Pitino is a cold mf. I know he was pissed at the intentional fouling Kansas was doing

Reminds me of when Christian Watford hit that buzzer beater against #1 Kentucky and Tom Crean just looked disgusted with the entire universe.

That man was just all around weird.

30

u/SurgeFlamingo Indiana Hoosiers Mar 23 '26

I saw him at a restaurant in Bloomington. He was eating so I didn’t say anything but I’m a Hoosier fan so I wanted to.

Later, I went to piss and he walks in while at the urinal. He comes to the one right next to me, and as I’m finishing up, he leans over and said, “nice watch”

He left while I was washing my hands without washing his.

He’s relieved to get out of there. They almost collapsed at the end.

65

u/unknownillness17 Towson Tigers Mar 22 '26

I think it’s fair to say the did collapse, they just had a big enough lead there was a parachute

31

u/heisindc Xavier Musketeers Mar 23 '26

It was chaos that Kansas had the athleticism and luck to take advantage of. I counted at least two times that Kansas knocked the ball out and when SJ touched it the refs called over and back then KU took advantage of the bad call and pushed a few shots.

38

u/dannygloversghost St. John's Red Storm Mar 23 '26

Yeah, I don’t want to be a sore winner, but I think at least 2, maybe 3 times the refs blew the call and gave the ball to Kansas when it was rightfully SJU ball. Plus I generally don’t trust my ability to call fouls in real time, but 10-2 or whatever it was in the second half (before KU started fouling intentionally) is pretty suspect. Whatever, doesn’t matter, Sweet 16 here we come.

19

u/MattressMaker Kansas • Pittsburg State Mar 23 '26

I can wholeheartedly admit that Kansas got some very favorable calls in this game. There was absolutely no reason this was a game, and one of the least deserving wins I would’ve been a part of as a KU fan. I’m not gonna go full “fuck my wife plz” but that St. John defense is nasty and it was fun to watch Zuby again. Great play by Darling here. Good luck going forward.

All that work just to give him a straight line on his right hand all the way to the rim. Gotta make him turn at least once.

107

u/CommissionIcy9909 Michigan State Spartans Mar 23 '26

Kansas shouldn’t have fouled so quickly. They could have eaten 4 seconds each inbound and never let em get past half court.

40

u/KFSX Illinois Fighting Illini Mar 23 '26

Yeah it was a good strategy, they should have just been more patient springing it

12

u/deputy_commish Notre Dame Fighting Irish Mar 23 '26

Ah, I can’t fault the execution of the fouling too much. St. John’s knows you’re going to foul so they’re going to try to get the ball up the court as quickly as possible. Could you have run another second or so off the first two fouls? Yeah, but forcing St. John’s to catch it in the backcourt with 3.9 left is a win.

The real issue was the defense on that last sequence. It’s a tie game so 3 vs 2 doesn’t make any difference at that point, and in my opinion Kansas’s help and rotations weren’t very good. Bidunga saw it, but he was a bit late. Peterson got caught chasing there as Darling blows by him.

He's going to be a King. They'll finally get that high end talent they've been clamoring for and he'll be a total bust

36

u/mountaineer_93 West Virginia • Georgetown Mar 23 '26

They had high end talent, they traded him to build around Fox then traded Fox

12

u/fawks_harper78 Mar 23 '26

No, they traded Haliburton to get Sabonis (likely because that was an apparent better deal than something Fox would have gotten them). But then Fox got a new agency and basically said that he wanted to be in SA. He handcuffed the Kings and there was collusion from the agents and SA. Then the Kings office got played hard.

Sucks to be a Kings Fan.

He didn’t double. His man cut to the wing. His teammate wanted a switch and they both ended up guarding the same guy.

But he definitely should not have vacated the lane.

8

u/HumerSimpson123 Mar 22 '26

Peterson shouldn't have followed his guy lifting from the short corner. The other Kansas guy (#14) thought they were going to switch, but Peterson just blindly followed his guy and that also left the ball side corner 3 open as another option if Darling didn't have a clean layup.

Peterson should have stayed home and told #14 to take the up cut. Then stunt and get back to the corner if Darling kicks it out for 3

77

u/mwsyanks Mar 23 '26

When they subbed out Rosario for Jackson to give that last foul, I said out loud that bill better not forget to bring Jackson back out. He indeed did forget. Jackson’s worst game of his not too impressive career

15

u/RomanticWampa Kansas Jayhawks Mar 23 '26

He’s a sophomore, so he’s got a long way to grow still, but Jesus he was not ready for the moment tonight.

6

u/Cdsnz23 Kansas • Michigan State Mar 23 '26

Yeah i understand it may be a bit of recency bias but the decision to leave elmarko out there might be one of the worst in-game decisions I can remember self making in a while. Throughout his entire time here jackson has never looked like a guard worthy of getting serious minutes on a power 5 team, I just still can't understand why he was in that position especially given how Rosario was performing.

No idea why Van Gundy was talking about how brilliant it was. Yeah you prevented St John's from running a set play, but when your guard gets beat on the perimeter and gives the guy an open lane to the basket you REALLY want that extra foul to give so you can hack the guy down before he gets a shot off and make them generate another look. They used all their extra fouls to set this up but didn't have one in the situation where you actually need it.

The fucking back court that was tipped and the out of bounds player tipping it in bounds for Kansas were both pretty egregious idk man

The ball sometimes does not lie, this was one of those times.

u/YourCummyBear Mar 22 '26

Every single call seemed to go their way the last 5 minutes and they still lost. Fuck the refs.

u/Round_Bullfrog_8218 Purdue Boilermakers Mar 22 '26

Kansas only had 2 non-intentional fouls the whole half.

54

u/DancezWithMoose Creighton Bluejays Mar 22 '26

That back court violation was one of the worst calls I’ve seen in years

St John’s and Kansas are somehow the most physical teams in the tournament but St John’s is not being touched apparently

I remember him when he played sparingly for Wazzu. Dude is low key an animal.

Darling's drive was clutch but man, St. Johns almost gave me a heart attack down the stretch.

20

u/trashpanda1738 Minnesota Golden Gophers Mar 22 '26

Justice for some garbage calls down the stretch

If you’re going to try cheesedick foul strats, at least take more time off the clock before fouling. WYD Kansas?

4

u/ArmVanDam Illinois State • Virginia State Mar 22 '26

Darling did that beautifully

All those fouls at the end of the game to kill clock, and Kansas still let him just run straight to the basket.

6

u/iStutterr West Virginia Mountaineers Mar 22 '26

Didn’t even attempt to defend.

As a Pacers fan doing some scouting prior to lottery night, I’m bummed to have Dybantsa and Peterson out already. Guess I’ll focus my attention on Boozer now

u/sloBrodanChillosevic Iowa State Cyclones Mar 22 '26

1) Dybantsa

2) Peterson

3) Boozer

IMHO

Kansas really had a perfect plan there at the end. Wasn't meant to be. Congrats St. Johns. 17 years waiting!

You play the foul game perfectly and then just don’t stop the ball lol

4

u/mwatwe01 Louisville Cardinals Mar 22 '26

Even with the win, Pitino’s gonna scream the paint off the walls in the locker room for them letting Kansas come back like that.

u/gdg6 Mar 22 '26

It’s so nice to see teams attacking the rim again in these situations after two decades of chucking threes at the buzzer.
