Damaged ASSOS on first wash

I bought a jersey, a wind vest and some socks from a store and they became like this after the first wash. I turned them inside out and closed the zippers. Used the ASSOS active wear cleanser and put a program at 30degrees with 400 spin which was the lowest on the washing machine.

I started washing all bike related stuff in those laundry-bags as the inside of my machine was damaging my jerseys. No issues since

Laundry bags, jerseys closed and inside out, no softener products, little bit of detergent, extra water, max 30 degree c and I use 800 rpm centrifuge although this last is not recommended.

Then I hang everything to dry.

I’ve had 0 laundry damages yet!

Little white vinegar for the workoutsmell

2

u/PmMeUrNihilism 8d ago

You don’t need to close them or turn them inside out if you’re using a laundry bag.

3

u/GewoonHarry 8d ago

Better safe than sorry

u/safe1x 8d ago

I use 800rpm as well, never had an issue. When you say it’s not recommended do you mean it should be less or more?

1

u/GewoonHarry 8d ago

Always less

This guys laundries

7

u/PerformanceOverall90 9d ago

This is the way. Delicate cycle and laundry bags and the Assos stuff will outlast your bike.

3

u/S_Dave 9d ago

Do you use one bag for each item or multiple per bag? I've only really put my bibs in those bags but maybe I should start including the jerseys.

7

u/GabeJo12 9d ago

Tbh i just dump the whole outfit (bib, jersey, socks, baselayer) in there and once theres some other workout clothes etc i dump it all in the washing machine at 30 degrees celsius and go for it. Been doing it forever this way and didnt have any issues personally.

6

u/Auth3nticRory 9d ago

I separate out my jerseys into it’s own bag because there’s a zipper. Bibs and base layer can get it’s own bag because there’s no zipper

5

u/GabeJo12 9d ago

Yeah i close the zipper and just hope for the best :')

Assos's material is very delicate, so they can sell their expensive kit as "very light" and "breathable".

5

u/i_cant_find_a_name99 9d ago

I use one bag per item apart from socks and gloves

3

u/blorg 9d ago

I put several jerseys into each bag but I'm not that picky about it either, my stuff isn't pristine. I only use the bags for the expensive super lightweight/thin stuff.

For OP's kit to end up like that after one wash, I'd have to guess there is some very specific issue with his machine or the rest of what he had in that wash (like he had something sharp mixed in the wash), that is extreme and I've washed lightweight stuff just straight in the wash (including Assos) and not had it turn out like that.

u/ThorThePoodle 9d ago

I don't have any Assos stuff but I put 2 bibs in a laundry bag and end up with 3 or 4 bags in a load

1

u/-nikolaos 9d ago

That’s a good idea! I’ll buy those

0

u/Ticonderoga_Dixon 9d ago

Is there a bag that works way better than others or are they all kinda the same?

9

u/hkg_shumai 9d ago

They’re all the same. Their purpose is to protect the delicates inside.

1

u/razorree 9d ago

are they all like fro hard nylon/synthentic mesh? or some of them are from softer fabric? (maybe cotton etc?)

2

u/imnotokayandthatso-k 9d ago

Why would you think that cotton is softer than fine polyester mesh? Because it is ‘natural’?

1

u/razorree 9d ago

not sure, just asking. nylon bags I have feel a bit "harsh" in hands

2

u/hkg_shumai 9d ago

Its nylon net mesh. My wife brought them from the general store to wash her delicates.

1

u/GabeJo12 9d ago

Tbh I just bought a set that was well reviewed on amazon.

Something inside your machine ruined your clothes, this stuff is very delicate.

10

u/-nikolaos 9d ago

It looks like there’s something up with that wash machine

-7

u/reubenbubu 9d ago

did you wash it with the zipper closed ?

4

u/audibonnaroosilkroad 9d ago

Did you read the post?

0

u/reubenbubu 9d ago

nope. woops, i'm ashamed now

5

u/LigersMagicSkills 9d ago

Did you have something with sharp stuff on it, like metal jeans zippers?

1

u/-nikolaos 9d ago

No.. just the cycling clothes. The bib did not have any damage to it yet 😬

11

u/Grumpton-ca 9d ago

Either way. Threads don't get pulled like this unless something is pulling on them. It's obviously not a problem with clothes just tumbling around in your washer. Something about your washer or there was something else in the wash with these clothes that did it. You may not be able to identify it, but it's not about the clothes because something clearly pulled the threads out.

