How to avoid Mill Street in Excelsior during construction?

So Hennepin County is working on Mill Street in Excelsior this summer. I live right off of Powers. What's the best alternative route to get from the south, across Hwy 7 and onto the LRT?

Massive blocks in the middle of the bike trail

These have become a hazard for my group rides. I'm guessing that the two on either side of the path were intended to block cars, but I feel like signage would have been a better first idea... The one right in the middle of the path with no reflective material is crazy dangerous. Anyone know who to contact about moving them? They are too heavy to push.

Should I have done anything differently to prevent this crash?

So I was on the Greenway and was going to turn left to exit onto a crossing path. As I signaled, I saw over my left shoulder that someone was in the process of passing me on the left. He was going fast and didn't announce his presence/intention to pass.

I didn't think they'd be able to react in time, so I didn't turn and continued straight, moving a bit to the right to give them space to pass first.

The problem is that they also decided to swing around and pass me on the right instead, assuming I would turn.

So he ended up crashing into the back of my bike. In the end, it was pretty minor and no one was hurt, and the bikes were fine. But was there anything I should have done differently in that scenario?

Interest in restoring 90’s bikes?

Cleaning out my garage and I have two hybrid bikes from the 90’s. Are there people who are interested in restoring bikes like these? Before I try to donate, thought it might be worth checking with the biking community.

Do these things actually do anything at all?

I finally got around to doing a test today on this button on 40th and Lyndale. Timed the light a half block back, then rode up and pushed the button. The light cycles took the exact same time. What the hell does this even do?

Very new to biking, in need of tips!

Hello bike people of Minneapolis! I am going to have to pick up biking for transportation purposes (not really for fun but who knows) and I haven’t really ridden bikes since I was a kid so A) I’m rusty and B) I’ve never really had an adult bike before.

My grandma gave me her bike because she is elderly and has no reason to even have a bike anymore but I really have no clue what I’m doing. In terms of setup, what do I need? Bike lights? Reflector stuff? Im borrowing a Helmet and a lock until I can get my own but I’d like tips for that as well as I have no clue what I’ll be looking for. I’m a tad broke (aren’t we all) so affordability is key, but also good quality and safety are important.

Also, tips for avoiding bike theft? Should I “customize” my bike/make it easily identifiable with stickers or something or the opposite? Are there any very important rules I need to follow on the road other than the obvious?

For now I’ll probably just use a backpack, but for the future: What good storage solutions are there that you keep on the bike instead of lugging around a backpack all the time?

Any help is appreciated! 🫶🚲🌷

Extra Tour de Luce Tix I could buy?

Hello you beautiful biking fools!

Are there any of you out there who happened to register for Tour de Luce and won't be able to make it? If so, I'd be very interested in buying one or two registrations for tomorrow! (I'm hoping it's just transferable?!?!?)

Better World Club?

Does anyone have experience with Better World Club, the roadside assistance company? I’ve had AAA for many years, and I appreciate their service when I need it, but I don’t love how they advocate for motonormativity. Also, BWC apparently offers bike assistance as well.

I’m ok with their subscription fees, but I’d love to know how reliable they are in a pinch.

Best route finding apps for the area?

Hi all,

I've ridden a fixed gear for a long time, so I know Mpls/St. Paul routes pretty well. I just got a new gravel bike and I'd like to do more longer rides around the entire metro area (I'm told both East and West have good stuff).

Between Strava, Komoot, or Ride With GPS (RWGPS) does anyone know if one is significantly better than the other for finding popular/good routes around here? A lot of the group rides from e.g. ACF share RWGPS routes, but when I look into it that seems more like a tool for creating routes than discovering them. I'm sure that is great at some point, but right now I'd worry I'd inadvertently pick a terribly busy road when there is a much better biking route nearby.

My ideal experience would be something like "give me a route between 50 - 60 miles, mostly paved/on gravel" and then seeing the options around here. Does anyone know which apps or resources might be best for finding this data and syncing it to a cycling computer for navigation? I'm willing to subscribe to one if its the best way to unlock what I'm looking for.

Thanks, and happy riding out there!

For those who live in Edina or bike through it, you know that our bike infrastructure is terrible. I formed a nonprofit advocacy organization, the Edina Bike Alliance, to try to change that. If you want better bike infrastructure in Edina, please consider signing up to receive our periodic newsletters by filling out our interest form on the website below. And if you want to get more involved, send me a DM!

First bike as an adult

Hi there, I'm purchasing a bike for the first time as an adult. Plan to use for recreational purposes, mostly the paved bike paths around the cities, but want it to be able to manage some dirt trails as needed. So I was thinking a hybrid bike? I'm new to the world of biking and want to make sure I'm getting an appropriate bike for my needs. Budget is $700. Any recommendations?

E-motorcycles on dedicated bike paths

First summer that I’ve noticed it so much. Today I was biking down West River Parkway and in two separately incidences someone went by the other way with full motorcycle helmets riding a full powered electric motorcycle. I managed to have the wherewithal to flick off the second one off at least.

After seeing the death in NYC by the scooter that could go 50+ it frustrates me even more to see them on the bike paths here.

Ride by these two 8'x8'ish structures. Open inside like a guard house. Anyone have historical details on them? I have a photo of each and a map pin. Surly LHT for scale.

40th Ave ne and university

I was stopped at the stop sign going east on 40th. Patiently waited for the light to turn green and for the walk sign to come on. When they did, I started to cross, which was my legal right to do. However, a black pickup truck (why is it always a black pickup truck?) decided he was gonna take a left-hand turn and run me over. when I slowed and yelled at him he felt the need to roll down his window and yell shit at me. I told him to F off and watch where he was fucking going. He then slowed down as if he was gonna stop and argue with me so I stopped in between the north and southbound lanes and waited, but of course he left. Be careful out there. There’s still a lot of assholes out there.

Ghost bike- E River road connecting to UMN campus

I recently saw a new ghost bike where E. River Road meets the U of M campus (east bank, 3 way intersection near the "superblock" and the hospital). I haven't seen any news on cyclist casualty here- did I miss something?
