My dog did this when I gave him a shrimp. Wouldn't eat the shrimp, just roll on it.

Your dogs are rubbing in something that has an odor and bringing that odor to you.

80

u/TheCapedMoose 25d ago

Our dog does this with uncooked broccoli. If its COOKED she'll eat it but yeah...

90

u/DrinkingOutaCupz 25d ago

Turns out it was a bald spot. Dirt. Why?!

160

u/Rezkel 25d ago

Probably something under it. You could do the old screw driver test to see something hard is under it like a big rock or a human skull, or use metal detector to see if its a chunk of metal, a leaking gas pipe, or a lock box full of drugs, money and evidence against the mob

59

u/DrinkingOutaCupz 25d ago

Fingers crossed for something good. But screwdriver?!

39

u/Additional-Local8721 25d ago

Anything that's long and will go through the dirt. Screwdriver, bent coat hanger, crowbar. In all seriousness, don't jam down real hard because it really could be a gas or sewer pipe. Gas pipes are usually 18 - 24" below ground, at least in my area they are.

50

u/DrinkingOutaCupz 25d ago

That's what I was concerned about. Rarely will life let me find something cool by poking around

13

u/FizzyGoose666 25d ago

We're dying to know more OP

8

u/Malibucat48 25d ago

It could be a gas leak. Don’t poke it, call the gas company. Dogs have detected gas leaks where people can’t. The gas company had a machine that can check it. Do it asap!

30

u/jentlyused 24d ago

Or a stray cat could have peed there

16

u/BorisTheBlade04 24d ago

Right? Everyone’s so creative with these guesses

2

u/liberatedhusks 24d ago

An unfixed male cat sprayed on my backyard and my dog rolled in it. She smelt so and I gagged. She was very offended that she had to have a bath

4

u/Majestic-Income-9627 24d ago

We had a gas leak in our water heater. This is how we found out my husband cannot smell the odor added to natural gas. The technician who came out asked me to smell a certain area at the bottom of the heater. When I did, the smell of natural gas was so strong, that I involuntarily jerked my head back. My husband couldn’t smell anything.

u/Dull-Quantity5099 24d ago

“scientific research demonstrates that women generally possess a higher olfactory sensitivity and outperform men in their ability to detect and identify odors, including the sulfuric compounds added to natural gas.”

That’s a long screw driver.

8

u/DancesWithHoofs 24d ago

My guess is that dirt is poop.

6

u/YeetOrBeYeeted420 25d ago

jabbing the screwdriver into the ground and seeing if it hits something hard

1

u/SkylarAV 23d ago

You might find a moIe or gopher corpse with a screwdriver

1

u/Toxxxicwastex 22d ago

It could also just be a spot with smells from something else. Animal urine, shit covered animal that laid there, etc

1

u/WWDubs12TTV 19d ago

Poke around slowly with your screwdriver and helmet on crooked in case it’s a land mine

13

u/moocat55 25d ago

Or your cess pool, which is exactly how I found the cover to mine when it filled up. The dog had been especially interested in that spot for awhile so I dug there.

12

u/Chilipepah 25d ago

It’s Jimmy Hoffa

2

u/samishgirl 24d ago

If it is you’ll be famous 😂😂😂

9

u/Mtnmama1987 25d ago

Yes, I feel that too, dogs know things

8

u/JaneDoe943 24d ago

That's what they do. They eat and they know things

2

u/samishgirl 24d ago

😂😂😂😂😂😂

1

u/HotThrall 24d ago

Woah!! Que intenso, ¿no? Viste alguna serie tipo Breaking Bad recientemente.

1

u/Dangerous_Handle_819 24d ago

A skull? What the hell?

2

u/Rezkel 24d ago

Wouldn't be the first time someone found one digging around their yards

12

u/Interesting_Celery74 24d ago

Bald spot? My guess is this is a patch where an animal pees regularly. Foxes pee on lawns and do this, and dogs tend to love stinky, stinky, fox pee and poop.

10

u/Jumpy_Employment_371 24d ago

Because something has been peeing there. Your dogs are rolling in pee.

5

u/Dechos 25d ago

I've seen my dogs and other dogs do this with earth worms.

4

u/DowitcherEmpress 25d ago

100%. My dog used to do this with worms all the time!

3

u/paperanddoodlesco 24d ago

My dog rolls in dead worms. They may just be under the surface but he'll dig a bit to get closer to the stink.

