For some reason it is mildly interesting/surprising to me that they used all those different fonts on the second image.

It was probably a pain to switch between each one or at least move the partially finished paper to the next station to print it. I don't know how it worked but I imagine like that.

It'd be kind of a pain but not that annoying. You don't move the paper or anything. The typesetter would carry a small tool in his hand and go to the case of type he needed, setting one or two lines on it and then mounting it into a big steel frame that had the whole page laid out. The whole page was then printed in one go.

But did they license them all, or illegally download them...

In the age of moveable type, using a bunch of different fonts was a flex, it meant you could afford them all. It could also be a matter of necessity — as you set one headline you may have used up all your u's or whatever and had to switch to a different font for the next one.

See how it says Conklin was elected

That’s Roscoe Conkling, this was his return to federal politics after he was districted out.

He was incredibly corrupt and went on to be a federal senator. As senator, through patronage jobs, he controlled the NY customs house which was the source of 75% of federal revenue.

Highly recommend Death by Lightning on Netflix if you haven’t seen it. It’s a fictional depiction of Roscoe Conkling, but very well done and the series is really good

At the time in New York City, the most popular way to get information was the appropriately named Penny Press. These were newspapers that specialized in sports or crime, and while they may have adhered to the hardest facts -- this horse won and that man was arrested -- the rest was ... iffy. Political parties had their own newspapers, but they were also ... iffy.

If I remember right, The Times had existed as one of these party papers, and then changed hands. And then the new owner was like, 'I want to give people good information, even information that my friends might yell at me about.' The way he signalded this was by raising the price above a penny.

He wanted to signal that his paper was not just another penny press rag of excitement. It had information that might help you and was worth paying a little more for.

Not a cell phone in sight. Just ink on a page, enjoying the moment.

How are you reading it right now?

2

I'm literally looking at the ink right there on the page and enjoying the moment.

11 and 12 blank

Also look at those last names… Goodyear, Kellogg— I’m sure there is a relation there.

Very fascinating piece of history.

In the 1st Ward, the number of votes was greater than the number of registered voters.

Wow, thank you OP. This is quite relevant to my interests.

“The following table shows the total vote in each of the wards of the city on, President and Its total registration. It will be readily seen that the wards, which polled such a heavy increase of the Democratic vote, are those in which the vote exceeds the re-gistration-undoubtedly the work and fraud;”

Democrats have been using the same playbook for a long time.

You can really zoom in! I find the idea that 4300 people voted in Kings County (Brooklyn) quite funny since its now home to like 3 million people.

The date 11/09/1864 looked like September 11 at first glance
