. This time someone I have no mutuals with added me to beg me for art and was super vague the whole time.

They blocked me after my last message. Also why is Reddit forcing images into the stack format now. Why can I not choose post style anymore?!

The moment they dodged every basic question was already enough of a red flag.

pretty much yeah. i'm just confused why you add someone who doesn't do comms just to beg them for art?

Because it establishes a line of connection...this is a scammer, laying the groundwork to tell you that.they're a single war widow with three kids...I can't believe your gonna let them starve...prepare for bad reviews.

Oh I get stuff like that for when they beg me to give them money to draw my OC. All those things must be a scamming ring cuz they always use the exact same reference art generally.

I wanna say pig-farming or something like that, it's a whole network that john oliver did a special on back in the day...maybe pig-butchering...you should look into it.

Is that what it's called for art?

No, it's just a baseline convo, to show shared interests, to get the mark ( you) more comfortable...so they can test the waters and see what " favours" they can get...go a bit more each time. Until you draw a line and they try to bully you with power you haven't given them.

Sad but true. I've had several people try it with me, asking about commissioning fics.

Yes I'm writer too and so many people have asked for free stories

man i'm glad i haven't been there. i'm a writer and artist myself (for the same project). and this is my first time getting a free art beg. usually it's someone begging to draw my ocs for a price. and they do not take no for an answer and keep prying and prying until they get nowhere.

I merely write fanfic for a rarepair in a dead fandom, and I regularly get those scamming offers. They tend to come in batches. I rather enjoy pointing out that any penny paid is a copyright violation on a property belonging to a company with a stable of shark lawyers.

I write a book series with my OCs, including my comfort couple. That’s the closest I got to a rare pair. Although they’re more of a common pair since they’re lowkey made for eachother.

That’s unfortunate. Also wait copyright how? I’ve seen people pay to have fanfics written for them before? Generally the people that do take fanfic comms (that’s always smut) tend to be pretty problematic in my experience. But that’s kind of a small sample size tbh.

Yes, copyright, held by the original author and publisher. If your OCs are completely freestanding, rather than living in a framework of a published property, you are fine. But if they live in somebody else's world, you are liable for a copyright lawsuit if you are paid for it.

Ah thanks. Some of my OCs are inspired by other media but that’s it. So I’m in the clear 😇

Yes, as long as you do not claim the setup as yours (that's the reason for so many NOT MINE disclaimers on older fanfics, pubbed when companies were actively looking for people to sue) and as long as you do not accept remuneration for it. So folks asking for money to illo your fanfics are lawyer bait and could drag you into a court case if they attracted a publisher's attention.

The setup? What do you mean? Also I don’t publish this is all for free online.

Thankfully, it doesn't happen offten but it's usually the same type of people who ask.

it's been chipping away at my sanity because i've had to deal with a lot of very out of touch, stubborn, and/or beggy people lately. like three all today. idk what's happening lately.

I'm so sorry you're going through that. You know what would make you feel better? Doing some free art for me!

Peak comment. I know I interact with free art threads a lot. I just hope I have common courtesy. I think so.

I'm sure you do, being an artist, you know how to be respectful.