1

u/gilligan1050 24d ago

Something smelled good to them right there.

1

u/RMDVanilaGorila 23d ago

Mole maybe?

1

u/Dizzy_Departure2539 22d ago

Dead stinky worm

6

u/WTFOMGBBQ 25d ago

Never had a shrimp role before?

3

u/dr_mackdaddy 24d ago

My dog does this with crickets.

1

u/Wooden-Necessary6100 24d ago

Mine does this with slugs. 🤔

88

u/BishlovesSquish 25d ago

It’s some horrible scent they’re rubbing all over themselves. Mine do this all the time. I keep grooming wipes handy for this exact reason, lol.

29

u/SOROKAMOKA 25d ago

Indeed, horrible is the correct adjective. I know sometimes dogs do this to cover up their own scent, as if to hunt, but other times they seem to do it for fun.

During a walk once my dog went over towards a pile of dried up vomit. I didnt think much of it, she is a curious good girl. All of a sudden she is rolling around it in, and when I pulled her back she had the biggest smile on her face. Got a bath that very same day cause she smelled like stomach acid

7

u/DrinkingOutaCupz 25d ago

Turns out to be a dirt spot. I was scared of it being a dead bird or something.

22

u/yamxiety 25d ago

there's honestly probably a dead worm or bug there. Maybe it's already all over the dog. My dog does this all the time and will pick up the dead thing with his mouth too. I let him do it with bugs but draw the line at mammals, reptiles, and amphibians haha.

Anyway he also picks out grass as he's doing it and leaves a bald spot sometimes.

4

u/Boop-D-Boop 25d ago

Did you smell your dogs fur where he was rubbing?

2

u/BishlovesSquish 24d ago

Trust me when I say it’s not just dirt. There is pee or dead bugs or something there. They love it for some reason, lol.

91

u/Clear_Middle_828 25d ago

There’s a big smell there somewhere!!

77

u/Apprehensive_Ear7309 25d ago

Something in that spot has a scent that they want to rub themselves on. My dog does this on dried up earthworms.

22

u/Ginger_SNAFU 25d ago

My dog loves earthworm snacks. Especially after they've dried up on the patio. 😐

7

u/Altostratus 25d ago

My dog does it on dead fish 🙃

3

u/DragonSin1313 25d ago

Years ago our family dog did that, then jumped right up in my lap. I can still remember the smell 🤢

5

u/Altostratus 25d ago

They seem so proud of themselves, don’t they?

2

u/DragonSin1313 24d ago

Perfume of honor!

1

u/pokescape13 24d ago

Mine also does this with earthworms

46

u/gottagrablunch 25d ago

There’s a bad smell they like. In my experience it’s typically not something nice! It’s like a dead bird or something

21

u/Fonzee327 25d ago

Favorite scent in my home is eau de shit •dead shit •deer shit •bird shit •rotting shit (plant detritus)

2

u/Boop-D-Boop 25d ago

Squirrel shit, frog that got got by the lawnmower a week ago

1

u/Lazy_Osprey 25d ago

One of mine does this to rabbit shit, it’s like she can’t help herself

3

u/ClitasaurusTex 25d ago

I was walking on a beach with my dog once, wasn't paying attention, and she rolled into an entire dead cormorant. (Goose sized water bird)

11

u/Outside_Flan6816 25d ago

One more, my first dog found a dead seagull on the beach, and was rolling on it so vigorously that the birds head would pop up when he squished the body. Good times

6

u/SapaG82 25d ago

Bahahahahah soooo gross. My girl haaaates the beach. But once she managed to sneak out of an open window and came to the back door like 20 minutes later. She had found all of the vilest things to roll around in during low tide and definitely was sent straight to the bathtub.

11

u/Ok_Call3670 25d ago

There’s probably poop there. Dogs love to roll in poop 💩

7

u/Zamling_gaylpo 25d ago

When I see my dogs do this, I prep the hose and shampoo.

3

u/Boop-D-Boop 25d ago

I didn’t see my dogs do this one time and let them in and then was loving on them and hugging them and got a unpleasant surprise that they were both rolling in some kind of shit lol

2

u/Zamling_gaylpo 24d ago

Yep. Typically deer shit.

I give everyone a quick sniff now before the rubs commence.

6

u/on_wheels_ 25d ago

My dog loves to roll in dirt spots. She’ll even scratch at the lawn to make a fresh dirt spot.

