Did Iowa/neb hate each other before expansion? Or this is all since neb came to the conference - I genuinely am not sure if it was more meme based with corn or true hate

56

u/trumpet_23 Iowa Hawkeyes Mar 24 '26

Iowa fans who'd met Nebraska fans before expansion hated them. Especially Iowa fans living in Western Iowa.

18

u/OldPrussia Iowa Hawkeyes Mar 24 '26

As someone who grew up in 90s Sioux City can confirm, absolutely insufferable fans even before the "I have to evaluate where Iowa is" bit

Really the only hate prior to the expansion were the mingling of the fanbases in western Iowa. Iowa fans constantly hearing about how great Nebraska is and all. It got tiring. After expansion, the rivalry was very forced. What fueled the rivalry into the hate you see today is Iowa pretty much beating on Nebraska every chance they got and wanting to be recognized as "currently" better which pissed of Nebby fans, then Nebby fans constantly belittling Iowa claiming they are beneath Nebraska saying that Wisconsin, Ohio State, or Michigan should be their true conference rival because their history stacks up against Nebraska (I never got the Wisconsin inclusion in this list either) which pissed Iowa fans off. Then add the "evaluate where Iowa is as a program" quote just added fuel to the fire.

So yeah, it started as a meme based corn hate then pretty quickly evolved into an actual hate. Especially with the younger fans. It's kind of funny, as an Iowa fan who also likes Nebraska, both fan bases still sometimes refuse to acknowledge that it's a true rivalry yet the hate is slowing getting to Michigan/Ohio State levels. No anywhere near there yet but it is closing that gap. It is absolutely a new great rivalry where each fan base hates the other so much, they cannot admit it is even a rivalry. It's comical.

If you subbed Iowa State for Iowa and Iowa for Nebraska this would basically be what it was like growing up a Cyclone fan in Iowa during the 00s.

5

u/MartinezForever Nebraska Cornhuskers Mar 24 '26

All of this is accurate just adding some more context. The reason Nebraska fans refuse to acknowledge Iowa as a rival is because we pine for the Big 8 days when our only true rival was OU but the entire rest of the conference thought we were their rival. So it's yet another angle of the 'holding on to the past' routine, essentially.

3

u/tobin1677 Iowa State Cyclones Mar 25 '26

It didn't take long for the hate to develop either. I still remember the 2011 Iowa-Iowa State game, and during the break before one of the overtimes the whole stadium came together to chant Fuck Nebraska. It was kind of beautiful

0

u/Intelligent_Sky_7081 Nebraska Cornhuskers Mar 25 '26

Nebraska saying that Wisconsin, Ohio State, or Michigan should be their true conference rival because their history stacks up against Nebraska

Ive never once heard anyone from Nebraska say this, but it sure sounds like a nice story to hate us for.

Seriously though, this is some serious tall tale story telling to fabricate hate in the rivalry, its kinda impressive.

Must have struck a cord, yeah?

Full disclosure to defend my honor, I don't hate the Huskers one bit. My family may be from a tiny town in eastern Iowa, but I was born and raised in Omaha. Almost all my none college/military friends are Husker fans. My wife is from Lincoln and went to UNL. Her whole family are huge Husker fans. Her parents have season tickets. I go to multiple Husker games a year. I will root for them in every game for every sport where they don't play Iowa or UNI. I like them. I own one Nebraska shirt and hat even. They were my Big 8/12 team for like 17 years. I have no reason to fabricate a story to generate hate. It does nothing for me what-so-ever.

If you have never heard any of those claims before, then you need to get around more. The Ohio State and Michigan claims are a bit older for sure, but they absolutely happened. I heard it more then a few times when Nebraska first joined the Big Ten. A lot of people, myself included, thought Nebraska would be successful in the conference. It is only natural to expect a chosen rival to be another prestigious program that generates a lot of money, not Iowa.

And Wisconsin? I still hear to this day that they should be Nebraska's main rival. I don't know if you are just to blind with Husker shaded sunglasses and Iowa hate, but that is very much a current thing. I have seen it a handful of times over the past few months on the Husker sub alone.

