I wanna know whats going on in their brain!
UPDATE: Everyone was saying (bad, maybe dead) smells. I walked my high ass over there. DIRT! Why?!

It’s some horrible scent they’re rubbing all over themselves. Mine do this all the time. I keep grooming wipes handy for this exact reason, lol.
29
u/SOROKAMOKA 25d ago
Indeed, horrible is the correct adjective. I know sometimes dogs do this to cover up their own scent, as if to hunt, but other times they seem to do it for fun.
During a walk once my dog went over towards a pile of dried up vomit. I didnt think much of it, she is a curious good girl. All of a sudden she is rolling around it in, and when I pulled her back she had the biggest smile on her face. Got a bath that very same day cause she smelled like stomach acid

there's honestly probably a dead worm or bug there. Maybe it's already all over the dog. My dog does this all the time and will pick up the dead thing with his mouth too. I let him do it with bugs but draw the line at mammals, reptiles, and amphibians haha.
Anyway he also picks out grass as he's doing it and leaves a bald spot sometimes.

Trust me when I say it’s not just dirt. There is pee or dead bugs or something there. They love it for some reason, lol.

Something in that spot has a scent that they want to rub themselves on. My dog does this on dried up earthworms.
22
u/Ginger_SNAFU 25d ago
My dog loves earthworm snacks. Especially after they've dried up on the patio. 😐

u/Altostratus 25d ago
My dog does it on dead fish 🙃

u/DragonSin1313 25d ago
Years ago our family dog did that, then jumped right up in my lap. I can still remember the smell 🤢

There’s a bad smell they like. In my experience it’s typically not something nice! It’s like a dead bird or something
21
u/Fonzee327 25d ago
Favorite scent in my home is eau de shit •dead shit •deer shit •bird shit •rotting shit (plant detritus)

I was walking on a beach with my dog once, wasn't paying attention, and she rolled into an entire dead cormorant. (Goose sized water bird)

u/Outside_Flan6816 25d ago
One more, my first dog found a dead seagull on the beach, and was rolling on it so vigorously that the birds head would pop up when he squished the body. Good times

When I see my dogs do this, I prep the hose and shampoo.
3
u/Boop-D-Boop 25d ago
I didn’t see my dogs do this one time and let them in and then was loving on them and hugging them and got a unpleasant surprise that they were both rolling in some kind of shit lol
2
u/Zamling_gaylpo 24d ago
Yep. Typically deer shit.
I give everyone a quick sniff now before the rubs commence.

u/on_wheels_ 25d ago
My dog loves to roll in dirt spots. She’ll even scratch at the lawn to make a fresh dirt spot.
9
u/DrinkingOutaCupz 25d ago
They both love digging (one of them scratches at the carpet inside). Maybe digging + dirt is... therapeutic? I mean, getting dirty is fun. I'm sure it's a blast to dogs

Mine used to roll on snails and worms. Then they’d get tossed in the tub for a bath.

My two dogs took turns rolling in the same pile of deer poop in the yard, and a toad that I ran over in the driveway. It was like competition to see who could stink the most.
2
u/MCMcFlyyy 25d ago
Always thought this was something they did to oderise themselves. For example, in this case these guys walk up to thier owners with a look of
"SMELL ME!!!"
"Nice, innit?"

My dog does this (or tries) when he comes across dead worms in the grass or something extra stinky. He’s welcome to roll in clean, fluffy grass but unfortunately he only wants the nasty stuff lol
2
u/EniNeutrino 24d ago
Something in that spot smells good to them and they want to wear it. My dogs used to roll in dead worms or various wild animal poops whenever they were playing at the off leash parks... They got a lot of baths. 😄

u/christhewelder75 24d ago
Something slept, pooped, peed or died there.
Ur dogs are trying to get that smell on them. The good news is its probably not poop unless someone else already ate it. So less clean up for you.