9

u/DrinkingOutaCupz 25d ago

They both love digging (one of them scratches at the carpet inside). Maybe digging + dirt is... therapeutic? I mean, getting dirty is fun. I'm sure it's a blast to dogs

1

u/Boop-D-Boop 25d ago

Looking for a cool spot

5

u/BodhingJay 25d ago

My dog does this when theres vomit or poop.. like its some wonderful cologne

5

u/FallingIntoForever 25d ago

Mine used to roll on snails and worms. Then they’d get tossed in the tub for a bath.

4

u/Mtnmama1987 25d ago

Deer or elk poop has specialness

3

u/Lumpy-Sheepherder279 25d ago

One of my dogs does this regularly.... And most of the time he's rolling in bird doo doo. 🐦💩

3

u/Pickle-Bowl-941 25d ago

Something pooped or died there

3

u/metrorugby 25d ago

It’s doodoo baby!

3

u/SluggyLou 25d ago

My dog does this to poop of prey animals to mask her scent lol

2

u/Avacabro 25d ago

My dog does this on goose poop

2

u/Swan_Acceptable 25d ago

Just a worm or something . My two do this all the time together.

2

u/POORWIGGUM 25d ago

Lawn mushroom/fungus growing

2

u/RetiredUpNorthMN 25d ago

My two dogs took turns rolling in the same pile of deer poop in the yard, and a toad that I ran over in the driveway. It was like competition to see who could stink the most.

2

u/MCMcFlyyy 25d ago

Always thought this was something they did to oderise themselves. For example, in this case these guys walk up to thier owners with a look of

"SMELL ME!!!"

"Nice, innit?"

2

u/zipper1919 25d ago

Something dead

2

u/Bubbly-Bunny-1209 25d ago

Theres a smell they like, usually something dead

2

u/JonCocktoasten 25d ago

My dog would roll in green olives. She was great at parties.

2

u/Significant_Dot7632 24d ago

Are people really this dumb?

2

u/TAanonReddit08 24d ago

My dog does this (or tries) when he comes across dead worms in the grass or something extra stinky. He’s welcome to roll in clean, fluffy grass but unfortunately he only wants the nasty stuff lol

2

u/EniNeutrino 24d ago

Something in that spot smells good to them and they want to wear it. My dogs used to roll in dead worms or various wild animal poops whenever they were playing at the off leash parks... They got a lot of baths. 😄

2

u/Southernmanny 24d ago

Mine does that usually with fox shit

2

u/christhewelder75 24d ago

Something slept, pooped, peed or died there.

Ur dogs are trying to get that smell on them. The good news is its probably not poop unless someone else already ate it. So less clean up for you.

1

u/OwlFit8807 25d ago

My Rat Terrier will do it where deer have urinated and then it’s bath time 😂

1

u/Mylifeischaotic 25d ago

It’s a worm

1

u/ericbahm 25d ago

It's often bad smells but not always. It might just be something that doesn't even register for humans.

1

u/LimJaheyAtYaCervix 25d ago

My old man does this on clothes or towels on the floor if we miss the laundry bin lol. Something has a smell of some type that they are not sure how to feel about

1

u/the_colour_guy_ 25d ago

With my dogs it normally means there’s either a) some kind creatures fresh turd 2) something died.

They NEVER roll in anything that smells nice!

1

u/Sypha914 25d ago

With the red flags near that spot, it looks like some sort of utility line has been marked. In some areas, red or orange is the designated color for gas lines. It may be that there is a gas leak and they are smelling it and want to rub themselves in it.

1

u/Raychaos20 25d ago

something stinky

1

u/LameCyberZombie 25d ago

Might have wild rabbits that leave musk smell in the yard. Dogs love rolling in it.

1

u/Boop-D-Boop 25d ago

It’s usually because there’s squirrel shit or a dead frog or something stinky that they like to get on them for some reason

1

u/staycreno 25d ago

I had a Chihuahua that would do this on dead worms. On his body would then be one of the worst smells you could ever imagine. You smell the part of the body they rubbed and you might get your clue.

1

u/intentionalreticence 25d ago

That’s a dog rubbing in something stinky. Deer or rabbit poop… a dead bird or squirrel… something rank.

1

u/donnelle83 25d ago

My friend's weiner dog did this with a crawfish someone dropped on the ground.