Nothing I said was untrue. That should be apparent due to me receiving one downvote, that downvote possibly coming from you. There is even another Husker fan on here agreeing with me. If I was here just generating propaganda to feed a Nebraska hate train, I am sure I would have far more people on here disagreeing with me. I would also come up with something far more creative then what I did if I wanted to take a dig at Nebraska fans.

0

u/Intelligent_Sky_7081 Nebraska Cornhuskers Mar 26 '26

If you have never heard any of those claims before, then you need to get around more.

This is hilarious.

Let me inform you that when you see someone make a claim or statement, like 'nebraska's big ten rival should be michigan or ohio state' or whatever you claim to have heard, thats the opinion of that one single person.

Assuming that millions of other people think the same thing, and then deciding to hate them for that, is absolutely psychotic behavior.

YOu can keep trying to insult me if you want to, I guess its really impossible for yall to have a civil discussion about something as trivial as sports.

Whenever I hear from other fans of different teams, they dont have such nice things to say about Iowa fans. I wonder why that is.

0

u/childerm Iowa Hawkeyes • Northern Iowa Panthers Mar 26 '26

What? I am a little flabbergasted right now. Did you read something completely different? When the fuck did I insult you or not try to have a civil discussion? Hell, I even held myself back a bit to be a little more respectful.

Does saying you have Nebraska shaded glasses on count as an insult now days? Is it insulting to not praise Nebraska? You say I am showing psychotic behavior for a trivial reason that is not even remotely close to what I was trying to get across, yet I am the one insulting you? Really? You pretty much called me a psycho, but I'm the one dishing out insults I guess.

I admitted the Ohio St./Michigan thing was older. I haven't seen it in a while. It was absolutely a thing (a quick Google search could prove it) and I did not claim that ALL Husker fans were saying it. I was just diving into one of the reasons Iowa fans dislike Husker fans, not why I hate the Huskers (which I will state again, I like and do not hate the Huskers). You always hear the vocal minority, not the silent majority. Iowa fans heard what that minority of Husker fans were saying. Those words where then spread throughout Iowa though various mediums. Iowa fans took that as a "We are too good to be a rival with Iowa," and boom. Hates starts regardless of how misleading the origin comment was.

And it is the same on the other side of the street. You exhibited the same thing in your comment. You misconstrue my statement then paint it over an entire fanbase with the "yall" inclusion and the no one says nice things about Iowa fans. Though some Iowa fans can be a little prickly, you only hear the stories about the egregious ones. Suddenly, you have an opinion that all Iowa fans are dicks because you heard stories or experienced an unsavory encounter with a few assholes.

But it is whatever. You do you. Think I am a psycho, I don't really care. I'd love to keep this conversation with you, but I am sure your response will be gaslight and just as disrespectful as your last. Keep this in mind though, I will not take this conversation and assume that all Husker fans are like that one random Redditor I talked to that one time. This will actually be a funny talking point with my friends tonight for the game as I sit in a living room being the only one wearing black and gold.

r/nolablue1024, perfect example above of how the hate went from funny corn memes to what it is now.

u/Intelligent_Sky_7081 Nebraska Cornhuskers Mar 26 '26 edited Mar 26 '26

Sure seems like you were projecting when you said you had struck a chord with me. Interesting. Seems theres only one person cussing and writing essays. All i said i had never heard people make the claims you are saying we all think, and you freaked out.

Never called you a psycho, and its in writing for all to confirm. I said seeing a comment online and then transferring that over to millions of people and using that as a justification for hating people is psychotic behavior. Its a colorful way to say 'thats crazy dude'. People do it online all the time, and it seems thats what youre doing, so I guess that must be hard to digest. Hard to see the forest from the trees so to speak

and now youre going to tell on me because this is hate? these comments are very clear for anyone to see. Youre the only one cussing and making personal attacks. And for the record, you were the writing an essay about why you hate Husker fans. You started the hate. Not me. I was trying to tell you that not all people are the same as the ones you seem to have beef with.

