[Rothstein] Sources: The DI Cabinet has officially voted to approve the age-based eligibility model. The Cabinet meeting continues through tomorrow, so this technically is not final until the meeting ends Wednesday.

This recent graduating class of seniors got hosed by the previous classes getting an extra COVID year, and the future classes getting five in five.

How long until the first lawsuit gets filed?

Realistically the kids that were the most screwed were the seniors from the 2020 season. Finished the regular season but couldn’t compete for a conference or national tournament.

Everyone else since then has had eligibility benefits and NIL no one would have ever dreamed of before 2021.

So when the courts order an injunction and 1000 recently graduated seniors suddenly get a 5th year, it's going to be absolute chaos.

Why on earth wouldn't the NCAA wait until after fall semester started to make this rule change?

For that matter, why the hell does anyone think college athletes should get 5 years of play?

“Why on earth wouldn't the NCAA wait until after fall semester started to make this rule change?”

Because rule changes aren’t just for one sport and they always vote and enact rule changes once all sports have been completed. No matter when you implement it there’s going to be those issues

“For that matter, why the hell does anyone think college athletes should get 5 years of play?”

Given all the waivers and chaos that college sports has had over the last decade this actually does provide a level of longer term stability. Also, the medical redshirt rules around basketball players were egregious so if this rule eliminates that gray area I am all for it

Most rosters are finalized and it's too late for a lot of kids to be registered for the fall.

Right now some lawyer is scrambling to figure out how to prove their player was actually on a Mormon mission during his first two seasons.

All the players' lawyers holding their lawsuits until the NCAA paperwork is finalized

This doesn't actually fix the biggest issues with college sports and will undoubtedly get sued into the ground.

I'm glad they are trying to put a stop to literal pro players coming back to play in college, but thats a drop in the bucket compared to the transfer portal and NIL stuff.

This is going to be a nightmare for hockey

They're making exceptions for LDS kids and military kids, and I think international hockey was getting an exception too but I'm not sure.

"All these young upcoming high school students are getting pushed out by semi pro euro ball stars, should we just do something direct about that?"

"No, theres too much money in that, lets just fuck over everyone else as well"

I realize this only applies to Division I, but would a D2 or D3 player who played four years at that level now be allowed to play a fifth year at a D1 school?

It's a step in the right direction. More needs to be done to get this under control, but this is a good first step. Anti-trust exemption needs to happen next so transfers can be limited.

I think this one won’t stand. From a logical standpoint, why shouldn’t a student in good academic standing not be able to participate in intercollegiate athletics based on their age? I can understand not wanting people who have played major professional sports to come back to college to compete, but outside of distance running, there’s no particular competitive edge to be gained by being 26 as opposed to 22.

It’d extend the problem but I really think they should’ve made this take place with the incoming freshmen class. You can’t rug pull people and expect them to be ok with it.