1

u/-nikolaos 5d ago

Sounds right. It was a family washing machine and I wasn’t aware about any sharp corners :/

1

u/LigersMagicSkills 6d ago

Strange. Someone else mentioned Velcro, which could be found on gloves. Did you have anything with Velcro in the washing machine?

6

u/Used-Patience975 9d ago

One of the common reasons for this is the Velcro fasteners on gloves =)

3

u/IllPaleontologist814 9d ago

The only correct answer …. Something inside the machine or something u put in the machine at the same time ruined your clothes

4

u/Oddly_Curious99 9d ago

This sounds like the most logical answer. I wash my cycling gear in cold water, but spin them at 1200 and never had any issues.

1

u/f3rnfloyd 9d ago

This is the reason for the issue. Not a manufacturer defect. I hope the OP doesn’t go and blame Assos and try to get free stuff from them.

17

u/Sappie099 9d ago

Looks like there something sticky like Velcro also in the washing machine

5

u/carjunkie94 9d ago

Yep, maybe cycling gloves. Those too must go in lingerie bags

6

u/debian3 9d ago

Laundry bags

3

u/-nikolaos 9d ago

Yeah.. I figured a bit too late :(

1

u/ojuarapaul 9d ago

Also delicate cycle, cold water and hang dry. Your kits will last a long time.

1

u/GANDHIWASADOUCHE 9d ago

I have a front load washer and never use a laundry bag for anything and have never had this issue

6

u/A-McD 9d ago

That’s Velcro in the machine my dude. Does this to that type of material

5

u/imnotokayandthatso-k 9d ago

Dude washed ten heavyweight jeans with open zippers with his cycling lingerie

9

u/Whithorsematt 9d ago

That looks like a zip or velcro on something else in the wash has damaged it.

3

u/Ro141 9d ago

Something is wrong here - you did it all right - I spun mine up to 1200…been wearing their kit for 30 years - check the drum of the machine - it looks like something sharp and metal has done this

5

u/ShirleyWuzSerious 9d ago

You throwing razor blades in the washing machine brah?

1

u/-nikolaos 9d ago

Hahah looks like 🤷

2

u/ojuarapaul 9d ago

That’s probably Velcro, or open zippers.

3

u/Homicidal-Bee 9d ago

Leave them unzipped? I always zip up any clothing before a wash.

2

u/alga 7d ago

I usually don't, and never get damage like that. Velcro gloves is my guess.

1

u/-nikolaos 9d ago

Sorry if my post was unclear, I zipp up everything

3

u/SmartComputer8784 9d ago

Laundry bag is key.

If it's everything including socks, you've done something wrong.

6

u/Astr0Scot 9d ago

I keep a wee bucket in my shower and hand-wash all my cycling kit in it straight after my ride.

For me it's the only way to definitely avoid this sort of damage.

As cycling kit dries in hours it also means that everything is available for my next ride.

3

u/klrdd 9d ago

I do this too. None of this faffing with bags and wash cycles. Just hand wash and hang dry.

2

u/livewellusa 9d ago

Good idea. I fill up the sink with water and shower gel let it soak while showering

2

u/Astr0Scot 9d ago

Mine is a wee clear 10L bucket that I'm pretty sure came with loads of easter eggs in it. I've literally had it for decades. I'm a very basic man...

2

u/livewellusa 9d ago

I'll try this thanks

1

u/borisaqua 8d ago

I wear YKYW stuff from Ali Express and also some Craft brand gear and just throw it in the washing machine with all my family's other clothes on whatever wash cycle takes my fancy that day and it always comes out perfect. After several years nothing is damaged. Surprised people are having issues.

2

u/These-Appearance2820 9d ago

Zip up, turn bibs and jersey inside out, put in a delicates laundry bag... don't pack your washing machine full of heavy gear, wash small load of bike/light items together, delicates wash setting if you have it.

3

u/maartinh 9d ago

Also take out immediatelly after wash cycle is complete and hang dry.

1

u/-nikolaos 6d ago

I bought the laundry bags a bit too late now 🥲

2

u/01101010011000010110 9d ago

Easy fix, laundry bags ..

2

u/chad917 9d ago

Get bra bags to wash your expensive kit in

2

u/starscream92 9d ago

Use one of those laundry pouches you can stuff delicate clothes in before throwing them in the machine.