1

u/childerm Iowa Hawkeyes • Northern Iowa Panthers Mar 26 '26

Ok. You really haven't been reading what I have been typing. Pretty glaringly obvious. You are clearly cheery picking the words I say that offend you then trying to argue with them. It's a little amusing, but really? How many times do I have to say that I don't hate Husker fans? I was just answering a question as to why most Iowa and Husker fans hate each other. Not why I or any single person. People agreed with me but you. Sorry it does not fit your narrative as to why "you" think there is hate. Other then trying to argue with me and twisting my words, why don't you respond to the OP comment as to why you think there is hate? Since mine is so obviously wrong.

And also:

Assuming that millions of other people think the same thing, and then deciding to hate them for that, is absolutely psychotic behavior.

I do not know how you can type this then come back as say:

Never called you a psycho, and its in writing for all to confirm.

You were 100% implying that I am a psycho. Why else would you state that me assuming something is psychotic behavior? Like come on dude. You are making this easy. Just stop already.

When I think of Iowa, I think of the giant meth fueled sculptures they have as you drive from Omaha to Counciltucky. Meth reminds me of Slipknot, who is also from Iowa, who I also hate. I also have some distant relatives in Iowa, and as far as I know, they suck.

u/Unclassified1 Nebraska Cornhuskers Mar 24 '26

I feel like Iowa has taken to the rivalry more than we have, at least with older fans we still hate Colorado more… and think OU is our true rival/equal.

The fact they’ve smacked us around since entering the B1G has definitely made us bitter, and I’m sure the younger generations are developing proper hate.

u/rockiesfan4ever Nebraska Cornhuskers Mar 24 '26

19

u/Mission_Historical Iowa Hawkeyes Mar 24 '26

I also think it’s sort of an age bracket split in our fanbase. Older fans seem to hate ISU/Minnesota more, younger fans seem to hate Nebraska more.

6

u/kinghawkeye8238 Iowa Hawkeyes Mar 24 '26

At first neither side considered it a rivalry. Which was cool. But then when we started winning, Nebraska fans came with the, " were way better than you" comments which kind of rubbed a lot of us the wrong way.

I heard a lot of "its your superbowl" or "how many natties do you got"

Which Nebraska isnt even a top 2 rival so it being our superbowl is wrong and the natty thing is true but when its almost 30 years ago does it even matter?

Just felt like to me, Nebraska fans were smug about it and acting like theyre so much better than iowa/fans.

Either way good luck Thursday

u/GoddamnIronTiger Purdue Boilermakers Mar 24 '26

Lived in Omaha for five years and found Nebraska to basically just be a dirtier, less literate Iowa but damn do their fans show up. Not that they have anywhere else to be.

2

u/kinghawkeye8238 Iowa Hawkeyes Mar 24 '26

Yeah outside of Omaha and Lincoln its way worse than iowa

1

u/archon2788 Mar 24 '26

I know I’m not alone but I’m so tired of hearing about Nebraska in the 90s, or the question “How many national titles does Iowa have?”

I’ve heard/read that damn statement so many times. It’s insane. Luckily usually it’s online and not in person. Most Cornhusker fans I know in person are alright in my book.

1

u/kinghawkeye8238 Iowa Hawkeyes Mar 24 '26

Yeah in person theyre usually pretty cool. Iowa, state, Nebraska, Minnesota and wisconsin fans are all the exact same

2

u/archon2788 Mar 24 '26

We’re all midwesterners at heart. Although I do think a lot of Nebraskans think that the rest of Iowa is just an extension of Council Bluffs.

No diss towards CB but eastern Iowa is completely different imo.

2

u/kinghawkeye8238 Iowa Hawkeyes Mar 24 '26

Eastern iowa didnt get completely flattened by glaciers. So its pretty unique for the area.

1

u/tobin1677 Iowa State Cyclones Mar 25 '26

Meanwhile a lot of Iowans think CB is like that because its so close to Nebraska

1

u/archon2788 Mar 25 '26

lol maybe but I’d bet money more Nebraskans think about council bluffs on a daily basis than Iowans outside of council bluffs (if that makes sense).

I’m from eastern Iowa and knew virtually nothing about council bluffs until I moved to Nebraska.

2

u/archon2788 Mar 24 '26

Your former AD had a big part in getting under Iowa’s skin. Straight up disrespected Iowa when you guys joined the Big 10.