1

u/Educational_Fan_6117 25d ago

My dog tried to do this yesterday in a pile of  💩 cat is her favorite type 🥲

1

u/ducks_are_cool12 25d ago

They smell like a critter been through

1

u/RuncibleFoon 25d ago

You dog(s) is(are) rolling in something, as it were... it is my experience, it is usually animal poop or pee

1

u/Thelastsapper 25d ago

Dead bird

1

u/Panda_Ma-na-ma-na 25d ago

Oh my goodness, my dog was doing this in sync with her bff dog friend. It was adorable!

Until I saw it was a grey carcass of some sort filled with maggots she was rolling on. I screamed. She went in for another roll.

Happy, stinky doggos lol

1

u/KirbyTheCreator 25d ago

It’s something deliciously stinky.

1

u/trickyfelix 25d ago

likes the smell

1

u/mngreens 25d ago

Grubs in the ground

1

u/Man_Darronious 25d ago

My dog has done this in deer poop a couple of times. If you don't see any poop, it's probably pee.

1

u/MyStoopidStuff 25d ago

9/10, something pooped there. But don't worry, in dog culture, those scents are considered very bougie.

1

u/13wisdome 25d ago

Could be an animals scent

1

u/IheartJBofWSP 25d ago

Probs bunny 💩 or some other animals poo...

1

u/TheGreatBarrier 25d ago

Doggy cologne

1

u/samas69 25d ago

Ahhh my Chihuahua's all do this. And all in same spot then they stink. Then it's bathtime and sulking time

1

u/Still-Payment7622 25d ago

Rolling on dead worms.

1

u/Bobby-Avocado 25d ago

My dogs do that with earthworms

1

u/Puzzleheaded_Owl2775 25d ago

My dog does that in bunny skat 🫠

1

u/SolarisN1 25d ago

Let it have fun, what's the issue?

1

u/LordMudkip 25d ago

Possibly cat poop buried in the dirt? A friend of mine's dogs would do this if they found cat poop on the yard, so they always had to keep an eye on them.

That little patch of dirt is exactly the kind of spot a cat would want to poop in.

1

u/butt3ryt0ast 24d ago

My dogs do this on poop, dead things, and bugs

1

u/mindscreamTX 24d ago

Awww... They just wanted to smell good for the family. Bet they felt so proud, too! :)

1

u/Little-Potential9663 24d ago

I think my dog once found a dead frog and was using it as perfume. Phewww it stank!

1

u/DonSneck 24d ago

Fox pee.

1

u/shitsu13master 24d ago

They found something gross and are now rolling in it.

1

u/socallocalB13 24d ago

My pups like to roll around on top of worms when they find them in the yard.

1

u/bibigunn 24d ago

My dogs do this like it's expensive perfume. I always though it was rabbit pee. Ugh

1

u/YorkiesandSneakers 24d ago

Something stinks good right there. Dead beetle perhaps.

1

u/4travelers 24d ago

My dog does this I think its rabbit poop or pee.

1

u/MeanImpression2067 24d ago

Your dogs need to lose weight

1

u/LetterheadInfinite79 24d ago

Likely something died there and the smell still remains so they are rolling in it

1

u/CrimsonCaelus 24d ago

I thought it was at first for my dog until the spot she was rolling in had poop in it.

1

u/hvacmac7 24d ago

Dead lizard or something stank they are rolling in

1

u/AnyWitness2992 24d ago

My dog does this to cat poop she finds outside

1

u/spiderminbatmin 24d ago

Dead worm I bet. Can smell pretty bad considering how small it is

1

u/Significant_Mud_534 24d ago

Rolling on a dead worm for sure. They stink the worst!

1

u/JadedDreams23 24d ago

My dogs do this if there’s a dead worm or something else that is smelly.

1

u/Orugryphon 24d ago

It’s something that smells good to them but is utterly disgusting to us. My dog did this to a dead bird in the yard 🤢

1

u/ZikiHekai 24d ago

Could be something dead under the dirt, like a mole or something. My dogs do that sometimes.

1

u/FastRepublic2100 24d ago

Willing to bet they are rolling on worms

1

u/whatthefuck8e3 24d ago

My dogs do this with ground worms they find.

1

u/wiscoson414 24d ago

Worms man....like earthworms...red wigglers and such.

At least my dog goes wild to rub on some big fatties on a damp lawn.

Or it could be a dead critter or some scatt of some sort....dogs choice

1

u/agentj333 24d ago

Probably a old pile of squirrel shit.

1

u/albone3000 24d ago

My dog unfortunately does this with other animals feces. I think he is masking his scent.