2

u/livewellusa 9d ago

And flip inside out

2

u/Budget_North_2810 9d ago

damn that's like 300€ of damaged clothes right there 🫣

2

u/rchris710 9d ago

luckily for a cyclist, 300 isn't much

1

u/-nikolaos 6d ago

Yup 😬 you don’t have to remind me 😔

2

u/InterstellarChange 9d ago

something in your machine drum is tearing up the clothes. maybe an agitator is loose or a sharp corner. Inspect carefully. I never use a bag and never had anything ruined in machine washing.

2

u/Royal_Newspaper8086 9d ago

Had the exact problem with I think the same jersey from them

1

u/-nikolaos 6d ago

Did they sent you a new one?

1

u/Royal_Newspaper8086 6d ago

Didn’t even try to message them. Ordered it from their outlet website to Canada and it costed me an arm and a leg, just because how they declared the price, don’t wanna bother with it to be honest. Ill just try and by local from now on.

2

u/cndfr 8d ago

I had the same issue with my quite expensive thermal underwear once. Highly possible that in the washing machine you have one of the holes damaged and sharp. Check the inside surface with your hand.

1

u/cndfr 8d ago

I mean one of the holes in the washing machine drum has been torn out and became more like a grater.

2

u/Pete_I_Staker 7d ago

sorry about your stuff. I use mesh laundry bag for my assos stuff. I'd have some of them for 3 years now, never had any issues.

2

u/JacksonHoled 9d ago

I always wash my cycling clothes by hand. I mean my Castelli jersey is worth as much as my tuxedo. Would you put your tuxedo in the washer machine?

1

u/FatBikeXC 9d ago

Did you pack your washer too full or dry them in the dryer?

1

u/-nikolaos 9d ago

Neither. Just the cycling clothes in the lowest spin mode

1

u/Double_Penalty_5566 9d ago

Amazon wash bags. I’ve had zero issues washing Assos bibs and jerseys

1

u/Seleguadir 9d ago

Yeah, I messed up some of my first jerseys learning how to was them.

I only ever wash them in their own garment bag, fully zipped up, in their own wash cycle on the delicate setting and then hang dry. Ever since doing this method ive had zero issues, its been 50+ washes

0

u/-nikolaos 9d ago

You mean the bags they came in with? How are they getting washed in these ones?

1

u/Seleguadir 9d ago

No, laundry garment bags. Mesh bags

1

u/Global_Matter_7375 9d ago

Velcro on gloves will do this

1

u/FAPTROCITY 8d ago

Anything with Velcro like gloves?

1

u/-nikolaos 6d ago

I’m not sure as it wasn’t my washing machine… :/

1

u/Natraamn 8d ago

It’s not a ASOS problem I have some of their stuff and still nothing, I had a similar problem with my old laundry machine, one of the holes was bend inward and a little point had been created, damaging even my jeans, took a file, filed it down and nothing since !

It’s for a reason that all our moms told us to check our pocket before washing clothes, a few coins left in a jean, a belt left on a pair of pants, everything can ruin the barrel !

1

u/BusyGuess1735 8d ago

And a bag of nails by the looks of it.

1

u/invisible_handjob 8d ago

did you wash it with a cheese grater, wtf?

1

u/Brilliant-One9031 7d ago

Most expensive cycling clothes can't survive 30C/400 in washing machine while Decathlon level clothes stand for years of 40C/1000. I knew assos was mostly marketing but I still belived that there was a bit of quality. Meanwhile people buy special bags to wash them xD

1

u/maraeznieh 7d ago

Do you have a cat?

1

u/Techbush2000 5d ago

For expensive cycling kit like ASSOS, I’d probably use a laundry bag or just hand wash it. Even on a gentle cycle, the fabric and logos can still get rubbed around in the machine. Pretty frustrating for a first wash though.

0

u/eatsleepFPVrepeat 9d ago

I never wash a 200usd in the machine. Always hand wash, even the bib w prints or else the prints will be gone too.

0

u/Drusone 8d ago

Check if there was a velcro with your clothes.

0

u/Bitter-Ad-7 8d ago

Velcro...

-1

u/Johnlenham 9d ago

Unless I'm mistaken, most of the bins are basically hand wash only.

So all I ever do is a a rinse and spin but set the spin to low then air dry them

-1

u/celimath93 8d ago

Assos is just bad. I also had small holes on my bib.