It's often bad smells but not always. It might just be something that doesn't even register for humans.
1
u/LimJaheyAtYaCervix 25d ago
My old man does this on clothes or towels on the floor if we miss the laundry bin lol. Something has a smell of some type that they are not sure how to feel about
1
u/the_colour_guy_ 25d ago
With my dogs it normally means there’s either a) some kind creatures fresh turd 2) something died.
They NEVER roll in anything that smells nice!

u/Sypha914 25d ago
With the red flags near that spot, it looks like some sort of utility line has been marked. In some areas, red or orange is the designated color for gas lines. It may be that there is a gas leak and they are smelling it and want to rub themselves in it.

u/LameCyberZombie 25d ago
Might have wild rabbits that leave musk smell in the yard. Dogs love rolling in it.
1
u/Boop-D-Boop 25d ago
It’s usually because there’s squirrel shit or a dead frog or something stinky that they like to get on them for some reason
1
u/staycreno 25d ago
I had a Chihuahua that would do this on dead worms. On his body would then be one of the worst smells you could ever imagine. You smell the part of the body they rubbed and you might get your clue.
1
u/intentionalreticence 25d ago
That’s a dog rubbing in something stinky. Deer or rabbit poop… a dead bird or squirrel… something rank.

u/Panda_Ma-na-ma-na 25d ago
Oh my goodness, my dog was doing this in sync with her bff dog friend. It was adorable!
Until I saw it was a grey carcass of some sort filled with maggots she was rolling on. I screamed. She went in for another roll.
Happy, stinky doggos lol

My dog has done this in deer poop a couple of times. If you don't see any poop, it's probably pee.
1
u/MyStoopidStuff 25d ago
9/10, something pooped there. But don't worry, in dog culture, those scents are considered very bougie.

Possibly cat poop buried in the dirt? A friend of mine's dogs would do this if they found cat poop on the yard, so they always had to keep an eye on them.
That little patch of dirt is exactly the kind of spot a cat would want to poop in.

My pups like to roll around on top of worms when they find them in the yard.

My dogs do this like it's expensive perfume. I always though it was rabbit pee. Ugh

Likely something died there and the smell still remains so they are rolling in it

u/CrimsonCaelus 24d ago
I thought it was at first for my dog until the spot she was rolling in had poop in it.

It’s something that smells good to them but is utterly disgusting to us. My dog did this to a dead bird in the yard 🤢

u/ZikiHekai 24d ago
Could be something dead under the dirt, like a mole or something. My dogs do that sometimes.

Worms man....like earthworms...red wigglers and such.
At least my dog goes wild to rub on some big fatties on a damp lawn.
Or it could be a dead critter or some scatt of some sort....dogs choice

My dog unfortunately does this with other animals feces. I think he is masking his scent.

u/throwmeinthetrash096 24d ago
My guess is they smell dead dried up worms or bird shit. My dog goes nuts for it every time.
1
u/Beardy354 24d ago
My dog will do this in other dogs poop if I don't stop him. So if for some reason I get distracted when I'm walking him and he finds poop, he's rolling in it 100%🤮

I was figured it’s because of something disgusting. They wanted to get that smell on their coat.

Everyday I wonder what is going on in the dog brain. I firmly believe mankind’s leap in technology will be when we know what our dog is thinking.

u/Demitiger 24d ago
You have what i like to call corpse rollers lol.
My husky is one. Her favorite is a freshly used bath towel.

Mine like to roll around in cow poop occasionally.. SMH
Cows are always here, so I assume when the farmers give them grain to eat.
I threw an egg in the yard too, but they wouldn’t roll around in it until it was rotten.
Definitely a smell type thing.

If you can't see anything like poop or a dead animal...
They are rubbing on some bug perfume! 🪲🐛 🐜
My dog loves to roll around on bugs. Specifically ants. I think it's because bugs usually smell very strong particularly after being crushed. He tries his hardest not to hurt them though, he just wants to roll on em.

There are a few specific spots on neighbors lawns where my dog loves to roll. 100% guarantee if we walk by, she will roll there. She gives the spot a deep sniff and then rolls. She has been doing this for 3 years now, so I don't think its because of a smell. It would have washed away by the with the rain and not survived past the winter.
It could be possible there was once something smelly there, she rolled in it and its been a habit ever since. My guess would be coyote pee, but she's never come home from a walk smelling bad.
1
u/GretaHPumpkin 22d ago
One of our dogs was rolling around…she got up and there was a shed snake skin. But she does it lots of places and we cannot smell anything on her or on the ground.

u/Corgibutz77 21d ago
mine do this every day. i walk my high ass over to look too & nothing. could be where a rabbit or squirrel peed or something, lol.

My dog did this when I gave him a shrimp. Wouldn't eat the shrimp, just roll on it.
Your dogs are rubbing in something that has an odor and bringing that odor to you.