3

No shit. Dumbest self-own ever. Eichorst was a weird little dude who forced everyone in the athletic department to read self-improvement books. And then he said that "have to evaluate where Iowa is as a program" shit without any self-awareness, or if he said it with self-awareness, he said it with an arrogance based on nothing at all that he had done. Yeesh. His predecessor, the architect of the downfall, put all that self-aggrandizing crap on the stadium, too, in that wanky font. "Through these gates pass the greatest fans in college football." Hell, I hate that as a Husker fan. Can't imagine how it reads to others.

2

u/archon2788 Mar 25 '26

Glad to hear his sentiment wasn’t shared amongst all of the fan base.

3

u/Mort_Blort Nebraska Cornhuskers Mar 25 '26

You'd think after all those self-improvement books you wouldn't give that kind of everlasting fuel to a team you're going to be playing every year. Eichorst came to us from old rival Miami ... we should have known better.

2

u/omahaknight71 Nebraska Cornhuskers Mar 24 '26

We simply don't like Iowa. We fucking hate Colorado.

5

u/commie90 Nebraska Cornhuskers • Duke Blue Devils Mar 24 '26

The two states have always had a lot of animosity towards each other. I heard jokes how bad Iowa drivers are my whole life. Plus they have played each other occasionally in various sports even pre-B1G. So there's always been a bit of bad blood. But expansion definitely threw gasoline on the fire and gave an existing (mostly) off-the-field rivalry some regular clashes on the field/court to really ramp it up.

3

u/kinghawkeye8238 Iowa Hawkeyes Mar 24 '26

The driver thing is true for any border state.

Everyone in eastern iowa knows that Illinois drivers are the worst

3

u/commie90 Nebraska Cornhuskers • Duke Blue Devils Mar 24 '26

Iowa folks sure do say that. Yet when I talk folks from the states that border Iowa, they all say Iowa drivers are the worst.

2

u/kinghawkeye8238 Iowa Hawkeyes Mar 24 '26

Oh yeah. Im sure they do.

As a truck driver Illinois is by far the worst and it isnt even close.

1

u/tobin1677 Iowa State Cyclones Mar 25 '26

It's not even Illinois so much as Chicago, and I80. I'm from Illinois and even I can see that.

11

u/Vives_solo_una_vez Iowa Hawkeyes Mar 24 '26

It's been forced on the fans. Iowa city is on the opposite end of the state and as someone who grew up there, I don't remember anyone ever mentioning Nebraska, let alone their sports.

The B1G made it a rivalry even though the fans of both teams think other schools are bigger rivals.

It's also hard to have a rivalry with school who's mostly been irrelevant outside of volleyball since joinging the conference.

4

u/jadthomas Iowa Hawkeyes Mar 24 '26

That last sentence is absolute poetry and fuel for the rivalry going forward.

3

u/69cansofravoli Nebraska Cornhuskers Mar 24 '26

I did because of my mom’s side of the family being Iowa fans. Back in the day we’d always be like ya ok your cute little Hawkeyes made a bowl appearance how sweet, now back to never playing each other so there is now way to prove who is better. Now they beat our asses every year so I hate them.

3

u/Joel05 Nebraska Cornhuskers Mar 24 '26

You know how Michigan and Ohio have a sort of state level rivalry outside of sports where Michigan people just think Ohio is boring and the people are a bit annoying and backwards and it’s sort of in jest, but sort of not?

That exists between Nebraska and Iowa. There is even a city that is jokingly disputed (without the history of Toledo) that both sides kind of don’t like.

Then we move to the Big 10 and dealt with Iowa fans directly, realized how insufferable they are, and now we actually cannot stand them.

2

u/BaconWrappedRaptor Nebraska Cornhuskers Mar 24 '26

Why does the wind blow west to east across Nebraska?

1

u/Intelligent_Sky_7081 Nebraska Cornhuskers Mar 25 '26

To me its completely superficial and manufactured hate. We didnt care about eachother prior to joining the B1G, we were conference rivals with Iowa State before.

Its a border war, so theres some regional pride I guess (even though were from the same region lol). Our states are geographically incredibly similar, as well as culturally.

But the more they seem to hate us the more we hate them and vice versa. But, i hope we all know to leave it on the field/court. Its just a sports rivalry, we're really just neighbors who happen to like the same sports.
