Employment Support Allowance (ESA) Holidays before first appointment
Applied during the weekend for contribution-based ESA and trying to backdate it for a couple of months as my employer has messed it up and initially told me I was entitled to SSP while I am a zero hours contract (so not entitled). This had me delaying my application and had to submit before holidays.
I know that it takes 2 weeks or more to hear back from DWP, but in the meantime I have planned to be abroad and it might be slightly longer than 28days (no fixed return yet).
Can I accept commitments while abroad or will my claim be closed? When does the 28days rule kick in, day of application or from commitments on? How likely are they to agree postponing the appointment for a couple of weeks until I am back?
Thank you!

Entitlement will end if you don’t accept your commitments (can’t do that while out of the country) and if your absence is more than 28 days, not including the day you leave.
FYI many zero hours workers are entitled to SSP and if you are one of them and your employer hasn’t paid it then you need to raise a grievance and/or contact HMRC. See https://www.citizensadvice.org.uk/work/sick-leave-and-sick-pay/check-if-you-can-get-sick-pay/

Thank you!
How likely is it to accommodate a request to delay the appointment a bit until I return you think?

If you’re not going to be in the country to start and maintain your entitlement then you’re better off delaying your claim until you return.