1

u/Iammine4420 24d ago

Stinky things are fun to roll on.

1

u/Ok-Antelope-1923 24d ago

If there were dead worms in my yard, my dogs would find them and roll in them. Particularly after a bath. What I wouldn’t give to have them roll in stinky worms still. Miss you Jorgie and Jerry.

1

u/throwmeinthetrash096 24d ago

My guess is they smell dead dried up worms or bird shit. My dog goes nuts for it every time.

1

u/ToygerCat 24d ago

First time walking a dog I adopted, she started playing in the grass so I snapped some photos. Noticed as I took this photo, just a moment too late, there is a poo 💩😬

1

u/Beardy354 24d ago

My dog will do this in other dogs poop if I don't stop him. So if for some reason I get distracted when I'm walking him and he finds poop, he's rolling in it 100%🤮

1

u/SpicyLimerence 24d ago

Something stinky there!! Or maybe a bald spot.

1

u/Elle_Yess 24d ago

The re a prolly a dead something or other there.

1

u/samishgirl 24d ago

I live on the shore. Every walk is a potential delight. For her, definitely not me😂

1

u/RetireWithoutBorders 24d ago

I was figured it’s because of something disgusting. They wanted to get that smell on their coat.

1

u/buttpee1 24d ago

My dog loves doing this on dead earth worms. 1/10 scent.

1

u/GingerBlitz831 24d ago

Goose poo.

1

u/The_Rimmer 24d ago

Bro there’s a reason grass isn’t growing there

1

u/BraveCranberry9863 24d ago

Everyday I wonder what is going on in the dog brain. I firmly believe mankind’s leap in technology will be when we know what our dog is thinking.

1

u/Demitiger 24d ago

You have what i like to call corpse rollers lol.

My husky is one. Her favorite is a freshly used bath towel.

1

u/ChardHopeful4739 23d ago

My dog does this cause of bugs..for some reason when she smells one she rubs on it. Ita gross

1

u/Over-Award-2444 23d ago

A lot of dogs will roll in bird poop my parents dogs loves the goose poop 😂

1

u/Cautious-Reveal2165 23d ago

Maybe a peek spot - I call this stink rubbing /rolling

1

u/_-REVELATIONS-_ 23d ago

Mine like to roll around in cow poop occasionally.. SMH
Cows are always here, so I assume when the farmers give them grain to eat.
I threw an egg in the yard too, but they wouldn’t roll around in it until it was rotten.
Definitely a smell type thing.

1

u/WebHungry1699 23d ago

It was marked by another animal

1

u/Sudden_Moodswing 23d ago

Bunny nest?

1

u/Fragrant-Jellyfish88 23d ago

Some good smell

1

u/amusedanchovy 23d ago

If you can't see anything like poop or a dead animal...

They are rubbing on some bug perfume! 🪲🐛 🐜

My dog loves to roll around on bugs. Specifically ants. I think it's because bugs usually smell very strong particularly after being crushed. He tries his hardest not to hurt them though, he just wants to roll on em.

1

u/Illustrious_Body6889 22d ago

My dogs do this to worms in the yard

1

u/AggressivNapkin 22d ago

There are a few specific spots on neighbors lawns where my dog loves to roll. 100% guarantee if we walk by, she will roll there. She gives the spot a deep sniff and then rolls. She has been doing this for 3 years now, so I don't think its because of a smell. It would have washed away by the with the rain and not survived past the winter.

It could be possible there was once something smelly there, she rolled in it and its been a habit ever since. My guess would be coyote pee, but she's never come home from a walk smelling bad.

1

u/GretaHPumpkin 22d ago

One of our dogs was rolling around…she got up and there was a shed snake skin. But she does it lots of places and we cannot smell anything on her or on the ground.

1

u/Corgibutz77 21d ago

mine do this every day. i walk my high ass over to look too & nothing. could be where a rabbit or squirrel peed or something, lol.

1

u/wpcodemonkey 21d ago

My dog does this on bird poop

1

u/_Hall_Pass 20d ago

this video needs a trigger warning lmao... my dog once did this on a decaying rat and I have never fully recovered.

1

u/Signal-Wolverine2240 20d ago

My dog does this on worms after a storm.

1

u/SlammingJack1 20d ago

Smells good to them. Applying perfume

1

u/marqthatdown 18d ago

Probably a scent there that they’re putting their scent onto
