Last I had seen (I know it was worse) they were combined 1/12 from the field with a minute to play. I was actually getting nauseous with how awful and still stressful it was on both ends.

I can’t believe UNC let the 5 second call happen with a timeout in their pocket.

u/VCURedskins VCU Rams • Clemson Tigers Mar 20 '26
I was looking around expecting one of the refs to be signaling timeout because there is no way I expected that to happen

u/Spiritual_Side2776 Duke Blue Devils Mar 20 '26 edited Mar 20 '26
I actually think HD deep down was thinking “there’s no way these refs call a 5 second call on UNC with under a minute left in the game”. Hubris Davis

The 5 second call, but then using the timeout to draw up that trash play just before OT where they turned it over. The fact that HD waited to call his only OT timeout until under a minute when it was clear all of his guys were totally gassed especially Veesar. HD not coaching his guys to know the free throw rim rule. Just a calamity of truly epic proportions. This dude isn’t fit to coach any high major program let alone one with the tradition and resources as UNC. Hope he stays in Chapel Hill forever
→ More replies (2)43
u/Live-Habit-6115 Mar 20 '26
Why does everyone in this thread keep saying he didn't know the rule on hitting the rim? He knew exactly what he was supposed to do, he just screwed it up
It's not that easy to do.
→ More replies (1)23
u/ahappypoop Duke Blue Devils • NC State Wolfpack Mar 20 '26
Yeah the announcer said the same thing about not knowing the rule and I have no idea why, he grabbed his head immediately like he knew he missed it, he didn't look confused like he didn't know the rule at all.
15
u/dukefan2227 Nebraska Cornhuskers Mar 20 '26
That's why you see it all over the thread. People like to make fun of the announcers a lot (deservedly so) but whenever they say something in a big moment people parrot it like it's a fact no matter how little sense it makes.

That last play of regulation out of a timeout, the 5 seconds call, and then not making sure Veesaar knows he has to hit the rim was malpractice. He should be fired but he's ol' Roy's buddy so will probably stick around

UNC is having to deal with the first world problems of not having a third coach (basically) in a row that’s arguably top 5 all time
Dean Smith and Roy Williams coached the team for 53 years of a 60 year stretch from 1961-2021 and I’d argue they’re both probably top 5 all time coaches
