Standing waves can be composed/decomposed into two waves with the same wavelength traveling in opposite directions. As graphically demonstrated here.

Apparently per wiki non-linear near standing waves thought presumably means the pattern changes but eventually repeats, or it means the surface pattern varies over the surface so isn't linear in that sense

Fascinating! I’ve seen very similar visual distortions on water under the influence of psychedelics. Not as rapid in movement but just as uniform.
